Hello everyone,

I don't want to make this a political post. But with all the politics being woven into the NBA right now and low ratings will this effect basketball prices long term ?

In my business I keep the politics out and try accept everyone's business, but there are folks out there who have really strong beliefs about their political stances.

Thoughts ?

i think the low ratings by and large are due to these games looking like summer league, its almost painful to watch. There will be people who won't watch because of other reasons, but i think it's less likely in basketball than if they started doing this more during football, baseball, especially hockey. basketball fans are usually for this type of movement.

all i know is the only color that matters to me in cards is green...

I’m not trying to be a jerk, but WHO Cares? I don’t want my sports inner woven with politics and wish our politicians would stay out of it as well. You would think they would be focused on the greater problems this country has than getting political with Sports.

Amen!

I don't care what the players do. Just give me the basketball games. I appreciate everything the league and players have done to produce an A+ product.

I don’t think that’s the case. More so that the games are being played during the summer. People have other things they’d rather do then watch tv during the nice weather. Ratings for nearly everything drop in the summer. It’s why networks traditionally don’t release new shows till the fall. I know personally I’ve only watched one day time game in full - and I’m a basketball junkie.

The only way politics will effect cards is:

1) Indirect impact due to economic conditions set by government leaders
2) General clecting public disagreeing w/ their stars social stances

For flipping, I could care less.

For clecting, I like Luka, Giannis, and Patty. Two of those aren't American so that makes me automatically unpatriotic.

Thanks for the feedback, it's interesting cause I know some collectors in Hong Kong who dumped everything Lebron, they don't care about the money but they hate the fact that he stands with their "enemy". I get what they are saying, but I personally keep the politics out of it.

As for the ratings, I think it might be more than seasonal. Just stating the obvious and the games do look like summer league games.

The NBA under Adam Silver has always been supportive of social justice movements this isn’t anything new. I would bet that most people who would have a problem with the NBA BLM signage etc probably weren’t watching anyways and the people who do are probably a small % of fans.

Ratings will pickup once the playoffs start.

Yea, if you're an active basketball fan and you disagree with the political views being expressed by the NBA, what are you going to do, start watching the Euroleague instead? I doubt those people won't be tuning in during the finals and the playoffs

You could argue that politics has effed up postal service and the shipping of cards. I don't think the NBA social actions have had any effect on card prices, because the people who are offended by something weren't watching or buying cards anyway, especially the NBA. As Michael Jordan said, "Republicans buy graded bass rookies, too."

I get what you are saying but maybe they just won't watch basketball ? Maybe they will go watch another sport or do something else ?

It's just in a business such as cards there needs to be legit bids (debatable) but if a certain population get turned off, the long term viability at this level may not be sustained.

NFL was affected cant see how the NBA would be any different. Anytime I turn on ESPN chances are half the content will be social change driven commentary. Some folks just want a escape and some sports entertainment without any politics.

Just stop watching sports all together like I did. I will spend my money on other things. Like playing golf and fishing. To think the politcal talk is not going to effect the NBA market is asanine. Look at the NFL for reference. This will hurt the NBA's income.

I personally dont think bringing attention to inequality in this country is the same as politics.

If you're going to let it bother you than it's going to bother you. I guess I've been too entrenched in the game to even listen to commentary most of the time. Like last night's game, honest question, were the hitting you over the head with it? Do they even still show the kneeling before the game like they were the first couple of games? The only thing that is really noticable is the jerseys, but it doesn't take anything away for me. I'm still enjoying it and last night's game was amazing.

Not necessarily since the game times are different than normal game times. There is no 7-7:30pm pacific games due to the league being on the east coast and not wanting to play a game starting at 10-10:30pm eastern.

Watching sports now, I can definitely say, I appreciate the fans in the stands and making the atmosphere more enjoyable.

THIS. I absolutely love that so called sports fans are offended, upset or whatever by athletes standing up to what’s going on in this country. Put your money where your mouth is and stop watching and don’t let the door hit ya on the way out! Sports ain’t going anywhere, period.

I’m a huge sports fan but before all this, the NBA sat firmly in the 4th/5th spot on my list. Now, second only to college hoops. Not only are they standing up they are putting on a clinic on how to get this pandemic under control. Love it.

I’ve totally crossed to hoops cards too, from baseball. I’m all in!

NBA fans are a completely different demographic to NFL
