basketball - 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Hobby 12 Box Case - (5 cases)

Starting on the evening of Nov 28th, I busted 5 cases of 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Hobby 12 Box Case. I will be updating this post with more information as I have time.

None of these cards are for sale here. They are either sold or being sold on eBay.

I have 4 more cases coming this week and will add those results to this post when I have time.

Once everything is sold, paid for, and shipped out, I will be updating this post with complete breakdown of value coming out of these 9 cases. I will also be able to give an average sales price of an auto, average of a gold prizm /10, average or a prizm parallels, etc.

Pull ratio's:
(It is important to note that these ratio's only apply to hobby cases. This does not include retail. These ratio's are well over the Panini stated pull rate. [2 prizm's and inserts per box])

I pulled 18 Gold Prizm parallels /10 in 5 cases (3.6 per case - 0.3 per box)
I pulled 6 Prizm auto's /25 in 5 cases (1.2 per case - 0.1 per box)
I pulled 200 Prizm parallels in 5 cases (40 per case - 3.3 per box)
I pulled 117 Auto's in 5 cases (23.4 per case - 1.95 per box - one box was shorted 1 auto, and another box had no auto's in it)
I pulled 152 insert cards in 5 cases (30.4 per case - 2.53 per box - even distribution among the insert sets)
Some notes about opening:

The collation is absolutely terrible. In 5 cases I'm only able to build 13 complete base sets 1-300, while I have some cards with extras in qty 15-20. That is ridiculous. I wasn't shorted any big name players, so I don't think there are SP's, just really bad collation by Panini. This has been a problem with Panini for as long as I've opened their products.
All of the cards in the packs are facing the same direction. This may seem like no big deal to those busting for hits. But for case breakers, this saves TONS of time. Thank you Panini! Please keep doing this.
Quality control is fantastic, there are very few cards with dings, very few with condition issues. The base cards come out of the packs very straight and without the common Topps Chrome warping problem. Some of the auto'd cards do have a little warping, but it is not nearly as bad as Topps Chrome.
The Prizm parallels (refractors) are fantastic, the rainbow effect is very obvious, better than I've seen it with Topps Chrome refractors. Panini really did a great job on the quality of the cards.
Every single auto I pulled was a sticker auto. That is a shame, I was really hoping for some on card auto's, I think that would have really made this product even better. Still, the stickers are nicely framed with a light color behind the sticker so the auto is clear.
Prizm Parallels (not numbered) (in scans, the rainbow refraction just shows up as a slightly lighter card than the base cards. scans don't do the rainbow refraction justice, the rainbow it much better in person when you hold the card against a light source - the rainbow is obvious in person)

I won't know until everything is paid for, and I will be updating the original post at that point with gross sales figures. (does not include fees, costs, time, etc.) But it's much better than what you suggest, far better.

JK8283 12-03-2012 09:47 PM

Thanks Alex, very informative post

Cheken 12-03-2012 10:47 PM

always extremely informative on the case breaks! Didnt realize the golds are all ended. Probably would have bidded on that jersey # Lin gold parallel

zebrastar 12-03-2012 11:10 PM

keep doing what you're doing Alex, I love reading your break downs, it's so much better than sitting through a 20 minute long youtube video and it's so much more informative! I also really appreciate how non-biased you are, you're not afraid to list both the good and the bad with a product. I hope you come out on top with this break, certainly seems like there's a chance.

benz35 12-03-2012 11:18 PM

I lost the bidding on the westbrook/love usa gold :(

yea I did four cases and depending on what the rookie lots that I have listed, as well as my remaining sets, and various extra auto's i'll be very close to even after fees and everything. There still is an outside chance I even make a small profit depending on how the rookie lots sell. I have a few more to list tomorrow night, as I couldn't get to it tonight because I have a paper due.

I also wasn't able to list things the day of release either because of school so I probably would of done a little better had I been able too. If the sets don't sell well then I'll have a loss but not nearly as bad as I thought. Set prices seem to be coming down right now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they go back up.

If people want I'll get a breakdown together as well so people can see it if they are interested after everything sells.

bmuelle21 12-03-2012 11:47 PM

Alex, nice hit on the Lin Gold btw.

hellojeffy 12-04-2012 11:37 AM

wow! to see that the Lin sold for 400$. That must have been a great feeling. Considering you got 7/10 and his jersey 7 makes it all the better :D nice pulls/sells!

bigcwd2000 12-04-2012 01:52 PM

Always good information from you Alex. Love reading your box breaks. Thanks for sharing.

clipperboy24 12-04-2012 02:21 PM

nice breaks, crazy that 5 cases only yielded that. Nice looking cards and apparently hard to get the big pulls. I like the idea of making cards more rare in line with how cards used to be. The product looks really nice, will be interesting to see how they hold up in a few months in the secondary market.

GB5HOF 12-04-2012 02:46 PM

I agree 100% with everything the OP posted. I only broke one case, and felt really fortunate to have pulled 5 gold prizms (Bosh, Wade (Finalists), Pierce, and Oscar Robertson MVP). The quality control is top notch. No corner dings on anything in 12 boxes...and barely any cards had the typical chrome "roller marks" or scratches like Topps.

I actually like that the Golds are the only thing serial numbered...I think they'll really hold up on the secondary market...and the gold versions of the insert sets are awesome looking. Compared to Topps Chrome football where the amount serial numbered parallels this year was ridiculous in my opinion. Becomes pretty ho-hum unless you are pulling Reds.

Anyway...awesome product, my favorite this year.

alexlazarevich 12-05-2012 10:14 PM

I got 4 more cases today, almost done opening them all. I hit the motherload in the 2nd case.

Damian Lillard Gold Prizm 01/10.

Not for sale here, it's already up on eBay.

Hit some other really amazing cards too, some great Prizm parallels. However, one case did have no golds, and 2 cases had no Prizm auto's. But those cases had such great other pulls that it made up for it. I'll try to update the original post as soon as I have time. I'll put a pick of the Lillard there now....

MikeMamba 12-05-2012 10:30 PM

Nice hit on the Lillard!

Is his gold selling more then Anthony Davis gold?

1eyed_jack 12-05-2012 10:39 PM

Can you please PM if you pull a Kobe USA refractor? Been looking for one and had deals twice to get one, but while I was at work they got sold.

So if you pull one could you please keep me in mind?

JOHNJOHNNY 12-05-2012 10:46 PM

alexlazarevich 12-05-2012 11:01 PM
Hey man, i didn't see any base sets for sale? Got any?
I sold 20 sets in presell before the release. Collation is so bad that I'm not sure how many more I'll be able to build after this extra 4 case break. (I still owed a buyer of 17 sets additional cards because the collation is so bad)

Panini really needs to get their crap together on collation. I mean, so base cards I have 45-50 copies. Other base cards I have less than 20. That's just stupid. These aren't SP's either, they are just bench players, and it's random, and it happens with vets and RC's and legends.

If I have any additional sets, I'll post them up for BIN/BO by this weekend.

I've got your request in my little notebook, if I can build a set you are one of the first in line. (after I fulfill the previous order) I'm pretty sure I will be able to deliver. Collation is bad, but I have so many base cards to make up for it.

Building and selling base sets is the ONLY thing that keeps me in the game as a case breaker of Panini NBA products. Without those base set sales, I'd be losing every single break. That's why it's harder to bust and profit from mid-high end products. You can't build 50 base sets and sell them for $20 a pop. There are tons of collectors who want base sets of every Panini product, especially low end. Tons. I've sold out of every base set for every Panini NBA product this year so far.

nbalinks 12-06-2012 12:58 AM

Love the breakdown as always. I'll definitely be checking back to see how you did. I'm very happy to see that you will be making a nice profit. Big profits = more breaks!

Hey Alex cool breaks, I was the one who bought 4 golds off your eBay inc the drJ (in Australia)

tdmonkeys 12-06-2012 02:49 AM

A slightly off the wall question but how do you ship sets (around 300 cards) for $6.50 only? Isn't your priority cost well more than that?

Check out the USPS Priority "Regional Box A". You can fit a 500 count card box into a Regional Box A. The cost is anywhere from $5.50-$7.50, making it a much better deal than the Medium Flat Rate Box.

I never use Medium or Large Flat Rate Priority anymore. I always use Regional Box A, and the larger Regional Box B.

The only downside to Regional boxes is that you have to order those boxes online at usps.com. They are free though, and you can order then in lots of 25/each. Just order a 25/lot once a day for 4 days and you have 100 boxes.

By the way, these Prizm 1-300 sets don't fit into a 400 count card box. They require a 500 count. The cards are just a tad too thick to fit in the 400.

alexlazarevich 12-06-2012 10:44 AM

I've been accused of schilling the Jeremy Lin card by a "Euge J" on the Panini blog.

Green & Gold: The Big-Money Appeal of Two New Panini America NBA Chase Sets The Official Panini America Blog

I responded to that accusation on the Panini blog. I don't take accusations lightly, but they are out of my control. All I can do is try to assure those buyers that do buy from me that I have not, nor will I ever, schill any item I am selling. I have only one eBay account and I never discuss or encourage anyone to bid on my items. My success and getting high bids, I believe, is because I ship worldwide, I allow 14 days for payment, and I offer free combined shipping, and most important buyers come back to me because they know they can trust me to deliver the goods when they buy from me. I absolutely positively do NOT schill. I never have and I never will. I decided when I started this side business in 2010, I was either going to make it honestly, or I was going to fail because the market just isn't there. But there was one thing for certain, I was going to treat buyers the same way I want to be treated: cool cards, fair prices, honest service, no games, no tricks, no scams. I was either going to make it with that as my trademark, or I was going to fail because the market just isn't there.

"Euge J" is also known as "iakstar" on eBay. They messaged me when the Lin was for sale, and offered me $85 + $35 shipping (to Australia) for the Lin card. I responded the way I do to all such requests:

Dear iakstar,

Hi Euge,

Thanks for the offer, but I never end auctions once they've started, for any price. You can be assured I won't end the auction for any other offer as well. I hope you do bid on the item.

Sincerely,

Alex

Ive been constantly getting 400 ct boxes in the mail from the US after many of Houdini and Imnotdeds group breaks. They all come with a post mark of $4.40 or $4.90. Thats to Canada!

Using the right methods to ship can work out to reasonable prices!!

Just got in a box of Topps Five star from old goldys break. It cost less than $5 to ship to Canada as well.
