Arrow ---The Official *2019* Topps Home Run Challenge Thread---

We have been talking about the 2019 HR Challenge in the "2018" thread. I thought it would be appropriate to start a new thread for the 2019 set.

If you would like print runs for 2018 or read the thread as it unfolded for the 2018 set into the 2019 set it can be found here:
https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1199779

Rules of Note:
__________________________________

* The prize for picking the correct date of a HR is a month specific parallel card.
--- Of note is that last year that 3 months had a gray/blackish color and 2 months had a pinkish color.
--- So the only noticeable difference in parallel for those months was the serial numbers and the listing of the month on the back.

* March and April are combined for one Month, there are 6 possible parallels (March/April, May, June, July, August, September)
* You have until 4am EST the day of the game to enter the code online
* Once a date is picked, Topps will not allow you to change this
* If the player does not play that day for any reason (cancelled game or because they sit out) the play is considered a loss.
* You only win one parallel card no matter how many home runs that player hits that day.

If you need to see the full rules for 2019 they can be found here:
https://www.topps.com/media/pdf/HRchallenge19FIN.pdf

In the 2018 thread there was a mention of there possibly being a short print created in the first 15 players. There is no confirmation of this in the rules, but it does give an overall print run for each series.

For the 2019 Topps Baseball Series I phase of the Homerun Challenge, 478,000 parallel cards are available to be won.
...
The quantity of parallel cards for 2019 Topps Baseball Series II is approximately 285,500.

What bothers me most...

Quote:
March and April will be grouped together as a single month, resulting in a total of six (6) unique parallel card sets. Accordingly, the specific type of parallel card prize of a corresponding Major League Baseball player will vary depending upon the month in which it has been won. I want confirmation they won't botch up the monthly colors before I spend any of my money on this again this year!

I definitely understand that. I know I may be falling for the same scam, but understand that this year I can only blame myself if they do it again.

I think the solid colored borders is the remedy. Because Topps has been doing distinct solid colored border parallels for years now.

Judging by what I'm seeing, and to go along with the comments about the sheer higher number of cards out there for each of the (now 35) players, I've gotta think that print runs are gonna be really big. So unless they've come up with a system to suppress print runs that they've not yet announced, I could see many print runs being over 100 at this point.

What are you guys thinking on this? So far, I'm glad my investment has been $5 for four cards.

I agree with the comments in the previous, "2018", thread that the lower numbers are printed in lower quantity. I have received 108 via lots without regards to the checklist of the lots, only 18 of them are from the first 15 players. So those players may end up with lower print runs for the first few months.
Also Lindor may possibly not start the season now.

Scam may not be the right word, more like sham. Either way I was referencing the fact that they used the same colors for 3 months and another color for 2 months. Having only one month with it's own parallel easily distinguishable from the rest.

I don't see Matt Davidson on the checklist? I hear he's a monster at this in spring training?

I just pulled up that thread this past week to see if there was any "resolution" to find that he was banned so there won't ever be one.

It’s a interesting question with a lot of possibility. The print runs/month will be higher per player due to the main fact you brought up that there’s only 35 players this year compared to last year. That makes it more condensed. But will there actually be that many more code cards out there? The odds of obtaining these cards are still the same. 1/hobby box, just like 2018. Do we think Topps will sell as many boxes as last year? Also remember that as of now, these code cards will not be in Allen&Ginter this year. Last year that set added a bunch of codes into the mix at the end of the year. We could be seeing a different trend than last year. Who knows!

I think you're missing your own math. Because it's more condensed that means that there are more cards of each of the 35 players and those players will be played more frequently by those playing the game.

I have no idea on this, but I think the frequency of them in retail products is higher this year...? But really, just look on sportlots. Already for 2019 Topps there are EIGHTEEN players with double digit cards in stock - many near 20 cards. It was extremely rare that anyone would have double digits in 2018 and still to this day there is only one player with just ten. There appears to me to be way more production in 2019 from what I can observe.

I swear I'm not trying to be a jerkwad about this. I just don't want anyone to get ripped off like some of us did last season. Are the full official rules out yet? Maybe there is something in there for rarities. Nope, I just looked. This game won't be worth playing... it just cannot be.

The answer to print runs was provided to us in the rules:

2018 Rules indicating print runs:
Quote:
In each of the three (3) participating brands of Topps trading cards, fifty (50) different Major League Baseball players will be identified on HRICs. For the 2018 Topps Baseball Series I phase of the Homerun Challenge, 178,414 parallel cards are available to be won.
...
The quantity of parallel cards for 2018 Topps Baseball Series II is
approximately 106,537; the quantity of parallel cards for 2018 Allen & Ginter Baseball is approximately 66,537.
2019 Rules indicating print runs:
Quote:
For the 2019 Topps Baseball Series I phase of the Homerun Challenge, 478,000 parallel cards are available to be won.
...
The quantity of parallel cards for 2019 Topps Baseball Series II is approximately 285,500.

So I'd like to hear your opinion on this and your guess as to what this will mean - especially in terms of print runs of winner cards. Just your best educated guess.

haha, My best educated guesses last year meant squat. I am all over the place. So here are my two thoughts on both sides.

Lower Winning Print Runs: The 2018 winning cards sell for so little that people may not want to invest in the game cards thinking they can just buy the winner cards online afterwards. Of course that way of thinking can lead to the fallacy that the cards will be available online when there is no guarantee of that. Right now people don't seem to be competing for the contest cards online and can be had for around $1-$3 on ebay and groups. Last year I had to settle to pay around $3-$5 for some of the same players.

Higher Winning Print Runs: Because August and September were so high last year it does show an increase players. If those same people enjoyed it they could play the cards this year. Also if breakers feel they will be left with the cards after the contest like they were last year they could be more apt to play them this year. Also there are a lot of people that joined late last year and don't know some of the disappointment that early players like you and I felt after they duplicated colors. So they may be more willing to jump in from the beginning. Then there are people like myself that are either "suckers" or "optimistic" that were upset about last year and still willing to give it a shot this year because it was fun.

Default ---The Official *2019* Topps Home Run Challenge Thread---

I'm putting on my mad scientist hat and going down the rabbit hole. ..

I've been spending a lot of time looking at the 4-5 digit production codes to the right of the scratch off zone. Its apparent to me that these digits represent a print # for that particular player. I've recorded my stack of about 600 cards as well the nearly 2000 current listing on Ebay hoping to find some trends regarding these numbers. What I've found i'll list below:

I've mentioned before the probability of short prints for players HRC 1-15. It seems to go further than this. Below is based on what I could find through my cards and ebay photos.
  • Cards 1-10 have a print run up to 5000
  • Cards 11-15 have a print run up to 9000
  • Cards 16-25 have a print run up to 14,000
  • Cards 26-35 have a print run up to 23,000

I could not find ANY cards with these production numbers higher than these stated above. But this is not a completely accurate list, my sample size is to small. Add these print runs up and we are sitting at 465,000 code cards for Series 1. CLOSE but not 100% accurate according to Topps.

Quote:
For the 2019 Topps Baseball Series I phase of the Homerun Challenge, 478,000 parallel cards are available to be won.
If I had to take a guess, there are probably a bit more than 23,000 for HRC 26-35 cards, but I don't have any proof for that. In any case I think its a fairly accurate representation of the print runs for the code cards for each player.

Thinking back to last year, it seems our 2019 HRC #1-10 cards could be a bit under-printed. You can see a 2018 Mike Trout clearly had a higher print run in 2018.

With the numbers shown above, I would like to think we'll see similar results to 2018 for players 1-15. Its pretty safe to say that there's going to be an EXCESS of cards/winners for players #16-35, even more so cards #26-35
