I would say hold this. Good pull. Sucks they're sticker autos, but still a real rare card.
Most of the 2024 rookie QBs (Caleb, Daniels, Maye, Nix) don't even have autos in the set... you hit one of the best ones: JJ McC or Penix or Rattler are probably the jackpots.

He has nowhere to go but up. He hasn't played at all. His cards are crippled right now with injury fears.
This card is probably $1k sold today... but potential to be $10k if he starts and does well soon? So why sell low???
It's a great team for any QB (great WR/TEs, great QB coach), and he had a fantastic first preseason game before injury.

Look at Cousins, Darnold having career years on Vikings.

The fact that JJ had knee surgery in August 2024, had pain on rehab, had another knee surgery in Nov is the concern. Nobody really knows how far back he is or isn't.

What Minn does in FA this month for QBs will show you what they think of McCarthy's rehab progress (or lack thereof?). They didn't trade up to have him ride pine if healthy.

Dont know if the sale is real, but 130point says one sold for 6K in February.

That being said, Id absolutely hold. He got rave reviews from OConnell and the knee injury was way overblown by the media. Meniscus tear and initial reports said he could have been back after 6 weeks if they took the easy route. They chose to be conservative knowing they had a plan for him. I invested in him recently. Is he going to be a superstar? I have no idea. Its all risk, but I think its a good one to take.

And the 2024 prizm auto Penix gold vinyl /5 have sold for $7.5k, $8.3k, $11k. McCarthy is 3 years younger than Penix.
(no comps of other rook 2024 first round QBs Nix or Caleb or Daniels or Maye as they didn't do autos in Prizm)

This McCarthy is easily a sale of at least $1k right now... but with potential for $5k or $10k+ soon.
People who laugh at that apparently don't understand comps. At all. These autos /5 are about the rarest cards in Panini's top set.
He hit the one of the top two RC QBs available (Penix). Wait and see how McCarthy does. Vikings traded up for JJ for a reason.

People aren't laughing that $1K is high but extremely low.

You brought up Penix as comps and said McCarthy is younger but somehow would sell for 10% of Penix? That doesn't make any sense.

I would put the OP McCarthy auto /5 in the $2-$3k range today. The injury is scary to many ppl... for now. Having a surgery August, a setback, another surgery November, no real football action 2024 rook year is not awesome.

Penix is the clear starter and has looked good in real game action.

[again, I'm a Vikings fan, pretty sure McC will be fine and def hope he is... but not buying his cards with a very cloudy crystal ball on injury as I rarely buy rooks unless I feel they're way undervalued]

... what if the Vikings spent pretty big $$ on QB and re-signed Darnold or signed Cousins back (or Mac Jones or something) here in March? It'd be a clear indicator that JJ's knee is not well. His cards would tank.
...similarly, if Vikings bring in nobody for QB except a low end vet or late round pick and JJ has a good camp/preseason, his card values will be high again (near Caleb/Maye/Penix and just below Nix/Daniels). We'll see soon.

But, as in orig post, I would not sell JJ cards now (I have none, but that's topic of convo here)... wait and see due to massive upside. Selling now as in post #2 is selling way low.

It's not yet known what Vikes do in free agency either.

His card market has not changed one bit since release. Obviously there's a little correction because the first ones to market get a crazy premium, but the cards I have purchased have not dropped by a single dollar. They've actually gone up. I dont think people are too worried.

It looks like that 6k sale was an immediate BIN. I bet you'd get some 8k+ offers and wouldnt be surprised to see that thing sell for 5 figures. 1k is pretty hilarious.
