Depends on the product, and the length of time past release. All you have to do is calculate the expected return and compare it to the box price.

Example: When UEFA sapphire dropped last year it was clear that the Fati and Haaland cards would bring $500 with ease and with no grading. This was the same time boxes were selling for $400-$450 a piece. With the checklist size, you would average a Fati or Haaland every other box. So basically, all you had to do was come up with an average return of $225 (roughly) per box not counting those guys to break even. I ran the numbers and realized that the expected return on a box at the time they were selling for $450 was close to $550, and that was not counting color luck or grading. I proceeded to buy every single box I could find. I opened them until the box price went over my expected value, then I stopped opening. I then waited and let the sealed price grow and cashed in.

You can find a couple products like this every year that are "backwards" in terms of value. Due to the gambling aspect, you should expect to lose on most things you open. Use math to determine when that isn't the case and you can clean up.

The beauty of what I do ( collect sealed / keep sealed ) happens when you guys and gals open Wax, hopefully get the Singles you’re looking for, and my similar sealed box gets that tiny bit rarer. Do this over and over about 10,000+ times —— and you’ve got a whole buncha’ RC’s out there to be bought / sold / traded, and I have an ever increasingly rare Wax Collection.... rare and valuable going hand in hand

As the others have said, it depends. I made out like a bandit on a few releases… GPK sapphire, F1, and 2021 Bowman Sapphire have been okay. And then got smoked on 2020 TCU update sapphire, 2020 Bowman sapphire, and UEFA I sold way too early.

I’ve been able to make some nice profits and unrealized gains on the above products. It’s all about opening when cheap. I think my experience and time in the hobby has paid off in a big way as I’ve learned to identify value in the wax market.

For example I knew GPK was undervalued at the time so I opened a ton of that in the $150-200 range. I sold complete sets and parallels and then graded a bunch and I’m sitting on 35-45 Adam Bombs, including some parallels.

Now if I held, I would’ve saved myself a ton of work and probably made more money too. (Those were $600+ Sealed at one point)

Also was busting F1 at $450-500 range and held a few which are now about $700.

Holding is the way to go most of the time but I like the thrill of opening and chasing big hits, building sets, etc.. That’s just my experience so far.

Holding and Investing in sealed wax is the best move someone can make with modern cards. You essentially are betting on the entire rookie or draft class. In order to “lose” on the product you need every rookie or draft pick to crap their pants completely. Or if the entire market crashes, but then everyone in the entire hobby loses.

This is what I like to see. I do enjoy stuff of the past few years but it seems like everyone has stacks of it. It’s the rarities that are really awesome to see.

I have just 3 boxes of 18 S2. Had bought 5, but 2 boxes had lots of damage thanks to USPS beating the crap out of the shipping box! I opened the damaged boxes since I wasn't going to risk future resale charge backs. Got base ohtani and 2 inserts... brutal, and they had damage corners.
