Default You Guys...I did it. I'm FINALLY part of the club!

For those who follow my IG I opened this mailday live nearly 2 weeks ago now. Unquestionably the best mailday I've ever had or will have.

How good? Well the 24-kt. gold Mitch (which I posted in my rolling Mitch PC thread earlier today) was only the second best card...and truthfully it wasn't even close.

You all know I'm a collector on a budget, I only own one card that I spent more than $600 on, and it's my MJ auto (duh lol). Well, I got a decent amount of cash for Christmas and realized that, with a couple of MAJOR expenditures likely in the next year or two (house purchase, starting a family), that it was pretty much now or never to do it.

First...the back. Gives it away pretty quickly I think lol

And the front- I've never had a card where I felt that blacking out the serial number was necessary but, well, it's probably a good idea

1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan RC BGS 8.5

I'm FINALLY in the MJ rookie club! Thanks for looking everyone...expect a separate thread about crossover potential soon

Is Mitch in the crowd? If not, feels like it doesn’t belong in your pc. I can PM my address to help move it?

Very nice. I'm slowly building 86 Fleer set myself, this will be the last one no doubt. Nice grade!

I joined the club on New Year's eve. I got a BGS 2.5, but I'm just happy to have 1.

I will never own one of these cards unless the bubble pops, well it is a certainty according to some people on these forums I will have to be happy with my 1987 Fleer, 1988 Fleer, and 1998 Fleer All Star cards of MJ when I get them back from PSA. Should have bought it last year when I came back into the hobby

LOVE threads like this and comments like this one.

It's fun to live vicariously through the wealthy people (or investors or funds or whoever it is) spending $750k on the PSA 10s but it's not the reality for the large majority of us. When it comes to certain cards even a beat to crap PSA ''Authentic'' can be the centerpiece of a collection for somebody. I'd much rather read a story about an average collector landing and appreciating a beat up grail card than read about a millionaire loading up his portfolio.

Congrats on the 2.5 and congrats to the OP on his new pickup! I'm not a basketball collector but I'd still love to own an MJ Fleer. If I ever do get one it'll probably be a worn out PSA 1 and I'd be thrilled to own it.

haha this made me chuckle for sure. Thanks for all the comments guys!

@Dajuan-yep, still a tennis pro. Covid caused my former club to shut down so I was unemployed for a few months, found a job at a new club that is unfortunately a VERY long commute (1 hr 25 minutes each way), but a very well-off area so my paycheck went up about 60% so that, coupled with the cash influx from the holidays, made it the best time for me to snag one.

@bigdog2003 Hey that's amazing man, glad you managed to snag one as well! It's real, that's all that matters. Truly never thought I'd own one in any grade either. Congrats to you!

@DluA I hear you. In full disclosure, I called her before smashing the BIN on this one. I won't say how much, but suffice it to say that every single RC in this grade that has sold since has sold for at least $1500 more, averaging about $5500 more than what I paid. I told her the amount but she was guessing something similar. She was surprised I called and double-checked, she knows I'm good with this stuff. Investment is not even the primary or secondary goal, and my wife knows that. Honestly she's been mostly on board with it since I hopped back into the hobby a decade ago. She even busts boxes with me on occasion haha. Once I sold about $1200 worth of MJs to fund our 5-year anniversary trip a few years ago, she realized they're likely to go up in value (90s MJs anyways) and that I would be willing and able to sell them if necessary, so she's been totally on board since

@byron haha I'm pretty sure he was still at K-State but this one isn't going anywhere- except maybe PSA

Thanks again everybody, this purchase literally made me second-guess everything I know about my collection. I started a spreadsheet of every MJ that has a SV of $100+ and I took the five MJs I currently own with a SV of $1000+ (RC, RC sticker in BGS 8, Scoring Kings BGS 9, buyback auto /5 BGS 9, hoops frequent flyer upgrade BGS 9) and put them in my dad's safe. Crazy times. Should probably put my Mitch PMG red with them now that I think about it! Will still probably bring them to the national just to show them off...if I ever manage to go!

Welcome to the Club, but I think you are always in this club even though you don't actual own the card before and same thing goes for everybody else. The hobby is our family.
