Default Why are people not more upset about the series 1 print run?

The series 1 print run has supposedly doubled this year. If that is true i dont like it. Im not one of these we are on a bubble that is going to burst tommorow guys but if that is true that they doubled the print run than topps is being grossly negligent about the future of our hobby and rest assured that if we buy out the pr this year they will just double it again next year. Im 23 and want to collect cards til the day i die and topps blatant uncaring attitude towards the longevity of our hobby in order to chase money now is concerning. Im honestly surprised there isnt more of an uproar or at least a consensus opinion that we shouldnt buy up all the series 1 for fear of them doubling it again next year and the year after that.

If they doubled the print run and it sells out, isn't that a good sign for the hobby?

BTW there's plenty of people on this forum who like me have yet to open a pack of 2021 Topps and don't plan on it.

Does anyone even know the print run of last year to discern what the print run might be this year?

This is me. I haven’t opened a thing since 2019 series 2 or chrome came out.

it would mean our hobby is thriving currently yes but it also means that topps can then justify doubling it again next year. There has to be a point where the print run is too much. I personally dont know what it is but it seems like we are going to get there eventually. I think topps raising the print run slightly but if they did double it (and there seems to be evidence they did) that seems like an unhealthy amount to raise a print run in one year.

You weren't around for the late 80s/early 90s were you?

I haven't seen a pack anywhere yet, so obviously they need to make more. I'm 56 and have been buying them since age 6. Many of these cards are sitting in peoples basements unopened. How is that helping the hobby?

I opened one box of bowman this year to scratch the itch but thats it since 2019 chrome for me. i am also worried about buying singles tho this year in all honesty. I mean having two times the cards changes the psa pop and they also increased the amount of parallels this year which will affect prices there too. I mean god forbid we have an acuna, soto or even a trout type player come out of this class and then have twice the psa pop and multiple parallels numbered to the same number or to a close number.

i mean admittedly i wasnt around for those years but it has to be obvious that topps is just going to keep doubling the print run every year we keep buying it all.

just because there is the demand for more doesn't mean they should make more. And thats the issue i have is that topps will see the print run sell and say oh lets print even more next year.

WTF did everyone expect this year? If flippers are buying out 90% of retail, then Topps is going to make them choke on it. If everyone is patient and Target and Walmart hold to 3 boxes at a time then there will be plenty of opportunities to buy at retail... and when flippers can’t sell it all they’ll race to the bottom trying to unload it.

Topps goal is to sell everything +1 pack left over. I'm a wholesaler (not cards), but the goal is not to run out, at least this early.

Topps will print less when distributors order less. They are not here to protect us from ourselves.

yeah i mean thats wholesale 101 i guess but most wholesalers dont run the risk of losing sales down the road by doing that. Topps is grabbing as much cash as they can now but that could cost them sales down the road if we do run into another bubble pop scenario.

Topps’ job is to provide product to their addicts. That’s it and that’s all. If you believe more than that you’ve probably read too many Gary V posts.

They don't care about a bubble if the wholesalers are selling out. Yeah, it sucks, but they are losing my sales now. I want to give them my money today and I can't. They don't make a dime if I go to ebay and buy a vintage card instead.

Default Why are people not more upset about the series 1 print run?

Series 1 print run was around 200k last year... this year is is 400k?!? Can someone confirm this?

With factory sets, this might mean close to 600k base cards / person

To be honest I expected Topps to revert slightly back to when the retail odds were brutal compared to hobby. Especially for flagship parallels-from foils all the way up. That would allow the GIANT retail presses to really get revving into junk wax era. The fact that they haven’t done that yet makes very little sense to me as it would strengthen their growing direct to customer offerings as well as discourage scummy Target denizens. All the while making Joe Collector happy he and his son can find a blaster on a whim.

I think you can search SP 2021 Topps and realize that the SPs aren't that SP'ed.

Based on the centering issues I have seen from my own breaks and those posted online, the PSA pop, at least for 10's, may not be any higher than the past few years.
