Default Rules for breaking boxes

Hi all,

One of the things that I enjoy most in the hobby is breaking wax. Though I have only opened a few cases and do occasionally sell on the bay, I try to break for the fun of it, expecting at most 50% back through sales of hits online. The rest I count as entertainment expense. With all of that said, are there rules that you follow when selecting what to break? Obviously price is one concern also if there are certain rookies you are chasing or if it is a new or old product. Myself I tend to follow these when considering a purchase:

1- If the online price is 20% lower than regular price at usual online site.

2- If the box is well undervalued considering the hits available.

3- If I have never busted a box of it.

4- Do I have a decent chance at a card for the PC.

These are just a examples. Let me know if you have rules you follow.

1. Is there a chance I could lose 90% of what I paid.

2. Will I be disappointed with the shi%#y hits I will get of no name players.

3. Will there be white powder all over the cards.

4. Will the online sale prices drop 60% after the first week.

If all these apply then I BUST. That way I will not be let down.

1. Is is the newest, hot product out?

2. Have I busted it before (or the previous year's versions) and had a really good break?

3. Is there a decent chance at a pc card or high end hit?

4. Is the box price close to or less than average online price?

5. How much, if any redemptions come out of the break?

These are the basics when I decide to break something. Some products I'll always bust year after year, regardless (Draft, Sterling, National Treasures). The things I usually avoid is if the product is too overpriced or if the chances for a big hit are so high that it isn't worth the time to list the cards that an average box produces. My biggest problem in wasting money though is if the first box I try is really good, I'll keep buying more of it chasing that same luck repeatedly.

Since I bust every week, the only rule is "is that the new product of the week?" Sometimes, the 2nd rule comes in "does the product look like crap on BO box breaking section?"

Since I do TTM, I consider whether or not the base would be good to send out. For example, I broke a jumbo of 2012 bowman, got probably $60-70 value in hits. Then, I sent out many of the base cards and got probably 50+ autos in addition.
Giants, Giants, Giants! Send me a PM if you have Clayton Blackburn to sell!!!
Also looking for rarer, non auto Kyle Crick stuff!

I buy maybe one box per year, but I look for cards that have autograph-friendly surface, have a lot of players I'll either see locally or can get TTM, and aren't too expensive. Therefore, Heritage Minors is usually the correct answer for me.
-current projects: Topps Chrome base autos 2004-present
-2008 Donruss EEE #190 Carson Blair "Aspirations" auto /25 (have four of the 25)
-always interested in people's unwanted Pat Neshek base cards
