2024 Topps Shohei Ohtani 50/50

𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗦𝗧 𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞: The Ohtani 50/50 product is officially here.

Featuring a 100-card base set, there’s 1 card for each of Ohtani’s 50 homers and 50 steals. Every card in the product is of Shohei Ohtani.

Key chase cards include parallels, relics & autographs. And of course, the ultimate chase: the 3 unique 1/1 Dynasty Black game-worn relic autograph cards.

All parallels (both base & autographs) will be Topps Chrome.

This product releases TOMORROW at 12p EST. Packs retail for $25, and 10-pack boxes will be $239.99.

First, I kinda love a set for milestones, and if done right (a card for each homer and each steal, and each picture of that specific event), it would be an absolute home run in my mind. And I even think it'd be cool to expand this to some other milestones like Topps Moments & Milestones back in the day. Not sure how I feel about each one (if it even expands to others anyways) being their own distinct "product" rather than all wrapped up under one, but it makes it way easier to target the specific ones you care about at least

What I don't get, so the Dynasty Black card is actually going to be released in this? And not a separate Dynasty Black release? Is DB going not going to have its own release at all and will just be inserts to various products, kind of like how Bowman Black autographs were released in the 2010s? Not sure

Either way, I think this is cool, and if it's not completely cost prohibitive (at $25 a pack it probably will be), I'd be interested in doing a base set. But interested to learn more!

For this part we do know, the plan is to just insert DB into other releases, no stand alone DB releases.

I grew up when 40/40 was still a hallowed milestone reach. It's why Eric Davis still stands out in my mind as one of the greatest power/speed threats to ever play - the coulda/shoulda.

So, while I'm not a fan specifically of Ohtani (not to be confused with being able acknowledge his greatness), I actually like the idea of this set and might actually try for a box since I know the release time.

The Dynasty Black chases are a nice bonus, but I'm into the 50/50 commemoration more than anything.

Even after Acuna's 40/70 last year, I didn't really think I'd see 50/50. So this commemorative set has some personal resonance that motivates me to buy it.

That's probably why he's getting an entire release dedicated to him.

The 50-50 achievement just happened, so Topps is trying to strike while the iron is still hot and the season is still going on.

The Dynasty brand is being used as a vehicle for the 1/1 logoman product hit. That's the reason for the random inclusion of Dynasty in a TC product. The 1/1 patch is from the pants he wore when he achieved 50-50, btw -- way to miss the lead, OP.

This will be bought up by breakers -- Topps wants to sell it before the Dodgers possibly get bounced from the postseason.

On the surface, this is a tempting product. Naturally, they have provided close to zero info, like what you actually get for $25, but I guess that's besides the point. Products like this in the past have been loaded and end up being decent value. In this case, products like this means stuff that hasn't really been done before, like 2020 Finest Flashback (still can't believe that was $50/box), 2013 Turkey Red (the SP'd autos were nice and the Machado RC was a pricey one for a while), the first runs of Topps Now and Project 2020, and even 2024 Heritage Minis.

But you just know that if this product sells well they'll run it into the ground and any value it might have will get crushed by later, specialer product. This will not be the only 50/50 product Topps comes out with between now and the 2026 season. I expect 50/50 stuff to be littered throughout 2025 product, inserts or standalone. Unless you hit a Shohei Auto or #/5 or less parallel, nearly identical cards will come out later and will be the more valuable choice. I mean, they already made a whole Transcendent product with 50 individual cards for Ohtani and Ichiro.

I like the concept. I don’t like that they won’t include anything past 50/50. Why not do the entire season of stats?

Because they are going to do other Ohtani releases and each need to have a cohesive and distinct theme. They're going to release a lot of different Ohtani Dodgers cards to maximize the return on their exclusive.

I might try to pick up a nice looking parallel of the 50th HR and 50th SB cards but I've got no interest in buying boxes of the stuff.

EDIT: ONLY want these cards if they're actual photographs of the events. If they just use stock Shohei pics for the cards I'm out.

guaranteed this sells out in less than 10 min and the site crashes 5 min before it goes on sale.

Would love to see them release a boxed set of all 50 base cards later on for the non gamblers.
