good point!

Anyone tracked how many of the Soto and Acuna clears have shown up? With around 2700 hobby cases based on clear odds. How many would you guess remain unopened? I am currently sitting on one sealed case and 21 loose hobby boxes

Anyone care to share the dealernet buying prices? Hobby or Jumbo
My Wal-Mart is sitting on many discounted blasters of the stuff.
Have you actually seen them restocked in the last few weeks?

Zauron 04-30-2019 12:59 PM
I don't think it is nearly as plentiful as people think. Few sites still offer hobby or jumbos and the ones that do are all at the same price as blowout with limited quantities available. Also there is a noticeable dip in the number of Acuna 250 and Soto 300 available the last few days on ebay. Just my 2 cents

There is a ton of this stuff out there. But it’s being held back because it’s hot and has potential.

I don’t know what the right price is for this stuff anymore. You’re going to get 24+ Acuna/Soto at worst in a hobby case. That’s a really good floor that you’d be hard pressed to find in another product.
There is already 1 person in here saying they know someone sitting on 30-40 cases of this product, just think how many other people are sitting on it. Personally, I think it's crazy to turn down a doubling your money, most of which would be able to do if they are selling their sealed cases. If you have 5 sealed cases and say you missed out on the $500 pricing but got in at $600, that's still $3,000 in total. I'd argue you could sell them for $1,300 a piece right now, meaning you could make back your initial investment selling just 3 cases right now, still holding two.

Right now it seems dry, but I really think people are just sitting on this waiting to play out the market. The thing is though, since a lot of it is being held, the price when people start selling is going to affect the market.

If I had to guess I’d say we’re 40-60% opened. I have 5 clears of one guy and 3 of a couple others

Maybe as high as 70%

At what price point does this become a group breaker product again? If it makes the rounds back through the big guys, this will dry up even quicker.

I know they don't like to break products with this many packs, but I would assume the demand from their customer base would increase somewhat.

Heck, If I was siting on 5 cases of this, I would happily sell 2 right now.

If I had 30 cases, I would sell 20.

I firmly believe this will start to cool off as soon as series 2 drops and people can actually buy a topps product that has good rookies in it.

I have a fair amount of unopened update and tend to somewhat agree. This is THE most current flagship product for chasing hot rookies, and ser 2 will take some attention off it, at least for awhile. The monkey wrench in that theory is if Juan n Ron get real hot(like incendiary streaks they both are capable of)
Or if Meadows comes back strong from injury
or if Gleyber picks it up again
or if Soroka continues to pitch like this
or Bieber pitches like a lot of us expect he will this season
or if Franmil gets into a groove
or ohtani hits 4 HR his first week back
I could go on but there's a lot of "live" RCs in this set beyond the obvious that could keep people breaking. Great checklist!

TheWrightStuff 04-30-2019 02:31 PM

Bought 7 hanger boxes yesterday. Opened three so far, first one had Acuna 83 RC, 2nd had a Acuna 250 RC and Acuna RD, third had Acuna Legend in Making insert. Its hard to lose on these things at this point. Especially if you catch them discounted.

Wax always has one thing on its side. A finite supply that decreases as time moves forward.

If series 2 ends up having Eloy, Tatis, Vlad JR, and Kieboom, and all of them are having solid rookie seasons, with maybe 2 of them killing it, then Update prices will start to normalize and people go in on Series 2.

The big kicker will be when HHN drops. Because all of these guys will be in it and it will be sought after. And then Update if they don't make it in Series 2.

Right now, I'm debating how much 2019 Update I'm going to want to purchase.

I do think once rookies become available of this year's crop though, 2018 will see a slight dip.

Polar Bear Phan 04-30-2019 02:37 PM

I'm not sure how much this drops once Series 2 comes out. 2017 Update has also more than doubled in price in the last few months.

h00perstar34 04-30-2019 02:38 PM

Found 4 hangers and 5 fatties.....did pretty well

2 Acuna 250, 1 252
1 Acuna 250 variation
1 Soto 300
Gibson/Donaldson variations
Intl affair black Puig /299
Baez/hand gold
McKinney Father’s Day RC /50
Scherzer camo /25
Bunch of ohtani/gleyber/Bote/bieber/albies

Part of me agrees with this, but we've seen how time goes on and the great players separate from the rest of the pack. Will this be the year where we have 4-5 incredible players that we will still talk about in 5-6 years? I hope so.

But the realist in me tells me that we will likely get 1-2 stars in this class with several "good" but not great supporting players.

Should be fun seeing how it plays out!

And good or solid Update Rookies means $1 or less per.

This makes no sense to me. If the rookies in 2018 are hot, the sealed will be too. It's that simple at this point. (Same for 2017 too, or 2011 or any "good" year.) The checklist and how well the rookies are playing in 2019 is irrelevant as the hobby is healthy right now with enough money to go around to cover buying wax from several different years as long as the return is deemed solid.

cp312 04-30-2019 03:34 PM

Found a box of Jumbo at an LCS for what equates to $112 US...now the age old debate of rip or hold torments me lol

I'm not trying to argue anything here, and if it keeps going up that's great as I have a bit of it sealed and stashed away. (and I'm a long time holder of "socuna" as I like to call them)

I'm just saying it's gone nuts over the last month and I don't think it will sustain once we get deeper into the year with more products coming out.

So you think it will go down to what? I don’t think people who are buying hobby for $100+ are buying to rip. They’re buying to keep for awhile. That helps keep prices high because most aren’t looking for immediate ROI.

With that said, current prices are insane. But somebody is buying it.

you may be right. but if the supply is as low as it appears, i will respectfully disagree. if there is more supply than what is currently being advertised, that's another story.

Yeah last night I opened up one of the 4 hobby boxes I bought (because essentially at the price I got them, from Canadian sites, one of the boxes was "free") but I didn't get anything good apart from (maybe) gem copies of the big 3, so that definitely dampened my desire to open more.

But I can't be disappointed in results if it's still sealed ;)

GreatAlbert 04-30-2019 03:48 PM

Love this stuff. Makes me excited about the hobby. I absolutely despise flagship and have never opened maybe more than a rack pack. Until this thread.

Currently now have opened probably about 6-7 fat packs and a couple hangers. Went on what I thought would be a quick check on a WalMart and a hobby shop to get a four row. Well, said hobby shop which I rarely go to because he is more jerseys and hats had Update at release pricing!!

Ended up with:
19 hobby packs at 2.19
10 jumbo packs at 11.99
7 hangers at 7.98
2 blasters at 14.98
2 jumbo boxes at 119.99
1 hobby box at 74.99

Will be holding most of the boxed stuff I have and opening the packs.

I have no idea how much it will drop. I just think it can't keep going up, up, up. (the practical person in me:D)

I know I was out after $75 per hobby box which I bought on March 28th. Crazy to think in one month, it's climbed this much. I will keep buying blasters in the wild if I can find them.

Like I said, I hope I'm wrong, and it keeps going insane.
