Default Ex-wife is holding my collection hostage. Please help.

I need some advice. Long story short, I used to have a safety deposit box with my wife. We got divorced and like a dumbass, I never cleared out the box. This was a combination of me being too trusting and lazy. Now, I have some stuff in there that she is basically holding and not allowing me access to. There is nothing I can do, since the divorce is finalized and she is the only one who has access to the box. Everything in there she wants a 50/50 split. So here is where I need everyone's help. Among the items, I have 2 Kevin Durant exquisite RPA/99, one is a BGS 8.5 1 color and the other is a BGS 9 3 color. I also have a Chris Bosh exquisite RPA/99 ungraded. I'm thinking about buying out here half on these 3 cards. And once I do that, sell them on my own. Whats a fair price that I can buy her out on these 3 cards? Your help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Well now... this will be a good thread.

OP, you're going to get a lot of different advice here. I would talk to a divorce attorney and make sure that whatever you do leaves you in the clear. The KD 9.5 is worth... ahem.... a lot.

Best of luck man.

I'm not trying to be facetious here, but does she have any idea how much they're worth? Or does she just know they're valuable enough to have in a box?

Either way, hope you get back everything that's yours.

Correction. That's a 9 3 color. Not 9.5. Sorry

She knows nothing about cards. But her brother knows enough (and I know he has her ears when it comes to stuff like this).

Man, my bet is that she probably knows about how much these go around for. If not, she probably googled it already. Good luck getting your cards back.

This is rough. I'm curious to hear how this ends. I hope to never be in such a situation.

Find some past sales and work something out. Your definitely going to have to have something to show her.

What's your ex-wifes phone number and location of the bank? I'll get it straighten out for you.

You said it contained 2 Adam Morrison Exquisite RPAs and a Greg Oden Ultimate RC? I got you brah.

The fact that the divorce is final puts her in a position of power. One of the last things you certify to the judge is that you are satisfied with the outcome and feel that it was fair.

Your only angle would be to appeal that she was withholding these cards from her property statement that she filed with the court, BUT the court may also argue back that it was your property and therefore should have been disclosed by you. I'm not a lawyer but she MAY have full rights to those cards now so if you can get 50% you should do it.

Throw it up on ebay bin best offer and have one of us hit the buy it now for 500 dollars. So if its used as reference... half would be 250.i dont think these sell everyday anymore but i might be wrong.

Just throwing ideas out. Unethical or not, it is what it is

Do you have a prenup?

If not then she owns 50 percent unless it’s clearly defined. However there could be a loophole depending on the reasoning for the divorce. Ie: drug related, substance abuse issues, etc.

She's actually a very honest person. She just wants whats fair. She could easily be a total bitch and say everything in there is mine. But shes not doing that. It just sucks, cause coming from my perspective I thought all of this was mine 100 percent. I offered he 10 grand for all 3, and she said no. I thought that was a fair number.

Did you acquire the cards before or during your marriage?

Not trying to beat you up but something is missing here. Why weren't these cards included in the divorce proceedings? Normally anything of value is itemized as part of the process. Did you really forget that you had 20 grand of cards somewhere?

Brutal. I’d work a deal with a member or a trusted friend with a cheap BIN on eBay and write her a check. Then don’t send the card but pay the “buyer” thru PP. Sorry about your situation.
On a lighter note this is definitely the thread of the year...by a long shot. Good luck!

So she owns the cards now? I'm assuming since you said only she has access to them. I would contact an attorney but it sounds like you already gave her the rights to the property in the divorce.

This was very simple. Only 1 attorney was involved (hers). No kids. House was divided 75% to 25% (her favor). Everything else we divided amicably. We did not get the attorney involved in anything else only for the necessary paper work. I collected these cards during our marriage, so It was best to keep cards between me and her (the attorney would've obviously asked for her to have half anyway at a minimum). Look everything is done at this point. Please no more questions about pre-nups and clever loop holes. The reason I started this thread is I want a few opinions on a dollar amount. I plan on showing her this thread, and maybe she will accept a number based on an unbiased educated opinion.
