View Full Version : 2024 Star Wars Masterwork

Looks like this is releasing April 16th.
Anyone grab a pre-order?
Looks pretty standard, with what it sells for on the secondary market their formula seems to work pretty well. Breakers will eat it up no doubt.

I used to budget for at least a case of Masterwork but I am getting sick of getting cards where half the set are characters I care and know almost nothing about.
Though I do have to say I like the base design.

Product was ok when it was 200 a box from 2012-2020
Could not imagine opening a box for 600
Majority of boxes will be 500 dollar lose

Price go up, quality go down, sounds like every other product since COVID. Sucks, I went nuts with this product during the first release. Probably opened two cases worth since nobody at my LCS cared about non-sports or Star Wars.

How much were those boxes that first year? 100 or 120'ish? I do remember the scoffing by people about it being WAY too much, lol. Now, you've got to burn $3k for a box that might yield quality even close to that first Masterwork release.

I know 11 years is a long time but I thought I would offer up a flashback to the original (aka…The good old days)

2 years later (2016 release) the case cost was 1300.00 with a $35 spot price in Ian’s breaks.

I remember when this first came out and buying multiple cases and getting a lot back in resale value.
Now this task is impossible. I have not bought any wax in about 3 years and can't see it happening anytime soon.

The biggest difference at the beginning was the actual masterworks
Lots of great sketches per case.
Now quality is less and quantity is less for sketches
You get stamps and relics
600 is an insult. But breakers will break it

I got them for $175 a box since the store wanted them gone. I remember buying tons of Fleer Retro Marvel, Marvel Premier, Masterworks, and other non-sports for close to store cost because the owner ordered them so he could get other products, and I was the only non-sports collector that came in.

I remember 2012 Marvel Premier didn't even sell out at distribution by the time it was outside their UD contract limitations or they had marked it WAY down, however it worked back then... and I got a case at cost. Good times for sure.

Not just Premier...ALOT of the supposed high end didnt sell out....at a time where production run in general was also alot lower (not Premier though I guess)
2016 Marvel Gems was at one stage on clearance for $70 or so a box....

Source on this or joking? The last 2 MW were $279. I don't think that the Big 3 would even presale at that kind of hike.
I'm thinking $319 on Topps and 42 available to buy on release day.

The signers list will look great just like star wars chrome black. Topps has figured out if you just add a few of each big name signers and thousands of the fodder people will buy. Leaf so much better providing autograph amounts on their checklists.

Yeah, I'm no fan. Done with them for the most part. Anyone who falls for presale on Big 3 is some kind of insane.
Topps will def not have onsale with anything near $600 so it's just a matter if the plebes (non breakers) get a shot at some direct this time.

I have a Premier Gold account that gets me access to preorders before the general public. If I'm not logged into my account, it just lists as coming soon. When I log into my account, it gives me a preorder price. My preorder price is $586 as I get a small discount. Regular price will be $599.

What's more interesting is I could have also ordered a case yesterday when they sent me an email. Now the cases are not showing up. Seems that other people with preorder access bought them up. I was contemplating until I saw the price. You would need to get at least ONE top tier auto per case to justify that price point imo.

More likely your best auto is Moff Gideon or Saw Guerrera, I would bet that 10/16 autos per case are animated/video game characters.

Depending on the quality of sketches
This could be a big deal value added wise
650 dollars is still a rip off. But nice sketches would really help
Late 2010s. There was 0-1 sketches per case

From watching cases ripped on whatnot today, 7-8 sketches per case is the common outcome. Printing plates will replace the sketch if they hit. Cards look great and sketches seem to be similar quality to previous few Masterwork releases

People win on boxes for EQL. It's the cases that are impossible. I haven't seen anything online that shows a single person not cheating the system that has won cases more than once. Topps has probably run around 20 EQLs now. Obviously at best 1 out of 20 is terrible odds. Over that time just releasing products on Topps website that sell out quick I've probably been able to get cases around 40% of the time.

Here's a 2-box personal break from Layton:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_M4BaTYibo
First, how the signers of the cards in the first box's hands haven't fallen off yet, I have no idea. Every set, they sign thousands of cards.
Second, the condition of the cards is horrid. I don't know if this is an issue just with this batch of boxes, but the cards' corners are all mushed in, the edges are chipped to bejesus and back - such low quality control.
They hit some weird C3P0 card so it might be a winning break - I don't know, they say the odds of hitting that C3PO card are 1:1,000 or something - personally, it's not something I'd really care about for my PC, but if they're going to make some money back, good for them.
But again, trash quality control on the cards, and the same garbage signers you see in every product in box 1, and in box 2 one fella they should have stop signing the poor guy (stroke) and the second signer I haven't seen as much of, but is an ancillary character that doesn't have much value. The two sketches are magic marker sketches. They're not horrid but not anything special either.
They just keep on serving up these steaming boxes filled with @#$! and people keep buying them up.
The Layton Price per personal box: $639.99. So the guy who bough these personal boxes paid $1,279.98 + tax for this two box break. INSANE.

INSANE.
Those two boxes were pretty good from what I've seen believe it or not. There are a lot of sketches in this product and it appears 75 to 80 percent arent great.
Due on Whatnot really opened 2 cases (about $10,000!) worth of product and hit two decent silver frames of mildly popular characters. Hes still probably looking at a 7K loss.

This is why we will never get "high end" at fair prices again. To many insane gamblers.
Even $380 is completely unhinged for this set

My LCS was $550, while $100 cheaper than many online, that is still ridiculous.
Remember when these online retailers used to sell on small profit margins? They would sell high quantity to make their money.
Now they make huge profits, but sell way less number of boxes. Nobody other than breakers can afford to buy multiple cases of stuff like this.
A box of Masterwork or Tribute baseball are nearly the amount of what some people make in a week!

Yes because back then they had competition, now they completely control the market and are colluding together on prices, I've said it before, disgusting to see it come to this and good deals are few and far between. This is driving the buyers away, unsustainable and I think it will collapse at some point. Way to go greed.

It will collapse for sure, once the gamblers are burnt out from selling their "winnings" at a loss on secondary. Collectors should not be ripping or breaking right now. Grumble and wait it out. Don't feed the opportunist breakers!

I’ve been saying this for five years now. I’ve come to realize that the gambling industry always has new people coming in. This is the new normal. Questionable people took over the hobby and have found a way to profit off of it like no other.

For anyone who didn't watch the video, the hits were:
1. Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico Auto
2. Emily Swallow as the Armorer Gold-Framed Auto
3. Clone Trooper Sketch (3 or 4 color magic marker sketch) - I'd say a "B"
4. Tim Curry as Emperor Palpatine /99 Auto (poor guys sig gets worse each year since his stroke)
5. Brian Blessed as Boss Nass Auto
6. Yoda Black Sharpie "shadow effect" Sketch - I'd say another "B" (just using the negative space and black sharpie to make a Yoda: dollar to donuts the artist probably made several similar sketches - once you learn where to put the marker, you can probably knock out each one in under 5 minutes).

Probably only one name left that could generate big buzz in the Star Wars card market, and that's Frank Oz. But apparently it's not going to happen -- he refuses to sign.

Of course there's also John Williams and George Lucas, but that's not happening.
Maybe Kathleen Kennedy, which would be great in an ironic sense.

--If they ever got Woody Harrelson to sign that would be big.
--They keep putting Migs Mayfield base cards in sets, it would be nice if they got Bill Burr to sign.
--It'll be a few years, but they announced a standalone movie yesterday that will feature Ryan Gosling--once that's out, he would be a big one as well.

The first box had a /5 auto of a medium signer and the C-3PO short print which could end up being a big chase.
Second box pretty much a dud, except I love Chenduz sketches and I don't think what he does is "easy."
Unfortunately those are not close to the worst boxes I've seen of this product, but also seen some loaded (multiple sketch) boxes.
$370 still just a super rough price.

Many things could generate big buzz.
* They can always start doing proper inscriptions which would lead to many people wanting to upgrade their collections.
* They might one day decide (be it by mistake or design) to release properly good card designs (thinking on par with Rittenhouse GoT full bleed designs with proper photos). This would again tempt many people to upgrade their cards.
* TV/movie sets like we were getting before breakers unanimously demanded the current format
I would easily pass on opening boxes of this set at $125 or more given the terrible expected value offered. The autos in many instances not adhering properly to the cards due to messed up card prep by Topps is just a cherry on top (Batman Begins deja vu). The text on the back of the Stormtrooper relic cards is another mockery of collectors.

CZX did a great job with Lord of the Rings, the Sketch-A-Graphs, where the actors sign the sketches, are nice..just adding something like that would help. Also, the dual and triple autos were all on-card in CZX…a lot of stuff they could do:

Didn't this guy pay $600+ for the privilege to open these?
