Default The term Walk Off

It seems like everything is a 'Walk Off' these days.

Explain to me like I'm 5 what it means.

Last night for the Cards/Dodgers game, bottom of the 9th. One on, two out, a 2-1 count. Chris Taylor hits a HR.

To me, that isn't a walk off. That's just winning the game.

To me, and I guess I'm wrong, but a walk off would be if the first batter hit a HR on the first pitch in the bottom of the 9th to end win the game.

So please what is a "walk off"

Thanks!

A play that immediately ends the game in the bottom of the 9th (or later) inning.

Why would it matter which batter or pitch it is?

Walk off would be a bases loaded walk to win the game

A walk off is a play that ends the game but was not the final out of the game. only home teams can walk off.

My understanding is that the term “walk off” refers to what the defensive team does in these situations. They “walk off” the field without recording 3 outs in the inning. The only situation where the defense would do that at the end of the game is when the offense ends the game by scoring

Ok this makes more sense. So kind of like in football, the first team to have the ball in OT, if they score a TD that ends the game as the other team never gets the ball. So essentially that is a walk off.

My thinking was always it had to be that the first batter up in the inning had to score on the first pitch thrown (HR or inside the park HR). In the game last night, the Dodgers had a guy on second, and the batter's count was already 2 balls, 1 strike before he hit the HR. To me that is just winning the game.

But i seem to get it a bit better now. I guess I really just don't like the term Walk Off as it seems to be used for a lot of things.

Well….no. It isn’t. A walkoff has a strict definition and usage.

The simplest ELI5 definition anyone could give is “no more game after. game done. game over. Bye bye. go home”

A walk-off is it. No more baseball game to be played. The game has been won by the home team.

A true walk off only happens when a game reaches the 30th inning. It’s an obscure rule, but if both teams are tied after 29 innings, the opposing managers have to face each other in a “Walk Off” judged by the head umpire. Essentially, they have to strut from from the mound to home plate at the same time.

It’s only ever happened once in an exhibition game where John McGraw beat Connie Mack in a Walk Off in 1906. McGraw won by default because Mack only wore suits and you aren’t allowed on the field unless you are wearing a uniform. But to his credit, McGraw didn’t mail it in and strutted pretty well that day.

The real question should be are Sudden Death and Walk Off the same thing?

I don't think its that far fetched to assume you might be the only person on the planet confused about what a walk off is

This made me laugh more than it should have. Fantastic choice of managers for your “walk off”.
