Exclamation Dennis Pevarnick: Ebay bbcinv, South Lake Tahoe, CA is a confirmed CARD DOCTOR

Dennis Wayne Pevarnick
Residence: South Lake Tahoe, CA
Dealer name: Baseball Card Investments
Ebay ID: bbcinv
Masked VCP ID: v***i

69 year old Dennis Pevarnick has been buying and selling cards for decades and is a high volume submitter of cards to PSA. His "store" at card shows is named Baseball Card Investments or bbcinv. He is/was on the list of PSA Dealers. A great majority of his sales of graded cards is offline through card shows. In researching his purchases and sales, there are plenty of "after" photos with very few "before" matching photos and there are many "before" photos with few matching "after" photos. Pevarnick has been careful to not leave an online paper trail but every now and then he slipped up which allowed me to find a few cards that he purchased, altered, had graded (always by PSA) and then sold through his Ebay store bbcinv or consigned through an auction house. When painstakingly searching through his Ebay feedback received as a buyer, there are seemingly more purchases made of raw cards with some being lots and even one verified complete set of raw 1948 Bowman Football. The same situation occurs in that I can find the "before" purchase but no "after" sale. When wading through his large volume PSA cert runs, many of the graded cards are in Set Registry collections without a traceable online transaction associated with it.

As with fellow card alterers Charlie Barokas and Craig Roehrig, there are not going to be many cards to post in here due to the limited ability to conduct investigative searches. This is mostly due to Ebay making the decision to mask buying IDs. The time involved just to uncover a handful of proven altered cards is astounding.

It is difficult to track Pevarnick's online activity. He is a high volume PSA card submitter and specializes in 1948 Bowman Football and Baseball, 1933 Goudey and 1935 Diamond Stars. Any card that he has ever sold that was submitted to PSA by him is now in question as to whether or not it is altered. We're talking thousands of cards.

Looks like Dennis has been making enough money from his card doctoring enterprises to do some gambling on the side:

https://www.wsop.com/players/profile/?playerid=138815

That's at least 3 or 4 card doctors now who are also professional gamblers.

Yep, the photo is from a poker tournament - the only image I could find.

BTW, he was at the Philly Card Show this weekend.
I've heard that he regularly hits the show circuit and that's where he does most of his business.

That's correct. I've been seeing him at all the major shows for at least 25 years. I've always avoided buying from him because of his close association with others who I knew to be card doctors. Maybe unfair but now my suspicions have been confirmed. Good work, Corndog.

Certainly a name familiar to those of us who've been vintage collectors for a while. I remember Dennis all the way back to Boston shows in the 90s. You have to wonder sometimes if all or nearly all these guys are bad.

Statement from Dennis Pevarnick found online:

Quote:
I have been buying and selling sportscards since 1989. I am one of the original PSA authorized dealers since their inception and in addition to being a buyer/seller on EBAY (listed as BBCINV) I have purchased and sold cards at most of the large shows in the country during the last nineteen years.

A couple of comments on the altered cards that were outed:

The 1948 Pollard has a rounded UL corner. How did that card, even after trimming, get a PSA 8?

The 1948 Bowman McHugh and Iversen, both PSA 8s, appear to have a few printing flaws on the front of each card that were touched up/recolored, even when adjusting for image quality.

I don't think Pevarnick submits enough cards to PSA to get the special "favored submitter" treatment that we have come to know all too well. Could some of his submissions have been through PWCC or others? Did he and some other card doctors pool their cards before sending them to PSA for grading?

Not surprising. Think of every card dealer you've ever met - it's the same shady dude every time.

Hmmm

Could they be turning to trimming to fund their gambling addictions?

Thanks for all your tireless work uncovering this fraud corndog! Amazing work!

Again and again we see PSA supporting this type of fraud with a numerical grade on the subject label. Any comments from Joe Orlando and Steve Sloan?

On Net54 that is all that matters. Maybe Leon can get him to do one of those nifty banner ads.

Joe and steve really care deeply about the anxieties of people who have built their collections around psa cards. So much so that if you ask a question on their forum they ban you.
