This deal makes sense for the Cubs with where they're at as a team, but I think they overpaid. They could've gotten more for Vogelbach.

If history serves, Vogelbach will fizzle as a Mariner then be traded elsewhere where he becomes an All-Star.

What makes you think they could have gotten more? He wasn't going to go to a NL team so that cut trade partners by half. They have been shopping him for a while with what seemed like not a lot of interest. They got exactly what they needed.

Hard to say that, we don't know what his value was to MLB FO's. 1st base/DH only prospect with questionable power.

I think it's a good get for the Ms, but I also think that's a bad place for him.

I thought the Cubs would've packaged him together with another prospect or two for Miller or Chapman. I guess the Yankees weren't interested.

For champman
Heck, read one person suggest for chapman and Beltran

Read Andrew Miller for him

He's hit wherever he's been, brought the power with him, doesn't strike out as much as minor league power hitters do

I think getting a power lefty under control is a pretty good get for a player who was never going to play for the Cubs.

I love Vogelbach, but if it's a one-for-one (remains to be seen), I think it's perfectly rational for both sides. He wasn't likely to get time in Chicago absent injury, and being limited to 1B/DH hampers his trade value. Montgomery is versatile and has been dominant this year versus lefties, and he's controllable for five years.

This is his first year really showing power over a prolonged period. Has been around a 160 iso which is mediocre for a DH.

I still like this for the Mariners, I just don't think he's that valuable. Safeco is also a terrible fit for him.

I see Triple A; Blackburn is in Double A and the Cubs would be absolutely stupid to part with Blackburn and Vogelbach for anything the Mariners think they can put together

Now if it's Pierce Johnson, that makes sense

Kudos to Seattle. They did well even before Blackburn was announced.

yeah, I mean over the years all of our bigger names have moved up with Walker and Paxton, Sampson is on the DL. In the bigs we have Felix, Iwakuma, Miley, Walker, Paxton, Karns, Montgomery, and LeBlanc

Karns is in the Pen now and Monty was starting. With Walker hurt for a bit, that leaves us with

Felix
Kuma
Miley
Paxton
LeBlanc

He got your a failed SP, reliever who isnt even a closer.

Every teams fans overrate their prospects but Vogelbach was the worst

Cubs got a quality LH RP for a player that would never crack the starting lineup barring any injury to Rizzo and Rizzo only. They are in win now mode. No it isn't as sexy as Miller or Chapman would have been, but Vogelbach wasn't going to be enough for either of them anyway.

Good move for the Cubs.

Mariners prospects all suck and something is going on there to retard a lot of their development

Montero after he got there, Zunino, Franklin before he got traded, Jackson.

Id be worried about the Mariners ruining whatever Vogelbach could become.

It makes sense for both teams but the Mariners are bad juju

This is a really interesting and silly thought. The dude was NEVER going to see Wrigley field for the Cubs. What exactly was keeping his prices up that they could drop by likely playing DH for the Mariners?

The sole reason (ok so two reasons...) is he played for the cubs and had mid power.

Only reason his prices where staying up

It was called Jack Z... Now that he's out we have some hope.

Zunino has had a solid season at Tacoma. DJ has been hot since being moved up to AAA. O'Neill is doing well. It's going to take some time to recover from the Jack Z plague.

Zunino was clearly rushed as well, all Mariner fans know that. He just got the call up today and hit his 3rd HR in his 3rd game. I think Zunino had a lot of learning to do, hopefully his extended time in AAA gave him that. Time will tell

I'm not sure just how much value some people thought Vogelbach had. Obviously the bat is nice, but there's not a ton of trade value in a guy that's going to be stuck at DH. Cubs did well to get a talented left-handed reliever, especially for a guy under team control until 2022. I give the edge to the Mariners for getting Blackburn out of it as well, but it seems like a pretty even swap.

Kind of funny that some thought no way vogelbach only got Montgomery when it actually took Blackburn too

tiger221166
07-20-2016, 07:58 PM
It's not like Blackburn is all that much of a prospect at this point. He's better than the AAA guy, sure, but his stuff never developed like the Cubs hoped. He's a good candidate for the bullpen though, excellent command and his stuff might play up more when just pitching an inning.

This seems like a perfectly reasonable trade for both teams. Mariners definitely could be the big winners if Vogelbach takes to DHing like it seems he could, but Montgomery could fill a lot of roles for the Cubs as well.
