I've been collecting, buying, and selling cards since I was about 10 years old. My dad and I would go every weekend growing up to the Tri-County Flea Market where I'd spend my weekly allowance. Over the years the hobby has been very kind to me. I've been lucky enough to pull some pretty big cards both as a kid and as an adult. I've introduced this hobby to friends, roommates, and family and have always been happy to share the passion I have. I even ran a few small group breaks out of my college dorm room (Houdini has shared that I was the first break he ever joined). While they were shotty and probably a bit disorganized, it was a thrill to do.
As time went along, and as I've grown into a 30-something year old adult, sports cards have helped me pay for some big life events (engagement ring, wedding, etc.) My wife and I are now expecting our first child this coming December. With the hobby rapidly changing, as well as life, I've spent the last few months selling off some of my higher end collection items in anticipation of the birth of our son.
One of the things I've been unloading are some "investment" sealed boxes I've been sitting on. Right before the rise of the card market (and with an eBay coupon) I purchased a sealed box of 2015-16 Upper Deck O-Pee-Chee Platinum. I've come close a few times to selling this box for cash but ultimately never pulled the trigger.
The other day my wife was out shopping with my mother-in-law for baby items as I was home taking inventory of the last of the more expensive things I have. With some very strong recent sales, and with the understanding that this hobby is getting quite expensive, I decided to open this box knowing that this is likely the last wax I'll be opening for a very long time.
I pulled what is likely the single most valuable card I've pulled.
I'm so grateful for what this hobby has brought to my life. This was truly a special moment for me. This card is likely heading to PSA with the intention to sell and starting a college fund for my first child.
