I've had bad luck w/blasters so only bought 6 from Sports Memoribilia.
Highlights were:
Ozuna and Jordan Hicks SP
Gold Ohtani Debut
2 Acuna base
and one Father's Day Acuna/Albies "Futre Is Bright" #'d 1 of 50.
How big of a hit is that, haven't seen any on ebay or watchcount
Nice hit on the Father's Day Acuna!

For comparison's sake, I also ordered 6 blasters from SM...pretty standard/expected results:

3 Acuna base (2 with a dinged top-left corner)
1-2 Acuna RD
6 Torres base
1 Soto base
Jackie Robinson relic #/25 (can't recall player)

That was about it

Amazing how all these threads seem to deteriorate into one retail post after another.

People love their retail. Even though they often pay a greater profit margin on that product to Wal-Mart and Target than most of their local card shops charge on their Hobby boxes. (Obviously this does not include the clearance on items that are older)

OK. To bring it back around.

What actually is a GOOD price for 2018 Topps update?

I'd say if you can get any retail at retail price, even without the discount, that's a good price.

So $20 for a blaster is a good price. At discounted $15, you could resell immediately for small profit.

24 count retail should go for what? $75?

Hangers - no idea.

Hobby - it sounds crazy, but I think at anything under $120 is probably a good price. It can likely still be found at some hobby shops for $75 I bet - but not the ones that pay attention to online prices and certainly not the ones frequented by BO members.

Jumbo - no idea.

There is very little of this actually moving at the new higher prices on the wholesale side. I think it's likely that someone (or someones) are sitting on large quantity of this because it seems to not be in the usual places. I imagine if that's the case, that they are also smart enough to trickle it out slowly. I haven't seen it happening yet though.

There are a LOT of people looking for this for restock in their shops / online stores at prices double what it was 2 months ago and they are not getting filled.
Went to a Walmart today that I never visited before and found a full display of 2018 Topps Update including blasters, hangers and fat packs. I bought all of it.

I have a problem. lol
Thats an impressive find. On clearance?

I'd buy hangers at asking price, those seem to be the best value out there. I'd buy hobby boxes at $105/max. There's still value at higher prices, but that's my personal max.

Jumbos, I'd go to $150.

I am one person holding. As you noted, people are looking to restock (even my local LCS that's not Blowout). Which means their customers are asking for it constantly.

The more this stuff dries up, the higher it goes. On the retail side, you have crumbs left.

These mindsets and comments are what keeps the price of retail down and allows people like me to break/flip/turn huge profits...

At $105 per Hobby you realize that you would have to sell the base 300 card set for around $75 to break even? You will get almost 1 "good" parallel per box on average that will net you $7 on average. Everything else you get will net you $35ish so you break even after fees.

Jumbo would be along the same lines at $150 per box but slightly worse.

My "mindset" is that I'm tired of seeing retail breaks over and over again in a thread devoted to discussing pricing on sealed product. I am fine with including SEALED retail pricing in the discussion.

my Sports Memorabilia 12ct Blaster shipment arrived safe and sound, no issues

This isn't directed completely at you, but more general thoughts because the only counter argument for Hobby vs. Retail are mainly the Black/Clear parallels.

Let's say the Acuna Clear is worth $1800 and the Black is worth $1000.

The Acuna Clear adds exactly .55 cents per hobby box in value

The Acuna Black adds exactly 1.176 per hobby box in value

You can obviously do that for Soto and a few others but the gap will come no where close to the $60 per box you are paying in additional.

Not to mention the combined odds of hitting either of those cards is more than 1:675 Hobby Boxes.

Gotcha... The results help with the discussion though if people realize you aren't missing that much in the retail from what truly sells.

IndySportsCards 05-07-2019 03:16 PM

I would never buy Jumbo boxes of this as I've seen the Hobby Boxes loaded with parallels, the jumbos not so much.

No I get that - I enjoy your insights. I am tired of reading about going to walmart and seeing nothing on the shelves in a thread devoted to discussing sealed product prices.

And there is a separate place to post breaks. I wanted to clarify the meaning behind my post. :)!

Bum fights.

It’s the only explanation.

No one can afford hobby bowman products, so us homeless drunks were drawn to this slum of a product.

The distributors and topps are laughing at us poor fools, buying this overproduced garbage and claiming our tiny victories.

Same thing happened in basketball, with prizm.

We are the entertainment for them.

Bum versus bum - there are no winners.

Except for the watchers.

Let it be know, I opened a case of 8 hangers, only one acuna. Had another 8 box case, and the first hanger? An acuna followed right by another gold acuna. Do with that what you will

Well, a case of 8 hangers only has 576 cards counting inserts. It's a 300 card set. That was bound to happen, and why I've avoided buying large volumes of the hangers. At prices a few weeks ago, sure. Assuming collation isn't completely random box-to-box in a case, the most you could hope for would be two.

True. I bought the case at $99 so it seemed fair. Ended up with 4 total including the gold on the second case. Broke even for now but at the prices now tits definitely not worth it

Yeah, I can't touch them at current prices. When they were <$10/ea, they were a steal.

Deteriorate? I can’t afford hobby so thank God for retail.

crazy4kinsler 05-08-2019 07:30 AM

What sucks is trying to get rid of all the unsorted base cards after ripping. I have a 3200 count box of all the base cards (an additional box of about 600 inserts too), and no one seems to want them. It's really sad. I guess I should've kept all those 30+ hanger packs, 10+ hanger boxes, 2 hobby boxes, jumbo box and 4 blaster boxes all sealed.

Currently $200 on here for a Jumbo. Was $88 around release. It was always going to be a winner and might go the way of 2011 Update in a few years.

You can still find them on ebay for around $185 dlvd. But the days of finding these at a reasonable price are long gone.

What's a good price, right now? The value isn't really close to the asking price if you opened a box right now unless you hit an awesome parallel which odds are very low.
