Default Mike Trout Investment Potential: 2024+

There's been various threads that have touched on this subject, but wanted to create a dedicated one that captures the present moment.

Given Trout's well documted career accomplishments to-date, depressed prices, injury history, age and potential for "counting stats" going forward (and/or a rebound in the coming years), is he a "Buy", "Sell", or "Hold" going forward? What do you think?

I know he's not the talk of the hobby like he once was, but were his years of outperformance/outright dominance enough to put him in the inner circle of all-time greats? Will he continue to be collected for years to come?

2011 topps update us175 mike trout "psa 10" -9 -8 -pack -gold -lot -Anniversary -diamond -Cognac -blue -red -target -walmart -auto -dna -2018 -archives -reprint -best -berger -bergers

Last 3 years. Even the thumbnail image shows the trend clearly.

Pop 6,192 in PSA-10

I'd expect prices to remain suppressed as more and more people sell off what they acquired for less than what it's worth today. Certainly the case for me, holding one PSA-10 update I bought for ~$135.

But if he makes a run at another MVP, prices could certainly rise.

His prices aren't rising -- I'm almost certain of that. His prime years are over. He hasn't had 600 PA since 2019. He has a chronic back issue that seems to adversely affect his hitting. He's well into his 30s now. Not a good combo.

Like any other hobby giant, they get forgotten about/ people move on as they age. Trout is a long term investment now and nothing wrong with that. Enjoy collecting and just have fun!

I agree ( painfully ) with much of what you said - except “well into his 30’s” …. He is currently 32 / still has time to get the ship back on course, and have 6-7ish? very productive years left.

Frank Thomas was weird because he had multiple bounce-back seasons -- 2000, 2003, and 2006 with the A's.

Trout is a sell for the foreseeable future. The hobby is going to move on quickly, whether people like it or not.

Regardless of how his career plays out, his cards will appreciate in value, when not if is the only debate.

i think Mike Trout is one of those players that although he was awesome, he'll eventually over time, get lost in the shuffle of the game of baseball because he never transcended the game the way others did.

in other words, he's Frank Robinson, one of the games greats, but he'll forever be overshadowed by other greats of their time and just overall as a player, if that makes any sense.

i think a lot of the allure on Trout is that he was viewed as the next Mickey Mantle, yet he played on the Angels, not the Yankees or Red Sox. he made the playoffs i think once, never went to or won a World Series, and just didn't have the cultural impact other players had.

Ohtani and Harper had and will have a bigger impact on the game, and you'll still be talking about them 10 or 15 years from now. not with Trout.

The only people still talking about Trout are those trying to sell his cards.

Trout is actually a big collector of his own cards. He's said he wants to pass them down to his kid. He seems like a good guy.

It's a shame he didn't get to play in the postseason more often during his prime. Winning three MVPs but having only one postseason series is not right.

what's sad is that Trout really was a great player in his prime. i just don't think he really took advantage of it with his marketability and the team he played for being garbage all those years didn't help.

and then when he lands another superstar in their prime on his team, Ohtani outshined Trout to the tune of the biggest contract i believe in sports history to leave the Angels.

Unfortunately, being on the Angels his whole career and that being a lacking team competitively really has not served him any justice.

As for value, it’s has to be low right now. But I think he’ll still be cherished as a future HOF’er. Just as an active player who’s battling injuries on a bad team he’s being outshined by a lot of up and comers (e.g. Ohtani, J-Rod, Acuna, J. Holliday, Carroll, etc.)

He gets an A+ for loyalty, but a D on Team choice
I’m concerned that the Angels gave him an OK to get traded, and he didn’t jump at the chance, much less do nothing about it ( at least not yet …. )

It’s hard for me to see him being so great, but apparently lack the desire to be on a great Team ~ have at least a decent shot at getting a WS Ring

You know what's funny? In the 7 years before Trout debuted, the Angels were one of the better teams in the league.

..,,and this is why I understand the Collectors who focus on Vintage ( but not me! I thrive on the uncertain future, not the already determined past )
