heart HIT OF A LIFETIME (with a quick story) 2015-16 O-Pee-Chee Platinum Box

I've been collecting, buying, and selling cards since I was about 10 years old. My dad and I would go every weekend growing up to the Tri-County Flea Market where I'd spend my weekly allowance. Over the years the hobby has been very kind to me. I've been lucky enough to pull some pretty big cards both as a kid and as an adult. I've introduced this hobby to friends, roommates, and family and have always been happy to share the passion I have. I even ran a few small group breaks out of my college dorm room (Houdini has shared that I was the first break he ever joined). While they were shotty and probably a bit disorganized, it was a thrill to do.

As time went along, and as I've grown into a 30-something year old adult, sports cards have helped me pay for some big life events (engagement ring, wedding, etc.) My wife and I are now expecting our first child this coming December. With the hobby rapidly changing, as well as life, I've spent the last few months selling off some of my higher end collection items in anticipation of the birth of our son.

One of the things I've been unloading are some "investment" sealed boxes I've been sitting on. Right before the rise of the card market (and with an eBay coupon) I purchased a sealed box of 2015-16 Upper Deck O-Pee-Chee Platinum. I've come close a few times to selling this box for cash but ultimately never pulled the trigger.

The other day my wife was out shopping with my mother-in-law for baby items as I was home taking inventory of the last of the more expensive things I have. With some very strong recent sales, and with the understanding that this hobby is getting quite expensive, I decided to open this box knowing that this is likely the last wax I'll be opening for a very long time.

I pulled what is likely the single most valuable card I've pulled.

I'm so grateful for what this hobby has brought to my life. This was truly a special moment for me. This card is likely heading to PSA with the intention to sell and starting a college fund for my first child.

What was your reaction when pulled? I’d have been running around my house.

Such a beautiful card, congrats on the pull.

Unreal. What’s the value in PSA10? Crazy to have that in a box for seven years. Congrats!

Great card.
If edges, surface and corners are all strong I think it tops out as a PSA 9 due to centering.

I agree with your assessment. Card looks clean all around. Will try to update when the card is back from grading. Hope they don't ding it because of the weird foil "break" in the middle of the card - sort of looks like the "traxx/mojo" parallel foil roll ran mid card.

Thanks for all the kind words everybody!

Beautiful card, but is that a print line going through the signature of the card. I know PSA don’t always take off for them, but I would imagine the card will not likely get more than an 8 with it.

For us folks who know nothing about the hockey card market, what’s the value of this card?

With that big black line through the middle, I would say it tops out as an 8

It’s not a perfect analogy but opc platinum is kind of our Topps chrome I guess .

Mid tier product with nice on card autos and chrome stock with classic opc design, it’s pretty popular

I've seen some 9's with that same refractor line, but generally you're looking at an 8. 10 is going to be all but impossible unless the grader doesn't know what they're doing, in which case you're in luck.

Sick pull.

Update on this:

Card came back a PSA 8. I'm a touch disappointed, but I guess PSA saw the weird foil break as an issue. Regardless still riding the high from this incredible pull. I consider myself retired from ripping wax.

Going to take some time to decide if I'll be selling. Thanks again everyone for the kind words!

Show the back or list what the number is before you crack and try and sell raw due to the 8 lol
