This makes me sad. As someone that likes manga and anime, it was one of the cooler insert designs from Panini recently imo, but basketball doesn't get it :(

I also am somewhat perplexed in general by Prizm not having any good inserts. For a flagship product it just seems bizarre. I guess with so many releases they have to spread around the good inserts into the worse sets to make them relevant.

The Champion Signatures is a good idea though, a lot of people like photos of their favorite players with the trophy.

Release dates for previous Prizm releases were:

2018/19 = Nov 21, 2018.
2019/20 = Dec 4, 2019.
2020/21 = March 31, 2021.
2021/22 = July 8, 2022.
2022/23 = April 12, 2023.

So still a way to go to get back to pre-pandemic schedule.

Prizm Basketball Draft had a manga insert.

Prizm had solid inserts last year -- Fearless, Fireworks, Prizmatic. The designs are crummy this year.

Well the bums are pricing most 22-23 at least 1.5x what 21-22 is currently selling at. Over under on 22-23 Prizm hobby presale is $1500 a box. Odds of coming out ahead around 3% per box. Odds of taking at least a $1000 loss over 80%. But unlike 2022 football you can actually hit cards worth 5 or even 6 figures. Just the odds are very slim.

Yeah, I skipped all 2022 football. Zero interest given the rookie class. I at least like the 22-23 BKB rookie class but, as always, price matters. Like to pick some up for the sealed collection but we'll see.

Even the big lottery odds are better. The payout just goes to one person so any individual persons odds are minuscule but if you think about the payout % the lottery pays out way higher than a $1500 box of prizm.

I think I actually like the design. I don't see a base version so that may end up being ugly. Some of the colors look cool.

IMO there is not much else they can do chrome products are going to look similar.

I would never pay for a hobby box and retail is $30 for a bunch of base cards I don't collect so I won't be ripping any.

If KD has an actual action shot I will get some color for my KD binder.

I buy certain releases in pretty much all sports and I also do TCGs. I won't do any of the super high-end stuff in basketball but I still think Prizm is a key release. Curious to hear what you think is a better play in basketball if you're talking about 22/23 specifically.

To make it even better, players under the age of 20 who averaged 20 PPG as a rookie since 2000:

Lebron, KD, Luka, Carmelo, Paolo.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan. I think the most impressive aspect of his game is his already-mature frame and ability to switch off point forward with his handles.

I was more alluding to the fact his numbers aren't really taking the NBA world by storm, and he's gotten very little 'viral' coverage this year in comparison to some other top picks in the past.

20ppg is excellent as a 19 year old. But we also have to remember Orlando gave him the keys to the car since day 1. He's going to be averaging nearly 16 shot attempts per game and his usage rate tips in at 27.5. So it's obvious the Magic had no qualms giving him as much exposure as possible.

He needs to throttle back the perimeter shooting and leverage his body inside, as he's now the worst 3 point shooter of all qualifying players this season.

The other thing to consider is that there's been a significant shift towards Hobby in prices.

I was looking at that 19-20 Prizm thread. Comparing to 21-22 prices, blasters were around the same, cello boxes are a third or so less and retail boxes are half the price. Meanwhile, Hobby boxes are twice as much.

Unless Panini severely cuts their retail production, and keeping similar ratios, you'll need to find Blasters are 15 bucks and Cellos at 5 to see Hobby boxes at 400.

I get it's kinda corny, but with a 90 card checklist and some really low numbered parallels your chance of pulling a decent card are pretty good.

Waiting for my 2 boosters but my game is here already. A little complex but seems like fun to play.

My 2 packs had each a Black Icons parallel and a PS insert/variation. My variations were LeBron and Ja and my parallels were Dejounte Murray and LeBron.

One thing I did notice is that the variation and parallel had different numbers in the back.

So I just opened 4 of the booster boxes and the 2 Prizms per box is not correct. They count the Limited Edition base as a non-base.

So out of my 4 I got 3 Prizm, one of which being a Lavine Red Dice (on my eBay) which I think is an SSP.

Opened 8 boosters, with 4 more on the way today, and these are really fun! Way more fun than any regular Prizm retail.

Oddly didn't get a single base Paolo RC, and only hit one Chet. While I've gotten up to 4 copies of a few other rookies.

Most excited to hit the Keegan Murray RC Pink #/149, Curry Teal Wave (non-numbered) and the Jokic Boardwalk Blue Tiger Stripe (have yet to see another similar prizm on eBay, so might be very short print).

Have you all seen cardboard connection's page for this monopoly prizm? This is nuts. So let's see here - 30 new Prizm parallels coming only from these monopoly "booster"/"blaster" boxes - which you might get ~3 or 4 Parallels per box out of the 6 packs?

The whole thing is kind of interesting as a completely different subset of this year's Prizm with 90 cards and the chance of pulling color blasts as well (23 of them!). I'm sometimes into crazy parallels as I went for and succeeded completing the rainbow from this past year's Panini VIP packs for Shaq. I thought it was kind of crazy going after that 16 card rainbow - this takes it all to another level.

With the amount of parallels despite the 90 card checklist I can only assume they printed the absolute maximum insane amount they could possibly make. I can't imagine target sold out of these and them being a one-time stocking of it. Thoughts?

I think for now I’m going to sit on the sidelines for a few months - see how things look then. There’re a lot of negatives being tossed around here on this product- a concerning amount …. I already have my plate full of full of risk with rookie prospecting - add to that a board game variation release and that risk gets crazy high - even for me!

I don't care that much about hitting numbered cards as I think the overall format of blasters (6 parallels - 300 cards set) is still better than the boosters once you include jerseys and autos.

But yeah, given how crazy prices are for the parallels, boosters seems like a better deal. For now.

watched a few mega breaks online. Not much to speak of. A whole slew of .50 red sparkle veteran cards mixed with a few veteran silvers. For the first time, I am really not that tempted to go out and seek prizm. I have like 5-7 rookies that I want to pick up, a couple of them will go cheap. We shall see how next few season go, but this rookie crop doesn't feel like it has a lot of star power. As always, a few of the top five guys will disappear and there will be at least one lower level guy who busts out.

I was somewhat bummed out reading this thread this week, with everyone pooping on Mega’s. Kind of made myself 2nd guess the decision, as $60 seemed like a lot. I think most people that are buying them are buying speculatively to be honest. Most people that have a fanatics rep (ok maybe not most but a lot) are resellers. At $50 people hoping to flip with them offering 20 boxes which they are saying is a sealed case.

How are these selling at all? What’s the chase? A top 5% box (green or red or pink ice Banchero) doesn’t even get your money back. These are sort of tough even at $40. Prices need to get back to pre-COVID level ASAP.
The sooner you accept that prices aren’t going back to 2019, the sooner you will be able to move on. You have to be ripping these for fun, not profit.

What seems odd to me is that the current market prices for 21-22 prizm retail are quite a bit lower than those of 22-23. At first I thought, “well the hobby has soured on the 21-22 draft class”. And while that may be true, I also noticed there are far fewer listings for 22-23 retail blasters and megas on eBay AND they seems to have gotten rid of cellos and hangers for 22-23. So I am wondering if the print run for 22-23 is lower or perhaps they were just entirely out of control for 21-22

If economics rules, then the print runs were halved, which is still 3x 2017.

My take on it is that they just haven't gotten around to putting it on clearance yet, while 21-22 cellos are half off at a bunch of Wal-Marts. I imagine that a bunch of 22-23 stuff will be on clearance soon, particularly Prizm and Mosaic.
