Default Topps Damage Replacement Nonsense

UPDATE: After back and forths... Topps ultimately agreed the value was off by $550 in total and is supplying replacements to make it right.

Usually topps has been pretty decent about replacing damaged cards with either same or similiar value. Finally got the ole screw job on this one...

Late last year I sent in a 2022 Topps Chrome Update Blue Bobby Witt refractor that was mangled. They looked it up on Beckett online and determined it was a $25 card and sent me two cards worth about $25. No communication was provided to me prior to receiving the replacements other than the standard email stating what was coming and closing the case. Conversed with them a few times until they stated that the decision was final. I opened a Better Business Bureau complaint and after a couple back and forths they sent an additional card valued at $200. Sounds crazy that they would respond but it did work. Worth a shot if you feel the market value was not met as they seem to respond to those complaints.

As crazy as it sounds, I will check Beckett before I send anything for replacement again and wait till it reaches true market value.

I was pleased with my recent experience. I had a Jim Palmer auto out of Brooklyn /99 that looked like someone took a hammer to one corner. Within a few days of sending, they sent a Wade Boggs Brooklyn /60. I'd have preferred a Palmer back, but I feel the replacement is very fair.

I will say that the advice to send with delivery confirmation is a must. I think they just toss most stuff that comes in without it. I learned that lesson with a Mariano Rivera Red /5 form Ginter X.

I had 2 good experiences with damage replacements and 1 bad one in the last year.

The good: I had a Roderick Arias 2022 Bowman Chrome Refractor Auto with a crease in it. They remade the card. I graded it and it came back a 10. I pulled an Adley Rutschman 2023 Series One Silver Pack Auto /99 that had a huge dent in it. They remade that card as well, it graded a 9.

The bad: 2022 Topps Update Sapphire Royce Lewis Auto /25 that had a large roller indentation on the back. The card was probably around $300 in value at the time I sent it in. I got back an 2022 Topps Update Jeremy Pena sticker base auto and a Nick Pivetta 2022 Topps Update green sapphire /75. Probably about $80 total value

I sent in a casas topps chrome sapphire gold /50 that came back a psa 6 and got a francisco alvarez update sapphire gold /60

I'm guessing the alvarez is /50 and it is just a typo but not a bad replacement

And there are examples of Topps giving 1/1's for damage replacements:

I'm still not 100% convinced that's real. You can peal those Topps stickers off and put anyone you want in there. Seems like a cheeky little prank to me.

For context here is my Julio from last year from the product. Bottom corners also had issues. This was typical for the gold and purple parallels as well as the 1987 cherry tree inserts.

I had a Ethan Salas mojo refractor that had some print lines and they sent back... an Ethan Salas mojo refractor and a pack of cards (2022 Archives maybe?), so I was okay with it.

The reason I ask was perhaps Topps wasn't interested in replacing cards for you to try and grade, or they disagreed with the level of damage. Maybe if you sent in all of the damaged cards they'd be more receptive.

Just a thought.

No, I haven't opened any Topps since Fanatics purchased them. I've also never sent in cards for replacements as I don't grade.

If Topps doesn’t agree with the level of damage they return the cards. I don’t see anywhere OP or anyone mentioned grading.

bub is correct

grading has nothing to do with getting worthless damaged cards and wanting them replaced with undamaged cards

the issue is that they think an Ohtani insert is comparable to an Ohtani /50 plus 5 other low number parallels (including the Nootbaar that at the time of release was a $200 card)

Perhaps I should have been more explicit -- Topps likely doesn't care about helping you maximize resale value. Why would the condition matter if you didn't plan on grading and/or selling?

I mentioned the base cards because maybe they would have been more receptive to like for like replacements if it wasn't the most valuable cards being sent back.

its not up for topps to decide or care about... its part of their T's & C's to replace damaged cards at like value... period end of story

what the end user does with them is of no concern to topps

I usually don’t get too concerned with a little ding here or there but I did send a card in once that had a big divot in it. The replacement was on par with what I sent in so I was satisfied.

Update from Topps...They now agree the Bobby Miller was undervalued by $100 and are shipping a comparable card.... for the topps japan here was their valuation and notes:

Matt Olson /50 = $5
Steven Matz /50 = $2
Jo Adell /50 = $2
Ohtani /50 = $50 - Used /75 sale as benchmark
Nootbar /99 = about $5 since /50 sold for $10
Marsh /99 = under $4 since /75 sold for $3.80
Mookie /25 = $24

Shohei Ohtani (87B-1) Cherry Tree Parallel $93 based on last (6) RAW sales

clearly they dont realize the /99 sell for better than most other parallels...if anyone has any nootbaar cherry blossoms for $5 let me know

Thanks for the update. Glad Topps reconsidered the replacement for the Miller auto.

Glad to see you are finally getting something a bit more fair.

On another note, its always interesting to see how many Topps/Fanatics bootlickers there are here...
