Howdy Gang!
I figured I need to join the cool club and start an art thread. After working in the editorial field for 8+ years, I've had a blast working on sketch cards and commissions for the last few months. I'm working on several sets now that'll appear in 2014. I'll add my name to the new 'artist directly' sticky soon too.
I finally ordered some personal sketch card blanks. Here are two I finished recently - "Dr. Fate" and "Tarman"

Here are my covers I finished at the NYCC for the Topps' Mars Attacks booth. I have several blanks left for commissions.

Jason, as "art director" I'd like the card to be in the style of the old Topps Star Wars cards.
As a surprise twist, the "shot first" could actually be either Han or Greedo beaning the other with a pea shooter in grade school.
Ok, I'll leave...

2013 has been a fun year for me - I journey into the sketch card realm for the first time, had the pleasure of drawing for Topps (Mars Attacks and Star Wars) at NYCC, and met numerous people on Blowout who are receptive to my inky doodles.
Thanks again for checking out my art and hopefully I'll have more to show in 2014!!

One of my talented friends and I trade Christmas gifts each year. This year, she quested her family to be drawn as the Avengers. Hope her brother doesn't mind being the Hulk though with this hair/dreads, he looks more like Lobo.

Just wanted to show off three cards for the upcoming Star Wars set. The cards are TINY so getting detail is tough. Tried my best.
the Wampa was NOT approved with the blood (stupid Star Wars for children - boo!) so I'll be keeping it as a return. I do believe the Wampa has a bloody mouth in the movie though.....like he just finished a Tauntaun sandwich.

Just curious do the sketch cards have blank or written backs? If blank they may just be gluing a full back and boarder to the sketch card.If not then I would go with the original idea.I was thinking A&G style myself w/ the smaller sketch card resting inside a Chrome frame.

Alrighty!!! I think I can finally show off the project I've had fun working on over the last few days. It's a autograph booklet for everyone's favorite 80s villains - Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.
If you can't tell, the book will fold in the center with the front cover being the 'Freddy vs Jason' splashed text graphic.
Inside each blank window will be an autograph of the two actors, Kane Hodder and Robert Englund, famous for portraying the baddies.
Of course Blowout's own, Steven, is custom building the booklet. In return, I'll be drawing him something on his choice in the future!
I can't wait to get my paws on it!

I'll be doing Steven a custom sketch card in return, but will keep it secret until I get finished!

THANKS!
Here's the four cards I've completed for the Mars Attacks miniatures game. Six more to go!
Also....a neat coincidence....the town where the martian invasion takes place in the game is Greenville - the name of my hometown. I'm going to do a card or two featuring Greenville landmarks.

Great MA sketches, and that last one reminds me of Earthworm Jim.

As far as the JEEPERS project, I don't know!!! I'd love to have a printed/collated set myself, but don't know of the best way to do it. I assume we'd have to leave it up to the individual artist to print a batch (100 or so) of their cards. They could sign the backs and maybe mail them to me so I could collate?? Any suggestions on printing?
The poster would be the easy way for everyone to view the cards, but like you, I'd like to have the set once we're finished.

Probably easier if all of the cards were printed on one sheet as a set, maybe arranging them 6 x 5 or so. Since you have an odd number of cards, make a checklist to get an even 30.
As far as cost for a nice 2 sided run, I have NO idea. I guess you could print them with selvage in between and guide lines for where to cut into individual cards (for those that'd want to do so).

Here's the latest three Mars Attacks sketch cards for the upcoming miniatures game.
Totally at random, the city in the game is named Greenville, my hometown. I decided to draw a Greenville, SC landmark, the Falls Park Bridge, being blown up by the martian invaders. At the bottom,my wife, one of our Dachshunds and myself are running from the destruction.

Thought I'd show off some off my Marvel Premier cards. First let me say this is the most fun I've had on a set. The card stock was amazing though the silver foil on the single cards was slightly distracting. In total, I did about 110 cards counting each type - singles, booklets, 3 and 4-card panels.
I'll start w/ the 4-card panel ones. I actually combined four of them into two large puzzles of Rocket Raccoon and Man-Thing (because he was a childhood fav).

Nice job with the cards. I probably won't be buying any of this product, but I'll definitely be keeping an eye on the secondary market for singles.
Those puzzles will probably be used for redemptions. At least, that is what they did last time.

Good to know about the two puzzles being redemptions. I'm guessing they'll fold the other multi-panel cards and insert into packs or will they be box toppers? Seems collectors wouldn't want the cards folded.
Since you wanted to see sketches of the singles, I'll start with those next!!!

I can see how the paint would chip if folded too many times. I used some acrylic on my panel cards though not too thick. Hopefully there won't be much chipping then.

Stout's production work on the ROTLD is amazing. It's my favorite horror movie all time and I've been a zombie nut since the mid-80s when my older cousin's would babysit and make me watch it. The Tarman still kinda freaks me out.

Awesome!!! ROTLD is one of my favorite films. I got to meet Linnea Quigley a few years ago at Wonderfest and she's a really nice person. I've met William Stout on numerous occasions and bought several original pieces from him. Really nice guy, easily my favorite artist and a huge influence on me growing up.

And my FAVORITE part of my Marvel Premier cards are the booklets. I designed my own subset I call "Famous Fisticuffs". My goal was for them to appear like classic wrestling or boxing posters. And yes...that sexy, martian-fightin' hero in the center is me! :)

Happy to have the Topps Star Wars 'Masterwork' cards outta my hair. Remind me never to do so many borders and hand lettering again!! (that is until the next set when I plan on using classic Football and basketball designs). I've already drawn up some 1965 Topps football and 1969-70 Topps basketball designs as commissions using the tall ROTJ blanks.
Onward to the next project!
*wish I would've gotten an updated scan of the final cards. Several are missing from this scan and I added a few touches on others.

Thank you. I'm happy how they turned out. I was reliving my childhood sportscard collecting days all over.
I asked about a comp box too and yeah....too bad. From everything that's been posted in the SW thread, all rippers will have a great shot at pulling a coveted sketch.
Email the Topps AD and let him know about creating a throwback SW set. He mentioned to me he's toyed w/ the idea before. Maybe my art can be inspiration for them to try.

Here's my first AP from MW. It's sold but I don't think the buyer minds if I show it off.
To differentiate the AP from the pack-pulled 1985 cards, I drew Boba beyond the black border (all pack-pulled stay within the square). I also used metallic paint and added 'AP' in the upper right corner. Let's call it a 'Faux Foil Stamp"! Too bad Topps doesn't print 'AP' for artists.

thanks Steve. Even though I was never a big Thundercats fan, I appreciate Mumm-Ra as a villain!

Great card Jason! Keep up the awesome work.
THANKS! I've been wanting to do an Ed Roth-styled take on the martians for a while. I still want to do it with SW characters. Soon....soon... :)

I have seen his and though they were fun. I'll try to bring my own take to them.
I'm a hot rod guy at heart and grew up around muscle cars. I'm more excited about the upcoming Mad Max film and it's vehicles than I am the new SW.

I have a base card in the SW:Illustrated set - the one-sheet subset. I wasn't sent any examples from Topps so I'm trying to buy them from anyone who is willing to sell cheaply. I'm using them as a giveaway to anyone commissioning me for a piece of SW art. Here's what they look like after I sign them!
BTW, the 10 examples I have are VERY off-centered to the left. Hopefully ALL the copies aren't like this??!!
Again...if you do have a copy you're willing to part with, let me know. I'm not selling these - just using them as promo inserts in my packages. THANKS!

I'm one of the 6 artists setting up at the 63rd Philly Non-Sports card show this October 17th and 18th. It's a RARE Con for me (only 3rd ever and first non-local) so if you're in the area please stop by to see me. I'll have prints, pre-drawn comic covers and cards and blanks for each for sell.
If you are attending and think you'd like a commission, hit me up now and I'll have it waiting on you in Philly.
THANKS!!

Howdy Gang!
Not sure if you know, but I'll be setting up at the Philly Non-sports show October 17th and 18th. If you're going to be there and thinking about commissions, let me know and I'll have it waiting for you. Just shoot me a message.
This is my ONLY Con outside of my small, local one (Greenville, SC). I'd love to meet some of you!
See you soon

Here's a horror set I'm working on for the Philly Non-Sports show. There will be several more baddies adding soon!
I cut my own blanks from a Strathmore Illustration board and they're GREAT (if I do say so myself). They're the same thickness as the Topps Masterwork cards and fit perfectly in a magnetic case.

Here's part of my horror set which will be at the Philly Non-Sports show. I still have to finish the text and add splattery goodness, but they're close.
These are on my own stock I cut from Strathmore Illustration board and are the same thickness as Topps' Masterwork cards.

Glad you like them!!! Let me know if you have more character suggestions.
I'm rushing to finish as many as I can before the Philly show. I still need to add the movie name in the long, thin rectangle at the bottom along with adding final color flourishes...but they're close!

Wish I could get my hands on some! Love the crossover you do to mimic the iconic sportcards. Since your audience is broad at a show, you'd probably want the more mainstream horror.
Here's a few that I think would be cool:
Norman Bates
Ghostface
Pinhead
Hannibal Lecter
Leprechaun
Good luck at the show!
