Default Should the Warriors trade Jordan Poole?

After watching last night's game against the Raptors, and seeing how much more effective Donte Divecenzo (+24, 11 assists, 1 TO) is than Jordan Poole (-13, 2 assists, 3 TO) in the Warriors system, I'm starting to wonder if the best way out of the Warriors upcoming luxury tax crunch might be to trade Poole and use that $$$ to resign DDV and extend Draymond.

Because it's pretty clear by now that DDV is a much better fit for the Warriors style of play than JP is.

There are several teams with plenty of cap room and more 1st round picks than they know what to do with (OKC, Utah, San Antonio, New York) who could use a young player like JP to try and rebuild around, or alternatively they could try and trade him before the trade deadline (maybe to Indiana for Myles Turner and a 1st) for someone who could help them this year.

Thoughts?

Rebuild around? Poole is an okay sixth man. He is not a superstar. Sorry your team paid him like one.

You think that the front office who won't even trade away their bad young players to go all-in on another championship run (wiseman & moody) will trade the 1 young player they have that is actually really good?

Pretty much this. He's a good Jordan Clarkson, Jamal Crawford, etc.... If JP is who you're building around, you are going to have problems. I don't think any team would do that though. I'd say they are stuck with Poole with his new contract until the salary cap goes up again, then who knows.

On a team where he's the primary scorer and his usage rate is much higher, he's have no trouble averaging 25-30 ppg. Heck....he's averaging 21 ppg on the Warriors as the #3/#4 guard.

There are plenty of NBA teams who could use a player like that....

But he clearly isn't going to be a #1 on a decent team. If a team is rebuilding, why sellout to still miss the playoffs with him as your #1?

He probably could average 25-30 on the worst team in the league and jacking up 30 shots lol. He's averaging that high because he plays with Steph and Klay. Teams would much rather him shoot then those 2.

Except that he's not actually really good, at least in the Warriors system.

He's a streaky scorer who can put up 30 one night but only 10 the next.

He's a poor ball-handler who turns the ball over way too frequently and doesn't pass well.

He's a mediocre defender.

The one thing he does have is that incredible first step, which allows him to get to the rim against most defenders. But too often he settles for bad threes, and when he does drive, his passing isn't good enough to create good chances for team-mates when a big rotates over to stop his drive.

And that team will be a bottom feeder.

Jordan Poole stats without steph curry last 2 seasons (32 games):
27-5-4

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Not many bad teams are going to trade for a jordan Poole type contract. Maybe you get a low tier playoff team offering up a protected 1st rounder similar to the CJ McCollum deal but that type of trade happened mid season to a team needing a push. Can’t see the warriors making a mid season deal.

I’d expect the warriors to just deal with a ridiculous luxury tax bill until the brutal Klay Contract comes off the books at the end of next season. Is extending a 33 year old draymond even exciting to begin with? At some point this team is going to need to be in rebuilding mode.

Is that how you would sell him to other teams? Haha

Based on what exactly? The Warriors are 18-16 this season with steph curry and 7-8 without him. Do you know how flawed a roster needs to be to have steph curry and still only be slightly over .500? Despite that, Poole is still able to carry that flawed roster to just under a .500 record WITHOUT steph while averaging 28-4-3 in the process.

Based on him being a below average three point shooter and terrible defender.

But by all means, let’s all pray the Warriors trade the guy to a team where he can be the star. I’d love to see the outcome.

Of course his averages are going to be up when Steph is out... I'd surely hope he can score more when he gets 7 more shots. With or without Steph, he's inefficient and would never be a #1 on even a decent team. Sorry if you can't see that, but it's the truth.

Yeah, I thought this was proven a while ago when someone brought that up. Isn’t Poole the player warriors need with an aging steph and klay? He’s proven he can lead the offense when those players are out and what would have happened last year without him when steph and klay were out? Seems odd to kick him to the curb after a win against the raptors when divecenzo, a player I thought warrior fans made fun of, had a better game. Warriors need scoring options and Poole has more 40 point games this season then divecenzo has 20 point games.

And this whole debate isn’t about Poole being THE guy right? Just throwing him away to sign divecenzo and extend draymond? Lol no, I would rather have Poole. Warriors have that money, they can continue spending more then any other franchise and extend draymond while keeping Poole.

Im not surprised he’s shooting worse. He’s worried Dray gonna jump out and punch him in the face.

He knows drays history, the nuts are next. A mouthpiece to the eye from steph and he could be on that Ben Simmons path and never mentally recover.

The OP seemed to insinuate that he could be THE guy for certain teams to build around. I'd definitely agree that Poole is obviously better than DDV.

Poole is a good 6th man. He will never be a #1 on a good team. The Warriors just made the mistake of paying him like a star.

Oh ok. I think that is wishful thinking from a warriors fan to get back max value for a trade. No Poole isn’t that guy. He’s a second option on a mediocre team. But he was big for the warriors when they needed him during a championship season and has proven he can be a third option on a championship team. I don’t think you give that up with him being so young for divecenzo and old draymond.

Absolutely and most definitely a semi-major contributor to their Championship, I don't think Golden State is that stupid to trade him.
