Default $5000 to invest in signed memorabilia, seeking serious advice

Ok, here is the deal....I have a friend who is a non collector who wants to invest some money ($5000) into signed memorabilia. I have a pretty large collection of signed ted Williams pieces (about 20) but am looking for some advice on how to help him. He is looking to spend about 80% ($4000) on safe stuff and the other 20% ($1000) on more risky people. He is from Maryland but other than a nice Unitas piece, i couldnt think of other athletes from that area that may be a good choice. The people dont have to be from Baltimore teams but he would like some of that if applicable. Obviously I know what companies to deal, with as far as certification but asking the advice of fellow board members on coming up with some options. Thanks in advance and I wish i was the one about to go on this shopping spree.

The term "invest" is vague to me in your wording. Is he looking for growth, or showpieces?

I can't think of any. Has there ever been signed sports memorabilia that has appreciated?

(Outside of signed documents of historical significance.)

I always felt like that was one aspect of sports collecting that kind of always stayed stable or lost money for the most part.

Maryland is loaded. In addition to Johnny U, you have Cal Ripken, Babe, Al Kaline, Jimmie Foxx, Homerun Baker, Michael Phelps, Dominque Dawes, Ray Lewis, Raymond Berry, etc.

If I had 5g to do it.... Jersey/Bat/Ball Auto in an oversized shadowbox frame. And some nice 1/1s and maybe a glove to fill in the gaps. Insert favorite player.

I'm from MD... he should be starting with a nice Ripken piece... probably Brooks Robinson from there. Johnny Unitas would be another investment. If he's a Caps fan, grab some Ovechkin. A nice Terps basketball item would be great... something Gary Williams' signed.

signed memorabilia has sentimental value not much in the way of market value. investing in autos is a terrible idea. id say the best ruth piece $ can buy which wouldnt be all that impressive but could get a faded ball. or other all time great (matty, johnson, cobb types)

tell him to buy cards if he wants to 'invest' in athletes.

if he just wants to have a nice auto collection then go for the fun ones... ali, jordan, brady and players he likes. these living or recently passed guys have tons of autos out there so they wont ever go up in value much but they would display nicely.

If he's strictly investing: Post War signed Hall of Fame Rc cards in all sports. Signed memorbelia (balls, bats, etc) hasn't really exploded in the decade like cards have.

What part of Maryland? Most people in Alleghany and Garrett counties are Pittsburgh fans since they are closer.
