Combo of 3rd and 4th options, IMO.

I'd say 3, but 4 is just helping add to it.

We're seeing some incredible, game-changing talent in such a short period of time.

In terms of hobby prices, I think it's all trickled down from Trout. We've seen how high his stuff can get, so I think people see that and are willing to spend big money on other top players. Partly why base rookies are starting to make a comeback IMO.

I agree with the points on Trout. It is some of 3 and 4 together, prices would not be this high if it were not for the season starting soon.

With that said, I think there is another reason. Last years insane Vintage prices (regardless of the reason they were insane), brought in a lot of attention back to the collecting world. I know there were quite a few of those "feel good" news reports about the high card prices, which brought a lot of new people either into the hobby or back to the hobby. Those people will also want the newer cards as well.

Some of it is also the uneducated new "collectors" who are trying to flip, and think that ever BC Auto of the current hot prospect is going to sell for $2500ish like Trout does. They are driving prices up thinking in a year it will hit ghat high. I giggle every time I think about these people finding their card prices going the route of Todd Van Poppel!

Option 3 + 4 = $$

I think Topps Now is pretty innovative but otherwise Topps and Panini exclusives are a horse apiece.

I saw in another thread the theory that a lot of football collections are moving out of football due to Panini. Outside of the two Cowboy RCs, there really isn't that much to get excited about in football when it comes to young players. I think an influx of buyers in the baseball market is helping. They are looking at baseball and saying "Ok, who should I buy..." and gravitating to Trout, Bryant, Seager, Betts, and other young incredibly gifted stars.

Trout is showing collectors what some of the new guys could bring in so it is a nice investment.

Because new or modest collectors see cards can reach over a grand and most people won't or feel indifferent after buying a Trout Bowman Auto for that much but would love to have one and don't mind dropping $100 on a chance to feel great when a player they bought appreciates to a grand or more

A very good group of young stars. If you think about it, the last time there was an exciting young group it was the early 1990s.

None of the above....although reason #3 does factor into things somewhat.

#1 - shilling is becoming more and more rampant, especially with items sold through consignment houses, thus creating the illusion that prices are rising

#2 - more and more speculators/flippers are entering the market, thus stimulating short-term demand, especially at the high end

#3 - more and more collectors are searching for perfection, thus driving up prices for PSA 10/BGS 9.5 cards

But in reality, only two very small segments of the hobby are booming ("perfect" cards of hot young players & PSA 9/10 vintage superstar RC's).

For 90-95% of the hobby, things are pretty normal.

Full disclosure: I saw that too and it inspired this thread.

It's the Trump Bump. The stock market is up. People feel more secure in their jobs. Collectors are loosening the purse strings.

Topps now brought in, and continues to bring a lot of new people with money to spend. Add in great young stars and the Cubs winning. The topps now product is a "gateway" to other topps products too.

From the marketing perspective

You had the perfect team to win the World Series
You had two perfect individuals win the MVP
You have an amazing Rookie class incoming.

It's a glorious time to sell everything.

^^^^^^^^^This pretty much says it all.

Just a few years ago my primary focus was football first, baseball was a close second, and basketball a distant third.

In terms of football this year, I bought one Dak Prescott rookie, and I was done...(along with some optic blasters at target). I haven't sniffed basketball at all. (except some vintage boxes on ebay, etc..)

I'm all in on baseball...This mix of young players is fantastic.......the game is looking good. It also helps that the big market teams are really doing well right now.

I spent almost nothing on football in 2016. Panini to me is trash and I'll pass on it!
