Default Good scanner for graded cards

I have a quality scanner but it always focuses the image on the case. This is especially an issue for BGS cards where the surface of the card is set back from the edge of the case. Do you guys have recommendations for a good scanner that isn’t too bulky or expensive?

I second this. I personally don't know enough about current scanners to make a recommendation. Try an app called Office Lens by Microsoft. I use it all the time for cards. CamScanner is another good one.

you need an Epson V600 or equivalent. it MUST be a scanner that uses CCD (charge coupled device) because it can focus on a wider depth of field. basic all in one scanners use CIS (Contact Imaging Sensor) which cannot focus on depth and scans will appear blurry. Here are two examples. First image is with my all-in-one Canon CIS scanner, second is with a higher end CCD scanner. Third image is a "scan" taken with the Live Scan app on my phone. Note the big differences between the two types of scanners. notice that the CIS scanner cant focus on anything other than whats flat on the platen.

^^ If that was an advertisement for the CCD scanner, your phone app image still looks best.

the scanner app takes some fiddling with to crop just right. but I agree it does a great job.

Most of the lower end scanners today are "CIS" scanners. In order to scan the label of a BGS graded card, you will need a "CCD" scanner if you want a flatbed scanner instead of your phone camera. My 10 year old CCD scanner finally died recently, so I replaced it with the below scanner (but didn't want to pay an arm and a leg either). Does mostly what I want to do though the gold label comes out with some "shine" on it.

I have a Canon 8600F. Bought it for like $40 shipped on eBay a few years ago.

Here are scans (and shameless plugs of nice cards):

try running one with the lid up? will give you the black background which makes the cards stand out even more, imo.

and i run an epson 600 as well, software has preloaded crop formats.

which saves a ton of time.

downer, the selection just under this is just too small that it crops some of the flip off.

lid up effect

I usually scan in photoshop and use their auto contrast, autotone to get the glare and the blur out.

That is because your new CCD scanner is lit by LED.

I bought an Espon V370 for $100 to scan graded cards. Its pretty good except for the lines on BGS gold label. Those lines do not appear on PSA slabs.

I scanned these together with the card sleeves

Canon CanoScan 9000F Mark II. I paid $80 for it on eBay. Scans of PSA and BGS below. If you look into my flickr you can zoom in on the scans. Crystal clear.

The V600 is the scanner to get. It can be had for under $200 and will give you the highest quality scans.

Do you see any lines on the BGS gold label with V600?

It will put similar vertical "rainbow" lines on any refractors you scan. There was a thread about this in the bask forum - Epson V3XX scanners have an issue with vertical refractor lines and other "shine" lines like above, but apparently the V600 does not.

I purchased the Epson V700 in order to scan large format film slides for landscape photography. I wouldn't recommend spending the money on the Epson V700 (+$500), but it does produce some amazing scans with some incredible detail if you need it.

I also scan with the lid up to get more detail and contrast out of the PSA holder

Here's a recent example...

It's great with Refractor cards too...

I'm one of the weird ones that like the refractor lines. most scanners scan refractor cards "flat" and you can't even tell what the card looks like. I believe anything that is an led scanner will produce this effect. All cards below scanned with an Epson v370.
