View Full Version : Has anyone ever seen one seller end so many amazing Colored Refractors in one night?

Now that the auctions are over, I guess it's okay to share. I was hoping to win a few of these cards at good prices, but the only cards I came close on were the Pineda Topps Chrome Red and Golds.
saojund | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/csc/saojund/m.html?rt=nc&LH_Complete=1&_fln=1&_trksid=p3911.c0.m283)
It seemed like almost everything went significantly higher than I anticipated, except for the Hellickson 2006 Gold Refractor BGS 9.5 that seems really cheap at $81. I couldn't believe that the Sonny Gray Gold Refractor AUTO went for $111 and is that far off centered top to bottom. Gray's Gold Refractors were selling for $55 just in late December with much better centering. Also, Matt Moore's Orange Refractor is already outselling the Gold Refractors of Verlander, Longoria, and Kershaw? Whatever happened to earning your prices?
So did anyone here win any of these cards? Also, how do we check if Wossa won some of them?

Congrats. Do you have any idea what that card was going for near the end of last season? That was one of the few, along with the Longoria, that might have gone a little lower than I would have guessed.

bgs 9.5 sold for $1750. :)! while 9s and raw sold from between 600-800. the scans looked real nice so i'd figured to take a chance on hitting paydirt. cant go wrong with the top auto of the best pitcher in the game.

I thought this too and then I looked at the actual scan listed in the auction and I don't think it looks that bad. I think the reason it looks so bad in the post is because it appears to be blown up and distorting the way things really look. Guess he'll just have to make the call when he gets the card.

If you look at other 2005 Verlanders, they all look like thin like that for some reason in bad scans but in-person, the autos are fine.

I picked up the BC Gold Hosmer auto :)!
I sure as hell hope it looks as good in my hand as it did in the auction. I don't know if there's a ton of upside in the card as I paid a handsome price for it ($600) The most I've ever spent on a card by a good 150 bucks. I got all fired up by watching highlights of him just raking in youtube videos. If it doesn't come back 9.5 I may break it out....and I'll surely be back here crying to all of you about my nightmare of trying to run with the big dogs.
The only other BC Gold Hosmer that I saw a completed auction for went for like 569 so I did pay more than the last one, but only by $40.
Trying to stay positive about it, but only time will tell if I made a good decision.

About half of them were graded BGS 9 or 9.5, so I doubt that. I usually don't even bid on non gradable cards, but I still tried to get those Pineda's. If his first start is good or he starts out 4-2 for the Yanks, his cards should be selling double to triple their current prices.

Best thing said all post. I grade ALOT, and I never buy from people who are selling some graded and some not. There is no way a seller like that is leaving 1000's on the table and not grading those cards. Not to mention, I think all of the stuff went VERY high. For members sakes I really hope they do grade out well, but I stayed away from all those auctions because I thought 0 of them would be good for bgs... Again like I said I hope everyone here who bought them in hopes of grading them can.

Well it's obvious the seller isn't a mass grader or pro flipper-seems to me he just picked up a huge lot. His scans, pics, and listings suck. If you go through his FB, he has hardly any graded cards at all. There are way too many possible explanations to simply say the cards will be crap bc they're ungraded.
You just can't make assumptions all the time and just gotta gamble.
Of course I'm biased since I just dropped $736 on a Gold Verlander, but it looks pretty damn good to me and these guys don't come up too often. Centering, edges, and corners appear fine. Pixel ruler puts centering at 48/52. Just gotta pray to the surface gods.
The back looks great which points to sharp edges and corners, which the seller has already warranted in the listing. Card looks better than most of my 9.5 Brauns from the same year.

Like I said man I really do hope you get good grades on what you bought. Others as well, I know the other member bought the Hosmer gold. I hope he also gets a good grade on it. It's just a red flag to me when I buy, if someone has a bunch of graded cards with other highend, to me the other high end is not worth me buying, IMO. No need to be sour. I'm just going by the scan and BGS criteria and results I've seen on autos that look like that. The auto looks like an 8, doubtful for even a 9. Great card even with an 8 or 9 on auto, IMO; but I think it would sell better raw.

Jerry, When you submit to Beckett be sure to request in writing on the submission form that you do not want it slabbed if the grade is under (whatever you choose). This way if the card does not grade up to your standards it will not be encased for you to break out.

Not a cop out. You honestly think that auto has a chance at a 10? You must be blind, or you know something I don't know about that auto. Those scans reveal an 8 auto at best...unless of course he submits and requests the blind BGS grader examine his cards. Any dolt can read:
Beckett Media LP (http://www.beckett.com/estore/helpsys/viewarticle.aspx?ArticleId=47)
And any dolt can compare to already graded cards.
All that said, they do have blind graders available for hire, as stated.
The general consensus here is that every grade is merely subjective. However, if we all go strictly by the online criteria, it cannot get a 10. If that makes me come off like I'm "this super card examining expert," then so be it.
Here's a better looking auto that got only 9:

I think I agree here. When you submit and request a minimum grade, it's possible that the grader develops a negative bias. Furthermore, would I be able to find out what the actual grade would have been if it doesn't meet the minimum? I don't know if BGS tells you what you would have gotten; does anyone know? I'd hate to not make the minimum grade but never find out what the shortcomings of the card were.
I will say this, I've never broken a card out of a case so I would be extremely nervous about the prospect of doing so. However, I'm willing to cross that bridge when I get to it. I mean, if it comes back a 9, I'd be disappointed, but I would probably still keep it in my PC. Hosmer looks to me like the real deal and definitely PC worthy card with a 9 grade. Anyone ever take a BGS 9 out of the case and send to PSA and get a 10? PSA 10 should be equal to BGS 9.5 in value yes?
Thanks for the opinions guys. Keep'em coming.

If you do a MG on a 20-day turn around, and it doesn't meet it, you only pay $2 if it doesn't get slabbed, as opposed to the higher fee if slabbed.

I understand your view point, but it simply just isnt correct all the time. I know for me, I grade when I can, when I have funds available. Many times people ask me, why I havent graded a card that is on ebay, they have the same assumption you do. Last year, I bought 2 trout bowman sterling black autos. When I rcvd them, I put them on ebay at 350-400 BIN each. Bunch of low ball/crap offers. After about 2 weeks, I looked them over and decided to send them to bgs. One came back 9.5 and the other was a 10. People had a chance to buy both really low, but their assumption cost them a lot of money. People dont always grade the second they get a card. I wait until I have several and then I have to raise the funds to pay for it. Meanwhile, many times, 9.5 cards are sitting right on ebay.
I hope people do well on these. Hopefully his story is true about picking up a collection. If it is, then the cards should be fine.

I got the Gold Hosmer today and I'm extremely happy with it. The only blemish I see is a microscopic black dot on the back. It's not dimpled anywhere, the surface is like glass; ZERO roll lines or scratches. I'm not sure if the black dot is just a random ink dot or is something I can wipe off. I haven't tried yet. It's the size of a pin head. Centering looks and measures near perfect (I don't have a micrometer, but my trusty ruler says so). I'll be dumbfounded if it doesn't gem. Of course, grading companies excel at bewildering their clients....so again, must wait for the "experts" to rule on this one. I would trust and recommend the seller based on my experience.

Beautiful card. I see the auto graded a 10 but what about the card itself? The 2005 Bowman are very tough grades from what I can tell. Congratulations on the auto grade. BTW, the main reason I want to bump this up is because I love to see my two favorite members here go at it. :D

Why thank you Tyson you are quite kind. I only had the auto graded in an effort to prove internet superiority.
The card graded a 9 which I expected due to a back corner. Can you not see it on the bag? It shows up on iPhone.

No sorry, I can not see it. Very solid grade on a beautiful card. It feels good to be right, doesn't it. ;)

Don't worry Jenkinssssss, RedSox doesn't know what he's talking about most of the time. He just likes to start arguments, and unfortunately, he probably saw your post first.
Sick card, and very nice grade!
