Default The Shohei Ohtani Personal Collection - 2018 Non-Auto Version

Here's the core of my Shohei Ohtani Non-Auto PC. * I updated to include Autos*

6.12.21 Update - With Ohtani taking off and realizing his potential, I have taken the opportunity to lower cost basis on my collection. I have updated my collection after ~250 slabs sold. I still love collecting Ohtani, but it's even more fun when your collection is essentially zero cost (free is fun too).

Few things I tried to accomplish when I began the journey:

1. Buy cards you like - Not going to force myself to buy 1/1s and obscure parallels. I'd rather have a large quantity of cards that I aesthetically love to flip through. Having a lot of something I like makes me happy.

2. Buy the card, not the grade, but get the grade - I bought 95% of these raw. I had to buy early upon set release to increase the rate of "gem mint quality" raw cards. I have a very large stack of raw cards that didn't make the cut to gem. Sold some, keeping some. Not everything is 100%, but that's part of the fun.

3. This is a once in a lifetime PC - I'm an American born in California, but I'm 4th generation Japanese. I was too young to super collect Ichiro in 2001 and I've been waiting years for Ohtani to come stateside. As much money as I've spent on this, it's more than just an "investment" of buying a ton of bowman chrome color autos. Who knows what Ohtani does in 5-10 years, but I will probably never do this again for any player - it was a love of labor.

\

Lastly, I sadly sold my Topps Chrome Sapphire Superfractor in 2019 pre-season (of all cards, I know). There is however a silver lining. I covered the cost of the card, bought a card (that also rocketed in value) and made a nice profit. Here's the card, Ohtani's uncle:

Thanks guys, appreciate it.

I'd love to think I have an "eagle eye" but I've had plenty of misses. Picture below is a combo of cards that didn't make the cut to submit and base cards I'm hoarding from group breakers dumping at ridiculous prices. Plenty other stuff scattered. My wife hates me.

Looks good. Amusing that the best card is all the way on the bottom of the uploads.

Very cool collection! I PSA'd one of each Ohtani Topps base/sp card from 2018 as well. Love what he represents for the game. Here's my collection: https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1263318

Also, looks like you and I own 2 of the 3 2019 PSA 10 Throwbacks

Yeah man, given the absurd volume of sets Topps releases, something had to be pared. Stadium club missed the cut due to recovery/resell value (one of the many factors in choosing), but I do like the photography for sure. Nice card!

Yeah, looks like it. Hopefully it'll be worth some nice coin one day so I can brag to my wife about it, only for her to tell me to sell it (and me saying no).

I have a lot of base standing by and already parsed by "gradable" copies. If he blows up and it becomes financially sensible, I'll have a 300 card submission

Very nice collection btw - collect what you love!

Yeah, I initially intended to just PSA one of each copy. I've grabbed more base and other SPs this year as I really enjoy him. Maybe someday I'll sub, but otherwise my wife will just continue asking me why? Haha!

Very nice collection! I am neither Japanese, nor an Angels fan, but Ohtani is an amazing athlete. My son, and I collect mostly Royals players, but he does have a pretty impressive bunch of Ohtani cards. How could anyone not want to collect this guy? Thank you for sharing. Your appreciation for the young man is evident.

Thanks for the kind words. Hopefully he's around to continue to perform for years to come. Good for baseball

I bought one Heritage variation #17 raw too and then got it graded a 10. It was my plan to get more until he hurt his elbow and the value plummeted. At least it kept me from buying more Heritage boxes trying to get one. I hope it's seen as the definitive first rookie

And pulled this from a pack of Stadium Club last year. Nearly passed out:

Incredible stuff.

Let me know if you have any interest in a Heritage Nickname Variation ("SHO TIME"). I'd be glad to make you a very good deal on one.

When Ohtani prices dropped, that's actually when I went nuts - these things were ~500 for a while and I blindly started buying every decent copy when people started dumping. Good timing on his #17 RC. I just got back a bunch from a sub today - updated the picture. Love that card.

I do earnestly believe that's going to be the main-stream RC to have. If you're going to own one of his RCs, that's the one.

Nice! I wish I had more time to financially recoup between sets. There are definitely some really cool parallels that I had to pass on =(

Of course I'm interested. I have no self control
