Well I started it and got 20 cards to get going...19 commons and then one good one.
Currently ranked the 31st 30th best of 45 1983 Topps PSA sets.
Will keep scans updated as best I can.

I'm sure this isn't your main goal, but does a project like this have a good chance at long term value. The Henderson 10 i'm sure does, but the commons are what I'm curious about.
I'm shocked, based on the condition of the pre 1990 cards I have in my shoe boxes at home, that cards in this condition exist. I guess this fact here may answer my first question above.

Many cards have pop's of under 25 so its a little tough...There are a bunch I will never see for sure and might need 9's for or might need to grade myself but getting as many as I can when I can...Gonna try to do 20-30 a pop per month and see how far it takes me.
Really wanna find a good deal on the 3 big guys.

Techically, aren't they all "commons" since the print run is the same on all of them?
It has to be really hard to get a 10 grade on ANYTHING early 80's, but a complete set? Are you mad?!
Jokes aside, good luck with the set!

Beautiful, I love seeing PSA registry sets. Good Luck on the set, maybe try getting a case and ripping it, to try and get a few self subbed 10's, would be fun, and could help you get a few more 10's in your set if you get a good case

Sometimes it's about collecting and not reselling.
Like I said on another board. If $10,000 over 4-5 years meant anything to me I wouldn't do it.

Thanks for the positive comment. Fact is if you aren't using disposable income on cards whether its to re-sell or to collect you are being foolish.
This is not meant as an investment of any kind or to re-sell ever, it is meant as a collection.
I choose to spend money I earn on this instead of a lot of other things.
I guess that makes me pompous :/
So be it.
Any by the way there are A LOT of people on this board (whether they say it or not) that don't care about $10,000 over a 4-5 year period. A LOT.

Great set to work on. I'm #5 on the All-Time list. The first 500 cards are the easiest. It gets difficult/costlier after that. Go to 4 Sharp Corners website, they sell at 20% discount from their Ebay prices.
I was just interviewed for an upcoming article in SMR on the 1983 set. It will increase interest. Which makes it a double edged sword. You'll have more competition but more people will submit so some of the low pop cards will come down in price.
Enjoy the challenge. It's an underrated set with 3 all time great rookies and most of the stars of the 70's and 80's.

Thanks man and nice to find another person working on it. I made my first purchase from them, will go back and buy more soon. Trying to take my time on it instead of diving in deep.
Good to know the first 500 will be easier to get. It is a very underrated set and has a lot of great players on it.
Hopefully I'll be able to do it all by the time I have kids.

Its not bragging. If you spend $200 a month on boxes (not hard) here, that is more than $10K over the course of five years.

I look forward to the posts in this thread, best of luck! Enjoy.
I learned a lot about vending boxes in the Vintage forum last week. That made me wonder if either cellos or wax might give a better shot at a high grade.
Two responses in this thread really illustrate this hobby all too well. If all you care about is the value of cards, it would be a lot more fiscally intelligent to spend your free time researching real investments.

Cool idea. I've thought about doing this set [and other 80s sets] for a while. Always curious how cheap you can get the common higher pop psa 10s ... even at $10 per that's a lot of cash ... though as you said, over 5 years it's really not much. I just can never stop myself from buying other stuff :D

Thanks and totally agree. If you're in it just for the money it's not really worth it. Gotta have a reason behind it and a true love for it.

A lot of the commons are between $5-$10 from what I can see. I'll probably look to spend between 100-150 each order and grab 19 commons and 1 solid addition. Figure it's slow and steady and cures the itch.

Great idea and I good luck..I'm still in need one of those special 3 players you seek as well - but also know what that will run me (actually hoped to get one at the National this past year and didnt see one). Its actually on my xmas list this year. Doubt it will happen but hoping maybe with the next round of ebay bucks I may use that to put a small dent in the price but finally get one to stash away.
Putting together a 1983 Topps PSA 10 set will be a huge challenge but I also think it will hold the value you invest into it.

Have thought of doing this set in 10 as well. I currently have none.
This was the first year I started collecting cards and I have never looked back. My uncle took me to meet Wade Boggs when he was in town at the lcs. Got 3 autos of him (which I still have them all) topps, fleer and donruss. All of which were $1.00 each per auto! The good old days. I remember them well though.
Anyways good luck on finishing your set in 10. I know of a fellow collector on the cu boards that is doing the same thing. Maybe he has some doubles. PM and I will pass along the info.

You're crazy, in a good way.
Denny Walling has 0 PSA 10s, several guys have 1, and the Rickey Henderson All-Star and Earl Weaver cards (both of which have high demand) have only 3.
Know the pop report, and be prepared to jump on any halfway decent BIN on the toughest cards.

Yea it's not "expensive" for what it is. Yea I know which one you want :). Luckily the stars and stuff like that have relatively large POP reports which means that they won't be too bad and it also means that some commons should be pretty easy to find to grade out (one would think)

I learned a lot about vending boxes in the Vintage forum last week. That made me wonder if either cellos or wax might give a better shot at a high grade.
Racks - Wax - Cello --- In that order. Rack packs are you best bet for high grade cards if they've been handled properly because the corners have breathing room. Wax is next, but you'll have up to two gum cards and a possible wax stained card. Cellos in my experience are the least viable option with tight seals and gum.

This is an awesome idea and I wish you luck. While I could do something similar, I've decided on building sets back to '72. I've got everything back to '82 completed but that was when I started collecting so what I have before that is pretty thin, it will be a lot more difficult to build them (and probably a lot less expensive to just buy the ones I can).

I read recently that a PSA 72 set (maybe 9 or better, I forget) sold for $27,000, maybe a little higher. I wasn't paying a lot of attention, I have no plans to collect graded but will enjoy looking at pics of them.
When I was a kid I always saved 1-3 unopened packs of baseball per year, from maybe 78 to 82 I think. It was hard to do. Now I want to leverage those into finding the one baseball card item I really want - an unopened wax pack of 1975. Not mini, or cello.

And just to piggyback on the complaints of spending $10K over that time - it might have sounded like a flippant comment - oh 10 grand - but if we break it down over 4 or 5 years as he said it would take, it's just under $48 a week over 4 years, or just over $38 a week over 5 years. I know a lot of us spend a TON more than $50 a week on our collection - I think it just sounded like a lot in bulk... but it's really a fair amount if you have disposable income...

I've thought off and on about doing the same thing for '87 Topps. I know the set is junk wax, but that was the first year I started collecting cards as a kid.
I had the crazy idea of doing that with the 87 set, all self subbed. Three 3 box rack cases later I have about 100 that i would sub. Then I came to my senses. I do have a really nice set to put in a binder though and 6 other sets if you're interested. Luckily I'm only out about $80.
What gets me is that I'm pretty sure only 78 topps and 84 donruss have sets in all 10s and they are the only ones where there are 10s for every card. And I think the perfect 78 set is recently completed with a nolan Ryan finally getting a 10.

Good that you came to your senses, you should be able to piece a PSA 10 1987 Topps collection together without subbing them all yourself.
I'm kicking around the idea of doing a 1959 or 1965 set in PSA 8. They are my two favourite designs.
I know it will be a 10 year project, I'm curious, do y'all think the key cards in the set are going to increase a lot in the next few years? PSA 8s used to be a lot more expensive than they are now.

Maybe the prices are stabilizing because the pop report is rising on psa 8's. You would think that an old set like that has to rise in value. If they have went down a little in price, go after it now then for sure!!

I'm pretty sure canseco isn't in the regular fleer set. Also, with dozens of hall of famers in the 86 sets, who cares about those guys?

Wow nice to see some people in this world dont care about $10K.
Love it when people brag like this, makes them even more pompous than i originally thought
10K over a 5 year period really isn't that much for something you'll enjoy for decades. I've spend that and probably more just in my last few Vegas trips and have nothing to show for it but memories....oh but what great memories they are :)!. I like it OP, I'm way too OC to do something like this. I tried to do the 1997 UD NFL Legends autograph set years ago but gave up after getting down to the ultra rare ones you never see.

Unless you consider the Traded set part of the set, then its 924 cards.

I have to start a thread for my '86 set - because of your project, it put the idea in my head. I'm doing the regular and Traded - about 20% done already - I've spent way too much...

Good luck with this set. IMO this set will cost more than the 83 set. Did you see what the last Ryno went for? Hopefully u have one already!

No I figure the Ryan and Sandberg will be a long term project. Just had new ones put up on ebay of each actually. I have about 17,000 raw cards so I might do some of my own submissions eventually. I bought a lot of 33 Traded sets and sorted them, 12 vending boxes, and 13 hobby boxes. I'm really into this project. I already have the third rated traded set and the fifth rated standard set (top set of only tens). So after the initial surge I'm gonna be a little more judicious. But yeah it's gonna be a realllly tough set to put together. I'll take any help I can get.

I have to update this soon.
This update is to tell everyone here that I can't wait to do the 1983 insert set in PSA 10 for my first son (due in April)

I was 12 when the 1983 set came out and I loved it. I got heavily into the PSA registry about 15 years ago and spent a lot of time and money assembling sets. It was a lot of fun. I used to think about assembling a PSA 10 set, but the numbers just didn't add up, spending a lot on a set where there is still such a quantity of product. Now, populations of most cards and therefore prices have reached a point where it's a lot more palatable, and the cards are 15 years older...it's older than the 75 set was when I started that in 2002....and I do still love the set...although it would certainly be more economical to assemble a nice raw set...Johnny Wockenfuss BIN was hit at $250...hmmm...

Interesting this thread came about. Bought two large hoards this summer totaling nearly 1million cards... LOL
Got my tail handed to me on my first submission. Working thru the group submissions thru Josh, I've become far more observant and conservative grader.
I went thru about 1K of 1987 Topps last week. About twenty passed the corners and centering test. Edges and ink spots doomed the rest. Only Jack McKeon and Juan Samuel made the cut. :flex:
Alot of 7,8,9's go back into the cardboard vault... until I can pass them along to the next horder.
It has been on my mind to make a real good registry run at years 1988 and 1989.
If there are any 1983 Topps in my hoard, I will pass along the good ones...

Those are great. 792 Card sets are tough. One reason I have never sought to do one. I just hate the idea of spending that much money on a to of commons. I have a buddy that is doing the same thing with 1984 O-Pee-Chee. Cards are rarer. A little cooler looking than Basic Topps and right around half the cards of a Basic Topps set. I have 40 of his cards heading to PSA with my next sub

There was a guy building this same set, I believe on Collectors Universe, except he was opening all of the packs and boxes himself and submitting cards to be graded to PSA directly...
