View Full Version : 2023 Hobby Goals

Here are mine for 2023

1. Clear out all non player collection cards and sell those to other player/team collectors
2. Have Aaron Kurcz sign the final 6 cards I need to complete my IP collection for his stuff
3. Submit 100+ cards to PSA
4. Continue selling off my Will Clark & Eddie Murray player collections
5. Sort and checklist my Stacey Augmon collection
6. Add at least 20 cards to my Darin Erstad collection. I only need about 125 non-1/1 cards.
7. Add at least 1 Bucky Jacobsen card. I need 6 non-1/1 cards. Want 2005 Topps Black /54.
8. Continue enjoying the hobby on my own terms

How I did for 2022

1. Get all my non-PC items sorted and prepared to sell (FB and COMC). :D
2. Prep a few dozen cards for PSA submission :D
3. Sell off the parts of my Will Clark and Eddie Murray collections that aren't interesting to me anymore :D
4. Open 2022 Topps with my 7 year old son :(
5. Add to my Darin Erstad, Bucky Jacobsen, Stacey Augmon, and Aaron Kurcz collections :D
6. Add another GU jersey, GU bat, other GU item from any players above :D
7. Enjoy the hobby more :D

Didn't get to do any 2022 Topps with my boy. We gave up looking at Target/Wal-Mart etc. Instead, we bought some online sets to break up and some to hold.

I did add a Game Used Rangers jersey for Will Clark. Probably the pickup of the year for me.

2. Get rid of at least half of my things that belong in $1 to $10 boxes.
That's it.

After looking at my credit card statement year in review, I agreed (was told by) the woman I would only buy cards with funds obtained through selling cards in 2023.

I ordered a case of Bowman Chrome to hold me over and I've also got a big PSA order coming back so should be able to start selling that to prep for 2023 releases.

So looks like the top goal of 2023 will be downsizing and selling anything not in the PC. I need to figure out the best way to do this...

1. Go through at least 33% of my monster boxes and pull cards for value boxes for card shows.
2. Inventory my 1980s unopened wax collection.
3. Get several cases and boxes to Steve @bbce to wrap from my 1980s unopened wax collection
4. Set up at a card show and sell my excess 1980s unopened wax and value box cards from my monster boxes.
5. Build the 2023 Heritage Set (1974 is one of my ATF sets) by busting multiple cases of each release (regular, hi-number, minors).
6. Put the above base set from all 3 releases in a binder so I can look at it from time to time.
7. Start my "Talented Fat Men of Baseball" PC

1. I want to reduce down from a couple thousand cards in my collection to around 300-400.
2. Utilize COMC for more sales.
3. Bust MORE wax. I actually haven't busted much the last 5 years. I want to primarily focus on older wax though. The new stuff has been lackluster.
4. Find and purchase the 2018 Bowman Chrome Draft McClanahan Superfractor Auto
5. Go to the National. It has been 4 years since I have been to one and need to go.

Only purchase 7-10 big “PSA4 or better” vintage cards next year while selling almost all of my modern collection. Will be keeping my 90’s Griffey inserts, Messi & Mbappe high end, and a 5-10 other higher end modern cards.

Will be buying 49-56 Jackie’s, 51-55 Willie.

I'm not 100% sure what my card goals will be for next year yet. I passed a big milestone of 10,000 unique Twins that's been on the horizon for awhile, but it's not realistic for me to get to another notable mark of like 15k. I always have some goals for things with my website and other hobby related but not specifically my collection, and those will remain. But for what I actually want to do with cards, I'm not quite sure what the specific goals will be

A lot of it may just be to keep doing what I've been doing - pick up cards I like and not worry too much about anything else. Sometimes just keeping things simple is the way to go, I think. There's a lot of factors out there that look to pull you in so many different ways these days

I'm currently working toward a National goal.

I want to buy a lower grade (psa 1 or 2 (likely 1)) 1933 Goudey Gehrig and a lower grade (targeting psa 2) 1954 Aaron.

I want to get them both at the National. I live 20-30min drive from Rosemont so I know I'm going. Like the idea of getting them there so that I'll always associate those two cards with the 2023 National.

Between now and then, no wax. I don't buy much overall to begin with. But I do like to rip from time to time. None til the National. And no gettable cards. By that I mean, nothing that's not low numbered pc stuff between now and then.

I also have some stretch goals for the national if I stockpile enough cash. I'd love a Goudey Hank Greenberg as well and hopefully some other stuff.

But, my main goal is to get those two cards at the National.

And add any cards to the pc here and there when I can. So long as it doesn't take away from my National plan.

I'm working on a master set from the early 00s and down to 64 cards. Most of these remaining are tough finds - either locked away in PCs or collecting dust in a box of forgotten inserts because the players are more obscure. Ideally I'd like to get under 40 to go by the end of next year, but I'll be happy with under 50 to go.

With the robustness of ticking off cards on that checklist winding down, I have started a new project. I'd like to get an autograph of every pitcher to throw a no-hitter (on-card a must if possible). For a few of the vintage players I'll have to bide my time but I can chisel away at the more recent players.

My 2022 resolutions worked so well, I’m just going to roll them over for 2023:

-rip as little wax as possible
-don’t buy any graded base
-don’t buy any base at all
-only buy cards of players I really like
-consider every card bought a sunk cost and don’t think about “future value”
-buy all the Jazz Chisholm cards in the world!!!!!!

1. Finish a Topps era HOF pitcher run. All 40 with no repeated years and no rookies. Down to Roberts, Paige, Feller, and Bunning.

2. Find a nice low-mid grade Jimmie Foxx + auto. Still drying my eyes over letting a PSA/DNA signed 1929 Kashin get away. A tremendous deal for that lucky buyer.

3. GREATLY REDUCE OR EVEN ELIMINATE RANDOM IMPULSE BUYS (basically anything not above or Kershaw)

4. Appreciate what I already have in my collection

2023 Hobby Goals:

Invite some card collecting neighbors to inaugurate a new deck with drinks and the opening of some sort of 1990s wax box
Go to at least two large card shows.
Get to 90% completion on the 1952 Topps low-number set and 75% overall. Fully complete at least one series in the process.
Pick up at least four 1949 Leaf cards in attractive condition.
Get closer to completing the 1993 Finest Refractor set - Cut the number of missing cards (8) in half.
Get at least one card closer to completing the 1991 Donruss Elite set.
Add another one of the 2018 Topps Archives Sandlot autographs.
Set a new annual record for miles traveled by my wallet card.

3. Keep up the hobby, passion, and pastime that gets me up every morning. But keep it affordable as funds are not what they used to be.

2. Keep trying smart, creative ways to enjoy the 3 player collections I have left. I would prefer to keep them all and add continually but money cannot be wasted. My parents promised to keep my PCs long after I'm deceased as my only wish.

1. Liquidate what's still sitting around our house. Still have comics, more misc. hockey cards, etc. Accomplished a huge chunk this year but not quite done. Would prefer to keep being upright to help my father liquidate to avoid unnecessary burden. For all the sharing I do about my Cystic Fibrosis, my dad has CIPD on top of true back problems (major surgery in the early 90s with arthritis episodes ever since), and my mother is slowly showing signs of memory loss but undiagnosed. We get by for now but I need to stick around long enough to at least clear the extra sports card/comics for money. My dad can't focus like he used to so it's a dual effort to track sales and ship timely.

We'll see 2023.

1) Resist wax as much as possible. The point isn't to try to rip nothing - ripping occupies a particular place in the hobby and fills a particular need. But trying to keep it limited. For retail, I'll generally let myself buy one of pretty much any product that interests me. For baseball, one hobby/jumbo box of traditional hobby type sets if I'm interested, but staying away from the single pack products. But also...

2) Staying away from Bowman and the prospect chase. Bowman products are the single most money torchingest thing that we can do as baseball collectors. I love houdini and the 100 casers, but every time I've done it, it's been a money flamethrower. With the diluted checklists and the already present reality that almost all of the players will never be hobby relevant after call up...I need to fully resist this temptation to save money for other things.

3) Continue focusing on PC projects. chris_ac was my sensei on this. Buy low #'ed cards for the players I collect, and generally avoid buying other things. Even for my Astros PC, I'm going to be shifting away from buying more Yordan cards by and large in favor of just concentrating on Altuve and Bregman, and to this point I've avoided the Jeremy Pena chase.

So for right now, it's Altuve/Bregman (and some Astros pitchers since they're cheap), Heiskanen/Stars (slow burn on adds here now, I have most of the big Heiskanen RCs that aren't /10 or less), and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Beyond that, no singles that aren't effectively value box level.

Lots of great goals in here!

For me it’s going back to my pre-2020 roots. I got back into the hobby in 2017. My focus at that time when things were affordable was graded Tom brady, mike trout, key early Jordan cards, key vintage. I was actively flipping into bigger cards. The ideal blue chip collection in my eyes is 20 cards or less.

The craziness of 2020 and 2021 shifted my focus. I flipped and traded and am amazed at what I was able to do with overall very little $ into the hobby. Stopped buying graded cards completely. It was a time and a place that will likely not happen again and if it does it’ll be many years. Tripling your $ selling a card you bought just a week or two before the flip.

In the past few months I have been actively tracking and observing some noticeable trends. Only watching at this stage. I’m convinced the card hobby has a way to go before reaching bottom.

I am quite active in the comic book market and have noticed a shift in the past let’s say 3 months. Weaker auction offerings, sales still trending down. What this is doing is tightening up the supply. The eBay golden age market is light. People are holding. I believe by summer 2023 it will be quite difficult to find gold and silver mega keys in the marketplace. In other words the observable bottom is in sight.

Key comics are much more rare and desirable in pop culture than key sports cards so there will be a lag that I think will lead into 2024 for cards. In the sports card hobby vintage will be the first area where this behavior will start to show.

For a collector like me (portfolio builder) it’s fun time to be strategic and patient. The bottom will come. If I had a prediction to make it’ll be between Q4 2023 and Q2 2024.

So my goal is to track and relearn the true key ‘investment’ quality card markets. Feel out the bottom and get more active toward the end of this year. Graded top 2% of the hobby type cards.

I have 12 of the 64 postseaon cards but the others are difficult to find (I hope I can add more of them next year but if no I am okay with it and if I finish it I will be ecstatic).

I have 4 of the teams from that set and plan to buy 10 more in the next few months.

2. Buy the 1991 ProCards #1316 Brian Steiner (my sealed team set did not have this card in it).

3. Buy the 1994 ProCards #2257 Hickory Crawdads checklist card (I bought two sealed sets and both sets had the blank card error).

4. Move my cards from boxes to binders.

5. Buy more game used cards of players on forgotten teams ( I already have a teal striped jersey of Mike Piazza when he was a Marlin and a piece of black jersey from 1999 of Wade Boggs when he was a Devil Ray. My next card will be a bat card of Sammy Sosa when he was an Orioles.

Mine:

1. Finish the regular season part of the 2008 Upper Deck Documentary set (which is cards 1-4890).

6. Buy 2 autograph cards of Dale Murphy as a Rockie.

I am just finding out now that Dale Murphy played for the Rockies…

1. Rip far less wax & instead strategically add to sealed stash.
2. Cut annual card spending by at least half.
3. 80/20 breakdown of hobby vs retail wax box buys.
4. Remember how bad Topps QC has become to resist ripping.
5. Focus on core interest with Bowman & Prospecting, including buying complete paper/chrome prospect sets, color and autos of PC teams and players.
4. Discontinue collecting NFL, other than a handful of singles.

I've solidified my plans a bit more. I'm going to focus on one decent purchase a week this year. I've made a list of 40 cards I plan on getting and 12 wax products (most of the time 1 box but some might be more) for the requisite 52. Some singles on my list are as cheap as $10 with the most expensive topping out at $300 (1975 Yount PSA 8). They are all cards that I want though. I think this will cut down on some of the impulse buying, but I enjoy bargain hunting so will use this year as a test run to see if I enjoy the hobby more or less with a plan of attack for the year. I'm also letting myself work on three sets (2022 Holiday Metallic, 2019 Holiday Variations (Sp, SSP, and SSSP) and Star Wars Sapphire. Here's my list for good measure. Some of the boxes on my list are locks as they are every year purchases, but a few might change based on specs when released. Edit to add: be sure to run 10 eBay auctions a week.

Stretch goal: get a table at a card show

12-30-2022, 05:08 PM
For 2023, I am setting a modest goal to pick up about 52 cards over the year, one per week.

I want to spend more time reading sports books, comics and organize what I already own. Have a pile of books and comics yet to be opened and cards waiting to be sorted. My goal is to spend just 25% of my hobby time browsing, searching, buying and selling and 75% time reading and organzing.

Collecting
1. Paul O'Neill -- add 25 cards (excluding Tek)
2. Yankees Topps/Heritage -- add 10 vintage, 10 SSPs (pre-2017)
3. Autographs/RCs -- add/upgrade 5 cards
4. Non-Sports -- add 2 autos/sketches or comic books

Organizing
1. Complete my office, shelves, and displays.
2. Continue to sell/trade to fund purchases.
3. Streamline my spreadsheet/site.
4. Update searches for vintage needs.

2023 goals:

1. Add more "free" sealed wax to the sealed wax collection (ideally, a 2003-04 and a 2009-10 BKB hobby product too)
2. Pick up 1-2 "free" mid-end PC rookie cards ($2-$6k range)
3. Rip no more than $6k worth of hobby/retail wax
4. Avoid buying garbage products (e.g., BB21, 2022 TC, 2022 TCU) at inflated prices
5. Set up at a local card show

Rememberthepast’s 2023 Goals

In no particular order;

1. Get organized
- clean up my sport card desk area and put cards & supplies in their respective areas
- create a spreadsheet for my collection
- update my Flickr account
- clean out my Blowout inbox

2. List & sell a majority of my commons and unnecessary cards

3. Complete two of 13 Tarik Skubal PC rainbows currently in progress

4. Sort two cases of 2021 Bowman Draft paper I’ve had for a year

5. Buy my first case of cards ever and it’ll be Allen & Ginter (love this product)

6. Buy 5 unripped Detroit Tigers RIP cards for the PC

7. Send in designated cards for grading

8. Make a contribution to the Blowout community

9. Assist someone in the Detroit area with their hobby needs, i.e. sorting, consignment, help at a show, etc.

10. Read a total of 5 books on the game of baseball and/or historical hobby (I might need help from Mouschi to figure out some books that discuss pre 1900 cards)

2. Open wax but less of it, be more selective

5. Focus on higher end stuff

Frankly just need to let things go. I think I've been around this hobby enough to know how few cards actually catch fire. I mainly prospect and dabble with Heritage. This was the year I finally quit Topps Chrome of all varieties. Ohtani was fun to sell couple of years ago but I just don't see another unicorn like that coming into baseball anytime soon.

I swore off breaks and converted those purchases for singles prospect autos I had a hunch on. I paid $30 for a Jeremy Pena /250 auto and sold it for around $280. I pat myself on the back for letting that go, in years past I would have held way too long and would have wildly missed the peak value window.

Did the same with Oscar Gonzalez paid maybe $20 for a /250 auto and sold for about $130. Should have sold Oscar Cabrera when the going was good.

Also go by the maxim "prospects will break your heart". Do not fall in love with prospects and be ready to move, that card ain't gonna do what you want it to do and be happy with selling at or near peak value.

I decided to mainly focus on Bowman and limit myself to no more than three box purchases for. I still can't afford it and I'm still losing money on boxes. I need to sell more to soften these purchases.

The number of posts saying to sell more is staggering, but I suppose with new wax prices you have to feed the habit by selling off unwanted cards unless you’re independently wealthy or have a trust fund.

My goal is to kick the buy at release wax habit all together in 2023, I love ripping wax, but I’d always get a pit in my stomach opening a $250-$300 Jumbo Bowman box and pull $100 worth of cards, I can’t fathom those same jumbos being $500 with worse QC and water downed auto checklists. Singles only, and if a product that looks promising drops to realistic levels maybe step in then, maybe.

2. Spend at least 30 minutes of each day debating random strangers on Blowout forums on the subject of whether or not Bobby Witt, Jr. will have an HOF-level career.

3. Put most of my retirement savings into 1st Bowman chrome autos of players who have never had a single at bat or thrown a single pitch in the show and then sell the same for pennies on the dollar after they are called up and revealed to be utility guys and AAAA-level relievers.

So far so good on my wish list. I haven’t bought any hobby boxes and just pulled the trigger on about three blasters so far. It helps that I hate the look of series one and Heritage this year. I might be tempted for A&G but if there’s an awesome auto associated with it this year, I’ll likely get that instead.

So far I have a nice collection of current Mets autographs. I’m much happier not having all these extra cards boxed up. The cool stuff got put in binders and I’m enjoying that presentation.

7. Add at least 1 Bucky Jacobsen card. I need 6 non-1/1 cards. Want 2005 Topps Black /54.

Geez, could not wait for bumping till July 1 when halfway is more complete lol

3 and 2 are always in focus. 1 is still work in progress but by my personal standards, I have no sports cards left to sell. Comics need to be moved next but definitely more tedious a process to take pics and list properly and find buyers. Dragging feet mostly. Family is still stable but somewhat living week to week. When I do purchase cards, it's the what's available at this moment not what product may come out next month that I may want. It goes inline with budgetary restraints. Such is life but so far not leaving my hobby life yet.

Definitely watching sports when I can. Even watched games for players I don't normally root for but just to enjoy the little things. Breathing and seeing is valued in my house and in my mind more than most.

Update - failed miserably at avoiding wax, bought some Bowman blasters, 2022 Lite Bowman Draft, Sapphire (Bowman & RotJ), and entered into 2 breaks (dumb dumb dumb) but some how broke even to up a little. I have sold some stuff, organized a few low #’d complete sets so I know what I’m missing and specifically target those cards. Bought a few nice binders w/slip covers so I can have them in the bookcase, got some frames/cards hung up in the office, holding off doing more till I get rid of the old couch and get a new desk. I’m happy with my progress on everything but not buying wax, but I am avoiding wax other than Bowman, and I am staying away from Hobby boxes, so 1 step at a time.

Feels good, gotta do this with Casey Schmidt and Strand and just move on and accept the card will sell for whatever the market wants.

You just have to trust your gut. Now with the money made on a good month of card sales, I dumped the a chunk of sales right back into Heritage Boxes which I immediately regretted.

I had posted my eventual goals in my 2023 pickups thread. Checking in with myself:

1. Keep doing what I've been doing

I found it a little difficult to come up with new tangible goals for myself this year, and in thinking through why that is, I realized it's because I'm pretty content with how I collected in 2022. The shortest way I can sum up how I collect is simply collecting what I like, and not worrying about much other than that. There are so many distractions, noise, and drama in the hobby today, and voices telling you what you should/shouldn't do, what products or players are good or bad, and so on. And some of that is helpful to hear. But for me, the true essence of the hobby should always just be picking up cards you like. Simple as that. That takes several forms for me, and of course the focuses can change periodically, but at the end of the day, if you just collect what you like and don't worry about what you "should" do, what others are doing, and especially not if you can make some money or not, that's a formula to have a really good time with the hobby. So all that said, I think I did a good job about collecting how I wanted to in 2022, and I pretty much just want to keep that going this year.

So far, so good! It's been a busy year that hasn't allowed for too much over-thinking, and I definitely have been continuing to just pick up what I like. That's led me a few different ways, namely knocking out the last few bigger vintage Twins rookies I didn't have yet, continuing to work on some current day Twins rookie runs, and a few other ventures. It's been enjoyable, and that's the main goal

2. Complete version 2.0 of my website

This goal has been a work in progress for a few years now. V1.0 of my site has been done for several years too, and it's great, but I've been working on some enhancements that will take it to the next level. V2.0 basically entails cataloging all Twins cards and entering them into my database up front (before getting a copy of each card). This is a massive undertaking to inventory the entire history of Twins cards 1961-present, but it makes everything else so smooth. V1.0 does not have cards preloaded, as I am entering in cards as I acquire them. Switching to the preloaded V2.0 allows for easier adding of cards when I get something new, along with much better and more consistent want lists. I currently have all Twins lists typed up from 1961-2022, and I've been working through auditing each checklist and loading the final version to my site. That piece is done from 1961-1970. It's a long, long process, but the payoff will be worth it.

Once that is complete, I will have a few more admin functions to create/modify that bubble up while working through that process, and then I'll need to convert all of my PC data from V1.0 form to V2.0 form. That will take some time, but shouldn't be too difficult. And once I'm done with that, then all I need to do is stay up to date with inventorying new releases as they come out over time. My website has been a labor of love for a long time now, and polishing up the next major iteration of the site continues to be a top long term goal for myself.

This one isn't happening :p Combo of busy year and a laptop dying have ruined chances of this happening. But progress continues to be made, however slowly it is, and I'm hoping to make some huge strides on this one during a few weeks off this fall

3. Bump up complete Twins sets on the priority list

This is prompted by buying a few Twins complete sets from some recent products in 2022. As I open very minimal wax these days, I'm not getting many single base cards in anymore, and it's a little annoying to pay shipping costs for individual base cards. I realized there are plenty of sellers out there that put together team sets for just a few bucks. I really enjoyed getting a few base sets (i.e. flagship, update, GQ) checked off in one swoop from a seller that had each listed for just a couple bucks, and it was a good cost effective way to bang out some easy Twins wants. This year, I'd like to periodically do the same

The other component of this is prioritizing my 1960s Twins Topps sets a little bit higher, too. The vintage sets are really cool, but I've noticed I tend to put them on the back burner in exchange for modern stuff of the guys I grew up watching and are currently active today. Makes complete sense and I'm not upset about that, but I would like to make more of an effort on filling out my vintage Twins sets too. I realized there is really only one bigger card in that Twins base Topps project (Carew RC), there will be a number of $10-40 cards in there as well, but it shouldn't be as expensive or difficult as I may have unconsciously been thinking it may be. Hoping that making this a visible goal for myself here in this thread will help keep the Twins from the 60s Topps sets on my mind and a little more of an active focus in 2023!

Haven't focused on this one too much yet, but largely as I've been wanting to get farther into 2023 to hope to find some sellers that I can knock out multiple new 2023 team sets at once with. I do still plan on picking up some complete sets of flagship, Heritage, Chrome, etc in one shot eventually. I haven't made too much progress on my vintage sets yet, aside for knocking out the big rookies I referenced - which I suppose is absolutely progress, even if only a few cards! That's another one where I'm hoping to knock out some needs in bunches - maybe I can find a good LCS to do this at

4. Think about what my long term goals are

As I stated above, I am pretty content in the hobby right now. But at the same time, I find myself thinking a fair amount about what I actually want to get out of this long term. This is one of the reasons why I'll be putting some brain dumps of my thoughts on different things over time, as there are a lot of topics within this idea that I'm sure I'll be thinking through, and it'll be helpful to spell them out and share with the public. I have a few ideas of things that would be really cool to do in/for the hobby long term - One thing that I'd really like to do is become a well known resource for other Twins collectors looking for information and such on various Twins cards. My website goes hand in hand with that and I'd love to get it to a point where the Twins checklists and set information is publicly available beyond just for my use behind the scenes. Elsewhere, I have an idea for a collecting project that I don't think has ever been done before, and potentially could open up an avenue to writing a book about it one day if that ends up being a route I want to take. I have a couple of cool ideas, but I do still find myself thinking from time to time stuff like "why do I actually enjoy this stuff?", or "what's the point of all this?", or "what are my actual goals?". All of those are big questions that won't be answered in the short term, but I think it's great to actively engage with those types of things and be proactive about making sure your version of the hobby continues to be what you'd like it to be, and I'm hoping I can continue to find more clarity on all of that as I move forward

Tbh haven't thought a whole lot about this one lately, but I'm also completely ok with that. I've been having fun and that's the main goal

How is the Eloy treating you :)

I'm still waiting for Eloy to get hot before his next injury. Unfortunately I'm sitting on a pretty large stash (eg, 8 gold flagship).

I was able to unload some big cards of his last year when he had back-to-back 2 homer games. Sold an 2019 Orange Sapphire I bought for $500 raw for $1000 (graded as PSA 10), a chrome x-fractor for $300.

That will ease the pain somewhat when I finally rip the band-aid off and consign with Josh (PCsportscards).

I had only a handful of Tatis and sold those with Gleyber for a minor loss.

1. Finish a Topps era HOF pitcher run. All 40 with no repeated years and no rookies. Down to Roberts, Paige, Feller, and Bunning.

This 2 year project comes down to Satchel now. Holding out for a sharp 1 (they do exist!). Had a blast with this and look forward to adding new inductees down the road.

2. Find a nice low-mid grade Jimmie Foxx + auto. Still drying my eyes over letting a PSA/DNA signed 1929 Kashin get away. A tremendous deal for that lucky buyer.

Landed a 1931 W517 last month. Expected condition for a 92 year old card...but it's Jimmie Foxx! Sitting with SGC right now. Expect a 2, hope for a 3. A 4 would be a thrill. Awesome earlier card of him in a catching pose. Eyes mostly dry over that signed '29 Kashin. Still on the lookout for a signature.

3. GREATLY REDUCE OR EVEN ELIMINATE RANDOM IMPULSE BUYS (basically anything not above or Kershaw)

Absolute fail. Still caving in to cool looking but utterly random cards/players. Cannot justify the end of my Topps pitcher project to justify this. Help.

4. Appreciate what I already have in my collection

Absolute success. Still loads of joy to be had, but must work on #3 and come up with a new focus heading into '24.

Here's my self-check in.

Add a '54 Williams to my collection.

I accomplished my goal! I also accomplished a secondary goal: getting a high eye-appeal 1958 Mantle/Aaron card.

Bumping this for closure.

Did anyone else accomplish their goals?
I gladly bought very little wax to bust this year. The few I did were Allen and Ginter and they treated me very well.

How did everyone else hold up?

3. Still tickin'

2. Absolutely

1. Moving on to phase 3 next year. Still consolidating but will be smaller project overall. Family is still holding but getting more weary each month. Trying a bit of nostalgia this Xmas.

This year overall has been great.

- Deciding to focus on iconic cards and singles has been a huge W for me.
- Spent a lot less on wax (thanks Fanatics)
- Moved a lot of my collection that I didn't actually care for ones that I do.

Good year in the hobby for me.

1) Thoroughly enjoyed Mr Shohei Ohtani continue to gain epic baseball and hobby accolades.

2) Bought 2 large collections, picking through and selling at a profit has brought lots of joy this year.

3) Discovered the NPB due to Black Friday sales, looking forward to diving in deeper to the Japanese baseball phenomenon.

Overall, I think I did pretty good on my goals.

https://clark22murray33.com/images/erstad-98-diffractor-mail-day-011224.jpg

One of my best mail days in recent memory! 48 Darin Erstad 1998 Tek Diffractors and a few base cards I needed for my second set.

This puts my progress at:

46/89 Diffractors (pattern 49 doesn't exist.)
19 Diffractor doubles
2 Diffractor triples
89/90 Base set #1
88/90 Base set #2

This buy is from Matthew Ryan (thank you!) and originates from the legendary Richard Roth collection. I'm certain I was the original underbidder in a majority of these that were sold to Richard via eBay over the years.

It's a cool full circle moment for my Darin Erstad collection. Before this buy, I'd have pegged a +50% completion on the Diffractor player run as close to zero as one can get. I'm currently at 51.68% completed.

If you see any rare Erstad stuff, let me know. Thank you!

Complete a PSA registry set
Sell my sh*t.

My PSA set isn't even on the registry yet so that doesn't count. I have a hard time selling my stuff. Haha. 2023 FAIL!

Quality over quantity.

Buy Vlads that I want for my PC

Sell cards I don't want and turn them into vintage Super Powers figures (just getting into those and man, what a throwback).

Check, check and check.
