SGC Grading
Has anyone used them recently? Was looking at sending in a few cards to give them a shot and was just wondering what kind of times they have been seeing from them?
Thanks |
SGC usually has turnaround times between same day and 20 days. Times are approximate. Just like the two other major graders, they have been swamped with orders. With that said, they have more or less been able to meet or even beat the estimated turnaround times.
I've had 20 day orders completed in 15. I even had a 7 day order take less than three days to complete. However, those were mainly from late last year. This year, with PSA's backlog, more people are starting to use SGC as their PC backup grader. As such, I've had some slower turnaround times. I had a 3-day order take 5 days which is not too bad. But, I did have one 7 day order take 15 days. So there is a noticeable lag with some orders, lately. Overall though, I would consider them a good grading servicer overall. Considering the grading climate we have,. at this point you almost have to expect some orders to be a late. No one has guaranteed turnaround times anymore. As of this posting, SGC will begin processing your order the day after it has been delivered. So at least you don't have to wait days to weeks for your order(s) to begin the clock. |
Also, I would keep up to date with the news. Any possible cornoavirus situation might affect turnaround time or worse, prevent grading all together.
SGC is in Boca Raton, Florida. So at this point, I think you're safe from a quarantine zone perspective. PSA, on the other hand, being in California where lots of cases are developing could have to alter processing or even close up shop if it gets really bad. Just some food for thought. |

They are still processing orders the day after they get them. So they are quick to get things running. However, I am just being honest in saying there's been an order or two that has come in a bit later than expected. More times than not they are still on time.
Right now, I'd just be concerned with just how fast they can process if there ends up being a situation due to the virus hysteria. Goes the same with all the graders. |
I picked up a set of 86 fleer and wanted to grade a few of them to start just the time of PSA to get your package and enter it. And yeah the whole virus part going on is a very dynamic
situation for everyone. For sending to SGC best to use card savers and penny sleeves per normal? |
bump. what are anyones thoughts of trying this company out for modern? been submitting to PSA for last 2 yrs but with how long the backlog is, is it worth to try this company or just wait it out with PSA?

I use them almost exclusively. And I have nothing but modern cards. That said, their re-sale is simply not where BGS and PSA are. Until they get their registry up and running, they will lag. But they are getting more market share every day from modern. |
thats what im hesitant on is the resale value but with PSA bulk running 100+ business days now its really not for flippers anymore. I may try a submission. thanks for the info.
|
I really like the look of the SGC holders and have been seeing a lot of quick turn around times for subs in different FB groups...
Their values are increasing everyday and only a matter of time before they are right up there with PsA and BGS Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I use them now exclusively. If you looking for quick flip, they may not be for you. But with PSA and BGS backlog, it wouldn't make much difference. As soon as SGC get their website integration together, they will gain a lot of ground.
|
I'm ready for SGC to get a shot. Shady PSA for slow delivery and high premium days are numbered.
|
We cannot beat the turnaround time on bulk orders with SGC. I just sent my first bulk order in. Mostly with a lot of the current flavor of the month hot cards (Lebron holo's etc).
|
I decided to sent my 1st order of 10 cards to SGC today. We'll see how it works out. I already have 100's of cards with PSA in an indefinite black hole, so thought I'd try and see what I thought about service, grades, etc.. Might as well try it and decide if it was worth it. I was looking over sales of SGC stuff and if you have the right cards, right grades, prices are good on SGC slabs.
DATE SENT: 4/23/19 |
Have been waiting and hoping for SGC to get a shot at mainstream relevance. Love their black slabs and the grading scale being more in line with BGS/PSA/10. Customer service seems very good and turnaround times have been the best, hopefully they can keep that up given an increase in submissions with PSA and BGS being so far behind. I also don’t want to support PSA due to the scandals and such but right now the resale is hard to pass up. But for PC or longer hold cards SGC is looking like my go to!

Just sent out a sub with SGC as well. Can't beat their turnaround times compared to the other companies

If they pull through I'll probably use them more often. I've had cards at PSA since early December now. |
How are the SGC holders? Are the cards loose like PSA holders or firm like the BGS ones? How do the SGC compare to PSA/BGS cases? Sleeve on card like BGS or no?
I have like 30 cards I'd like to grade and am seriously debating sending my 30 cards there |
I will be giving them a try finally in May. Now over 400+ cards, and can't wait forever.

I have like 30 cards I'd like to grade and am seriously debating sending my 30 cards there
Here is a comparison all next to each other. SGC doesn't have a sleeve like BGS, it sits inside the black insert. There is no movement. In terms of size, you can see it is slightly taller, in terms in thickness it is a touch thicker than PSA but thinner than the BGS. Aesthetically, I find the SGC slab very clean. I have a lot of vintage cards in SGC holders (old flip) but not too much modern and have never subbed with them. I have noticed more modern cards in SGC slabs lately though as more people grow frustrated with long wait times. I have a bulk sub waiting at PSA since last year and have another 200 cards to send in. Like others have said though, the resale value isn't there right now at PSA level so I'll probably just wait. I have been purchasing more BGS/SGC lately than PSA due to the fact that often times you can get the card sometimes at a fraction of the PSA 10 price. |

Currently have 2 orders at sgc. Very happy so far just hope the resale value continues to gain ground. If the card was for PC I think sgc is clear way to go
|
What is the thought on crossover SGC to PSA? I have two cards that are SGC 96 that I'm considering crossing over. Would the SGC 96 typically crossover to PSA 9? Any chance to hit a PSA 10?
Thanks |
Recent 22 Card SGC Submission
I've been sending an increasing amount of cards to SGC, and have really enjoyed the service and results. This order took 34 calendar days for anyone thinking about submitting.
Here's an order of 22: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avoj5uAt5M4&feature=youtu.be |
I really wish they would change their labels again. They look like a teenager designed them. I just can't get past that. Holders appear to be nice, but I can't send them anything and have those labels put on them.
|
they Received my first order today and 2nd will be there Wednesday. Let’s see first time sgc testing
|
Order they recieved monday 4/27 and was logged 4/28. Much better then my more expensive PSA order not logged in yet that was delivered 3/16. Rough shutdown or not
|
Really sad, if they even had a decent label, I might consider using them. They make all these great changes, have a sweet black slab, then they pay a guy $5 to make their label, doesn't make sense.

They did a TON of focus group testing on that label. Clearly the response was good, or they wouldn't have gone with it. Not everyone will like it... but it seems to be working based on the volume of the new slabs I'm seeing everywhere. All that's to say that it is completely subjective and I'm in no way discounting your opinion. |

I like the slabs a lot and the service even more. That said, I agree seems off with the label IMO but It doesn't really bother me either. Definitely not the best one out there though. |

That’s your opinion man. People that bitch about labels are funny. You’re submitting your card to be graded which comes down to someone’s opinion so you can bitch about it when it comes back a grade you don’t agree with. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's my opinion, and a lot of other people's opinion as well. No need to get all cranky about it. Yes, grading is about quality, but presentation means something. You can have the nicest card in the greatest of condition, but if you frame it with something that looks less than stellar, it takes away from the card and the grade. No one is telling you to stop using them. I promise its still ok for you to use them. No need for the emotional response. |
is SGC really gonna have a chance when they didn't put anything towards fixing there website for years now? i can't even look up my damn cards.
i think sgc is a nice company and does good things but psa has a nice website which makes them serious. people like that and them more people like psa's website, the more they will go with them, and the more you will be psa cards for sale. seeing a sgc card seems strange. if you do an ebay search right now for 2019 sgc you get under 1,000 results. for 2019 psa, over 27,000. BGS is about 10k. who is the standard you want your cards slabbed in? psa. sgc needs to get those numbers up or they will never hang. i have a ton of lebron rookies in sgc slabs and i'm pissed i prob need to crack them out and send to psa. either that or lose a bunch of money reselling |
After I started submitting to sgc, I wonder why I never noticed how cheap and small the psa cases look. That black border around the card that sgc uses just makes the whole operation Look more professional
|
I would never pay a penny over Raw price for an SGC card. It adds no value.
Funky tasting off brand Cola, or Gas station coffee of the Grading world. :coffee: |

The SGC black cases are really growing on me. In a time where most of the desirable cards are refractors/Holos they look stunning against the all black matte frame.
People always say to buy the card but not the plastic but we do it allllll the time. I think the tide is slowly starting to turn in SGC's favor... |
I like sgc
|
For me PSA has the best resale value and labels, BGS has the best holders, and it would appear SGC has the best turnaround time. The only one I really care about is resale value. If SGC surpasses PSA in resale value I will happily submit to them no matter how "ugly" I think the labels or holders may be. I don't see that happening in the foreseeable future (or ever to be honest), but who knows what the future holds?

Customer Service can take a company a long way. But the card world is about visual appeal. They have the long term potential to climb to the top if they do what others are not doing as well as fix their labels where their brand does not appear cheap. In the interview linked, he talked about listening to people when it come to holograms on the label. Hopefully they use that a chance to make the next step forward. |

CGC is the king of comic book grading both visually and resale value etc.
https://www.cgccomics.com/ Same logo as on back of a SGC case and Company name similar in sharing "guaranty Company" Found an article online where SGC many years ago was able to break away from the umbrella of other grading Companies CGC offers. (coins etc) Either way they come from a good background. I can tell with their new logo on their site they went through a rebranding. I presume they may or may not change that logo on the back of their case to match the new rebranding. It may just be once they finally run through the cases on hand. CGC label has gotten better over the years, hopefully the two companies are within good standing to the point they could perhaps spruce up the label a bit. (if they need help) Perhaps offer 1 for vintage and 1 for modern or option at checkout. the label needs some work for me personally (and i get it, that's subjective) but I can also see where the label likely looks good on the older stuff, but just like the flashy rebranding one should definitely go all the way. |
I am going to be sending some early 90s basketball to them in the near future.

I sent them a few of those, and then some modern. |
Just sent in 80 cards, fingers crossed as this is my first sub and decided to use SGC instead of the other 2. I really like the look and feel of them and the black just makes most cards pop, very visually appealing...

I think there is some good feedback, both good and bad, for and against SGC on the whole. Some of the main benefits are the differences from PSA, which is clearly the industry standard at the moment.
1. They're relatively clear of all this dramatic trimming discussion. However, this speaks to a weakness with their brand in some ways as well because the reason these arrangements exist with PSA and BGS is that there's such a dramatic demand for higher graded cards in those slabs. While I have noticed SGC drawing a big premium on Pristine graded cards, it feels like 9s still move somewhere in the "raw but looks gradeable" price structure. BGS had similar trouble breaking into the market, but started to offer an option that wasn't available at PSA, which was subgrades so that you could get a more accurate picture of why your cards was evaluated the way it was, even if you disagree. I would imagine that the most frequent attempt at crossovers are BGS 9's trying to get into PSA 9 holders because the secondary market strength comparison. The hobby movement (somewhat) away from autographs as the only viable cards of value is also something that makes "autograph grades" a less important feature on cards. PSA is doing much better on copies with less than perfect signatures that can still achieve high grades on the card's condition itself without the big glaring qualifier beside it. 2. Collectors are resistant to change, but new collectors are not as timid and there is a lot of new money coming into the hobby right now that are willing to speculate on the 3rd most easily recognizable service in the hobby with the idea that as SGC gains traction as a trusted grader in the hobby, their ROI might be higher on strong examples when a card starts to get absurdly hot. I personally believe that BGS is trending down, especially with the black label fiasco and pretty firm proof of favoritism/backdooring high grades. PSA has been fairly unaffected on the whole as far as casual collectors are concerned, but BGS 8's and 9's (even some less than gem 9.5) seem to be suffering in the market. Their cases have always felt a little overdone to me in terms of how much room they occupy and how removed you feel from the card while holding it. 3. SGC feels like the most comfortable service to submit to right now that will evaluate cards accurately and fairly with less emphasis on who submitted it. Even some noted schills for SGC aren't getting Pristine grades on big cards all that frequently, at least among those that publicly share their results. I am pretty confident in saying that SGC has the highest card condition to grade accuracy with less concern for population control the way you see with PSA to prop up the value of their 10's. That might be because they're marketing towards grading integrity more than others, but the amount of cards you see in PSA 10 holders that are clearly less than gem is troubling. This might be a result of volume grading being so high that each card gets less time in the evaluation process. SGC does less volume, so that seems to track with the things they catch that PSA might miss and make the grades more representative of the card condition. 4. An absolute gigantic problem with SGC is the lack of functioning population reports and registry building. It's essential for them to allocate some of their recent profit to bolster these weaknesses or they will be unable to make ground on BGS and PSA. Being unable to run the pop numbers leaves collectors a bit confused as to what kind of premium should be expected from an SGC 10 to an SGC Pristine. Even with SGC 9's and 9.5's there's a sense of not really knowing the price point and I have often seen back to back listings where two copies of a card in those conditions have moved for around the same price on the secondary market. 5. Aesthetically, it's a matter of preference obviously. However, I do think people are harder on any new entry into the grading pantheon for a few years until they grow accustomed to seeing it. PSA has such a clean and unobtrusive design that it's hard to feel particularly impassioned about it one way or another. But the typeface is clear and easy to read and that's a huge bonus. Plus, we've been seeing the same iteration of the slab for decades now so it's sort of our touchstone for what a graded card looks like. The people that like the PSA label more and can't articulate it are probably doing so because of familiarity. Admittedly, I am a fan of the SGC black holder because it makes the colors of the card pop a bit more, which especially in vintage is a huge aspect of presentation due to the number of faded lower grade copies that have sat sun exposed in some dealer's case for ages. To me, the black border is fantastic. I think it will be more frequently accepted over time. 6. SGC has already made the biggest leap from the rest of the field because of their grade reliability, unlike a lot of fly by night operations that are throwing 10's on every submission so that their customers can squeeze out a few extra dollars from collectors that think they see a snapout candidate. I don't think people are shopping for SGC slabs for that reason anymore as they gain name recognition in the hobby. There is still a margin of money to be made in doing that, but it's not as cost effective as it once was. As grading services get more popular, the tougher they seem to be on their submissions in order to protect the integrity of their grading structure. SGC will be interesting to track moving forward. I think they're rapidly gaining ground on BGS, but PSA is still out of reach. |
just sent 15 cards to them for the first time. we'll see!
|
I've been on the SGC bandwagon for a few months now. I love their service times and I have definitely seen an increase in resale value in that time. I sent cards to PSA back in January and still haven't gotten them back, whereas I've shipped and received back 3 orders from SGC with 1 more pending in the past 3 months.

Usually they're on point but I'm in the same boat (day 7 on a 5) and they won't answer my questions. I have even been back and forth on a bulk order and am going to tell them, I'll send in when they give me clarity on stuff they have of mine - may not work but we'll see |

Yeah I’m on day 10 of a 5 day submission and nothing yet. Sent a follow up email on Monday and no response.
I think they’ve hit their grading capacity limit, which is not a good sign moving forward. |
Are you counting calendar days or business days? My last 20 day order was done in about 30 days but equaled exactly 20 days.
Plus, when you take into account that they are probably working with a reduced staff, the throughput is going to be smaller. |
I just sent in 695 cards. Sorry to slow the system down but I am excited to see how they do.

The think the reason that it takes some time to go from processing to shipped is SGC uploading the seller-ready scans to your account but I’m just speculating on that |

Business day 41 on a 20 day, 30 card sub...
Sit tight fellas, understand they are working with reduced staffing...comms have gone silent also... |
So I have been looking at the SGC website and when I went to their submission spot it looks like you would have to put every single card in individually? Is that right? So if i have 20 of a single card I cannot do quantity 20? I have to list it 20 times? Am I missing something?

If you think ANY grading company cares about making things easy on the people submitting cards you are confused. All they care about is cashing checks. Mike |
If PSA is going to be completely hardbutts and try to pop control everything, I can see SGC gaining market share.
|
I'm on business day 11 of a 5 day 15 card submission. Just moved to "graded" so hoping they ship tomorrow. Won't be using them again. I'd much rather wait more business days and get PSA/BGS at this point.

That is definitely a problem if this early on in them attempting to grow that they can’t get a 15 card submission out without going twice the time it should take. |

I don't think so. It's obviously unfortunate that they haven't been able to get some of the orders out on time (mine included) I do believe that the influx of business they picked up was unusual and unlikely to happen again at the same rate of increase that was caused by PSA and BGS closures and frustration over response time. Truly, there's no business operating so far above their capacity that they could handle a surge this large, or else they've been running at less than peak profitability (too many employees, inactive employees, inefficient processing, and other "fat" that could/should have been eliminated) so the delays don't concern me that much with the amount of volume they're putting out. If the "problem" persists after they've had time to train and hire new staff, that would be problematic. As it is, I can't see how the full time graders they have on staff could possibly meet all this demand and still maintain a degree of accuracy in their grading. |
Just watched this video which purportedly is based on correspondence with SGC. At the 10 min mark, they say SGC is getting a bigger facility and hiring more staff to help with the thousands of orders they're currently getting.
Agree. The labels are terrible but imma give them a shot anyway |
Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I've been watching the trends of SGC grading and they're going up. Slowly, but they're going up. The issue that's going to hit, especially with the significant PSA backlog, is that - especially with basketball - new Bball product will come out and it will take, really, forever for graded stuff from PSA to show up on the market. You're going to see a lot more basketball start showing up on the market a lot faster than PSA, maybe even by several months. Some people who want to grade to flip will even take the lower return because it's still a return. ROI is not just about total possible value return, it's how long your money is tied up. If PSA goes longer than 6 months, that tie up will too much for a lot of graders to hold onto. I just did my first submission with SGC as a test. My cards are about to mail out. Just a small 11 card grade to see how it goes. But honestly, their online system, while a tad laborious, was very easy and intuitive to use. I went to go try Beckett's as I want to send a hockey grade there, and it was so buggy it wouldn't let me get past step 1. SGC has some growing to do, but even then. If I'm getting a grade back way faster with them than PSA, even if it's not meeting the guarantees, I'll go with SGC. There's too many positive factors. And hopefully they'll listen to the hobby about things to improve. But they already have, and it seems they're in the right direction. |
