Default Sale-thread etiquette?

I've noticed over the last year that it seems to be standard practice for the thread starter to post a ridiculous price + OBO just to comply with the rules. But then they proceed to PM the actual asking price continuously to people as they ask for the "best price", instead of just posting the best realistic price in the first place.

Is there some sort of strategy at work here that I don't see?
