Default Kobe long term

I disagree with people profiting off this. But does this set new standards on prices of rookie cards? I see most are selling for 20-50 times there value two days ago . Base Topps $700 hoops $300 upper deck $250 metal $400 fleet $200 graded topps bags 9.5 $3000 psa 10 $5000 . Where do these settle long run ? The topps example was $50-$60 6 months ago $250 a week ago now $5000 what’s true value on a psa 10 ? I’ve collected Kobe since he was a rookie and this sickens me . But I have a lot of friends that now want to go on eBay or to a shop to buy a piece of history . What do I tell them ? Are these real prices ? Does it come back down to earth ? If so where ?

I don't want to get into specific prices. All I will say is that one of the greatest players players on one of the greatest franchises just died at a young age. His legend will only grow from here on out. I don't see his prices going down ever. They will be plenty more expensive as time goes on.

I get that and agree but we’re talking from a sports card point of view masses produced cards now holding values that are just unwordly. Everyone knows I’m a huge sports collector so there asking my advice and for first time in forever I donno what to tell them . My gut and history tells me that prices have to drop and to wait a few months to buy . But this is an event I’ve not encountered in my life so maybe I’m wrong just wanted multiple view points

I would think these super high prices are very short term. Long term I agree that his tragic early death will add to his legend, but the rookies wont see too much of a bump from where they would have ended up in 5 years IMO. Autographs that a week ago were $125-$150 are selling for 1k+ right now. I dont think thats sustainable with the amount of his autos out there. Maybe 250/300 for the low end autos after the reaction to this news settles down.

Kobe rookie cards are about to up big 100X value. I had the chance to get a PSA 10 rookie Topps Chrome Kobe for 3000 after the ebay user countered my 2800 offer. Me being an idiot declined. There is now one in bidding that is about to end around $8000. Again this isn't even the refractor version.

Wilt is actually what I Thought but he had 1-3 rookies and topps was not mass produced . Kobe has what 20 rookies and all mass produced so I’m supposed to believe a 1996 topps base psa 10 is now a $5000 card ?

Anyone paying these prices has no clue about the card market, especially for these cheap rookies. I feel bad for anyone who is buying a collector's choice ro0kie for $50.

I should preface: Kobe's pre-panini era stuff.

Outside of a select few modern Kobes, Panini is probably still sitting on a crapload of his stickers which will be released each year. He was their spokesman, afterall.

His upper deck auto's will continue to climb significantly. I think his panini auto's will still go up, but I can't see them sustaining at these prices.

I don't see them sitting on a boatload of stickers when he has had redemptions. He also was never a cheap signer they could stockpile -- that's one reason why doing the spokesman deal was a plus. It helps ... but still expensive.

Good point. Probably will release the remaining stickers they have sporadically in higher end releases now.

I think that was already practice in general -- I have not really analyzed his auto volumes in recent releases but they seemed to have higher numbers earlier in deal.

I think they cut back around the time he retired.

Would be surprised to still see him show up in stuff like Prizm in the future.

Most everything except autographs will come down and hard. I remember when Dale Earnhardt died during a race on TV and his cards and die cast went way up only to later be found cheaper that what they were prior to death.

Prices will come back to earth. But won't ever come back to what they were yesterday. The guy wasn't some middle of the pack athlete. He was a legend for one of the two greatest franchises in sports.

As I'm sure was the case for many of you, I had hoped to pick up some more Kobes before the HOF induction. Glad I got one. Will have to wait to add more. While I don't mind overpaying, I don't want to help anybody profit from his death.

Dale is not good example, ALL RACING/Diecast Took a Huge Nose dive in last 10 years! Kobe is a Generational talent in the most popular sport in the world, died at young age and was UnderValued to start with IMO, RCs won’t stay at this level, but increase in Autos and Rookies will stay put I believe! RIP Mamba

I have no idea

But I do know Kobe was criminally undervalued 24 hours ago regardless

So what that means? No idea

Prices will float downward over time, but they are not going to touch their pre January 26 levels.

Everything will go back down but not to same level. Autos will go up the most % wise. No reason for other stuff to skyrocket the way it is.

It's unfortunate that there are so many people buying up Kobe cards that have no clue.

Lots of fake scoreboard auto's, ovation auto's getting scooped up for very high prices.

Is this going to be like Clemente where all his cards are very expensive or no because there was so many more cards you think?

He has a ton of product out there. Prices will come back down. They won't be as low as before his death but they won't also be near as high as right now after he just died. Give it 6 months to a year and prices will be way down from right now.
