Default NBA Top Shot - High Risk, High Reward?

I joined the beta of this online digital basketball card platform a few weeks back and I thought I'd share my thoughts on it so far.

Basically the platform has digital clips(moments) which are serial numbered out of a certain amount. Those moments are distributed through packs and seldomly challenges. I can post the moment on the marketplace and sell it if I want or trade it with others.

A moment I own looks like this: https://www.nbatopshot.com/moment/li...f-556c4dff76dc

I made a little comparison between these NBA Top Shot moments and our cards:

Pros
- The moments are more interactive, I can share them and enjoy them a bit more than my other cards
- No shipping, no duties, no customs, no wait times
- Transparent ownership(you know a username of who owns Lebron James base 23/1000 for example)

Cons
- The packs are pricey, for example a $29 pack contains 1 rare and 7 commons
- There can never be any real autos or game jersey cards
- The market isn't established yet as there are only a few hundred users

My verdict is still out on this, I really enjoy my cards, but it might be worth a try since it is still in beta.

I dont understand. Why would I spend money to get a gif when I can literally pull the content for free?

Well, a similar argument could be made that someone could print off a photo at home.

I don't get it either. I mean, I get it, but I don't get that it's worth money. Haha. Same could be said about blockchain cards that don't have a physical companion. You own a picture? The same picture I could go save on my computer? Hard for me to wrap my mind around, but....people pay money for stuff all the time that I never would. To each his own!

I think it's brilliant.
Imagine the possibilities down the road: a 1/1 personalized message from the actual player, or more than one player. More player-interactive possibilities, such as the player doing color commentary on the clip. Would people value an autograph, of which there are hundreds, thousands, and even tens of thousands, or a 1/1 message or even a direct personal contact with the player.

yeah you can't "hold it in your hand," but now explain to me why a reprint is less desirable than an actual original card. THERE IS NO REASON except for subjective opinion and a mutually agreed-upon set of "rules." Like, why is a rookie card worth more than all the others? THERE IS NO REASON except we all agree to it.

How many people have zero dollars in their pocket, but assure you they have "money"? How many people actually see money these days? How many gold owners really own nothing but a promise that somebody's holding it for them somewhere? How many stock owners have nothing but a line of virtual digits?

One day soon we may all agree to this. If I wasn't an old fart, I'd be all over it.

Good point, I think there is definitely opportunity for different customizations in the packs. Like they could actually include vouchers for game tickets when there is normalcy, who knows

I'd buy a pack but it looks like all they have left are the weaker stuff.

Am I missing something?

The owner of this platform is selling 1000 numbered spots of a video clip they don’t even own and people are excited about it?

Unless you get some type of licensing rights to this stuff after you purchase it, it's pretty dumb imo.
Edit: Didn't know you could relist the moments for sale, that changed everything

If enough of you are interested I can load my imgur up with a bunch of photos I find on Google and sell them to you randomly.
You won't actually own the photo of course, since I don't have rights to it, but you'll be able to click it in my album and look. You can probably even download a copy for yourself.

Am I doing 2020 right?

Long as you number them and provide each user a different number you're on your way to the riches my friend.
Your avatar brings to memory my favorite Nimoy song.

I hear the critisism, but there are large amounts of money flowing through it already. Some of the cards have sold for $4k+

I thought bitcoin was crazy 10+ years ago. Never thought Ultra modern would never be worth $100,000's in a couple of years. Never thought Pokemon cards would hit $1,000,000's. Never thought fantasy sports would be worldwide.

Getting over denial sometimes is tough. NBAtopshot looks even more ridiculous than anything i saw before. But looking into this for the last week. i can see a huge spike in price when the game becomes live. This might have some type of fantasy sports + bitcoin + collectibles all rolled up in one .

I will just sell some physical cards from my collection and buy a couple thousand of this "stuff" just incase it blows up.

It has such a low entry cost at $12 a pack or $1 a card in its marketplace. Who knows?

Going to invest about $2000 . I have lost much more money in other investments in life.

Some people go out drinking or golf and spend much more, vacations cost much more, my kids new engine mods cost more.
