Default More exact dates on 1984-86 Star releases?

For instance, the set known as 1984-85 Star has Jordans that were released some time after the Court Kings with the Jordan in it showing him at the '85 Dunk Contest. The #101 was reportedly released after that, and the #288 presumably was released after the ROY voting came in, so I'm assuming after June or so? The basketballgold info & FAQs seem not to say. So, the question: do any experts here know what part of the year these sets were released?

I ordered the 84-85 set directly from Star at the time of release. I may have mentioned in another thread that I still have the original Star order forms. That has helped me keep the timeline together.

Just to be clear the #101 came out before Court Kings #26. No if and’s or but’s about it. Star sent the team sets out in three sets of eight bags, on three separate occasions in winter-spring of 85. The bulls team bag / 101 came out in group 2, which from my notes arrived in February of that year.
As you Already mentioned Court Kings 26 picture was taken on February 8 or 9 of 1985 All-Star weekend. The Blue Court Kings set arrived around May of that year as I recall. The star order form states that court kings two would arrive “late spring” 1985

The 101 photo was taken December 14th 1984 at the Meadowlands.

If that's the case then basketballgold is mistaken in its FAQ answer:

Quote:
FAQ: Which card came out first - the 1984-85 Court Kings 5 X 7 #26 Michael Jordan or the 1984-85 #101 Michael Jordan?

Answer: Several credible sources and original Star Co. dealers recall that the 1984-85 Court Kings #26 came out before the 1984-85 #101. If such is the case that the 1984-85 Court Kings #26 came out first, this would not take away from the importance of the #101. Ironically, people often debate whether the #101 or the 1986-87 Fleer #57 should be Jordan's rookie card, without realizing that the Court Kings #26 was likely Michael Jordan's first professionally released card. If normal principles applied, the 1984-85 Court Kings would be considered an XRC because it was distributed as part of a subset and the #101 would be considered a rookie card because it was Jordan's first team issued card from a regular base set. Because the Court Kings was part of a subset and not a regular issued set, it normally would have been designated an XRC, with the #101 being designated a rookie card. This would apply to the Olajuwon and Barkley cards as well and lead to the terms of "True Extended Rookie Card" ("TXRC") and "True Rookie Card" ("TRC").

2000man is correct.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for Basketball Gold and Kahn but for this one instance, they are incorrect. The Star 101 came out 1st. I was one of those old enough to have been alive when Star Co. first offered these cards through one of the original distributors, The Card Collectors Co. in New York City. They were one of the oldest card stores having been started by Woody Gelman, the legendary Topps Card Co. executive. The defunct store was originally located at 494 Hudson Street in the West Village and ran by Woody’s son, Richard Gelman. They were one of the 1st distributors of Star Co. material.

The regular 1984-85 set came out in THREE different series between JAN. 1985 to MAY 1985. (Cards 1-100) (Cards 101 -200 - with famed Jordan 101) and (Cards 201 to 288).

What is commonly referred to as the 1984-85 Court Kings set (5" x 7") was offered in 2 separate series (cards 1-25 are Yellow) and (cards 26-50 are Blue). Jordan is card #26 and came out in the WINTER of 1985.

In short, the 1984-85 Star Jordan #101 XRC (TRC) is the 1st cardboard issue ever made of Michael Jordan. Period.

Oh no. Damn facts getting in the way of a good story again.

Would be fun to point out who started the myth about the CKII being "1st". It wasn't the guy who built the Cardboard Gold page.

Appreciate you back me up on this. Yes the basketballgold website Is solid and a great reference tool. That being said those old enough, and lived through that era know where things may differ a bit. The website is inaccurate . 101 beat court kings to market by significant time.

Basketballgold really has to correct this. The Court Kings Jordan was released in late 1985.

Has anyone ever cared which Kobe RC came out first? The first Griffey RC to market wasn't the UD. More like last. Same with the SP Jeter. Anyone ever ask, "What was the first TB12 RC to market so's we can nab the TRUE RC... TRUE XRC?". This entire story is not only fake but has never been relevant to any card, ever. It's Jordan relevance was crafted decades after release.

I remember where I saw this story first. I don't know for sure that seller originally crafted the story. I do know he had a ton of them to sell.

As for the bag with the MJ #195 and 288, did that come out the last? Was it in May with the other May-released sets or was it sometime later? I thought award voting results weren't known until June?

Any dates on the other sets with MJ in them, namely the numerous sets with his cards depicted at Allvintagecards?

Yes in series three. There was a 12 card special bag on the order form. Ended up being Olympics and award winners. MJ won ROY on April 30th so set arrived early summer.

Thank you for posting this. This really clears up the confusion about the release dates.
