Default 2009-10 Fleer Ultra Hockey Kicks Off The Season

2009-10 Fleer Ultra Hockey Kicks Off The Season

Hockey is back! Well almost but it’s back in the hobby and Upper Deck has released 2009-10 Fleer Ultra Hockey with some decent rookies, 1 Rookie Redemption card and two memorabilia cards. Not bad for a $60 sticker price, but let’s see what I got!

The “Fresh Ink” cards are a tough pull and that’s makes them sought after but the late season rookies have become one of the strong points of the hockey-collecting season. Most of the time the early rookies include some very talented goaltenders and once in a while a stud who comes up when his junior team gets eliminated from the playoffs.

Chicago has some strong goaltending at the NHL level but that doesn’t mean that Antti Niemi won’t be vying for the starting job someday. The Finn was a free-agent signing back in 2008 and I think he can be a good one. His card was a “Gold Medallion Ultra Rookie”, which are somewhat rare coming in at six per box (1:8). While looking at his brand new white pads I noticed how high his pad risers are and this year the league is cracking down on that so lets see if his pads look smaller at the start of the season.

The other good rookie cards that I got were of T.J. Galliardi (Avs) and Jhonas Enroth (Buffalo goalie drafted 46th overall in 2006). Neither of those were gold but they were good. The rest are real long shots.

I did get two “Ultra Uniformity” cards. Both had game-used fabric and both were of two terrific young players. My baby blue swatch was of Bryan Little who is a budding star in Atlanta. Last season he saw time with Ilya Kovalchuk and his points rose to 51 and he added an impressive 31 goals!

My other card was a dark blue swatch of Habs young goalie Carey Price. I don’t understand those who bash him because he’s just 22-years-old and e even though his playoff performances haven’t been great the defense in front of him hasn’t been that good either. Hang in there Price fans I think he has a chance to be a good one!

The new design is clean and even the base photos are stellar. I love the Gold Medallion card of “Ovie” that I pulled plus the George Parros base was appreciated because I love his 70’s porn mustache!

The “EX” die-cuts are cool for sure and the “Go To Players” cards are fun! Come October I will see who debuts and then I will have an idea of who my redemption card could be. Maybe it will be Bobby Sanguinetti of the Rangers or John Tavares. We’ll see but right now get a box you won’t be sorry.

Can't wait for the Martin Havlat Fresh Ink or maybe even a Chris Phillips Fresh Ink.

Has Ultra ever held its value? The Crosby rookie is 4x harder in Ultra than Upper Deck but the Ultra can be had for $60 if you look.
