Default basketball - 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Hobby 12 Box Case - (5 cases)

Starting on the evening of Nov 28th, I busted 5 cases of 2012-13 Panini Prizm Basketball Hobby 12 Box Case. I will be updating this post with more information as I have time.

None of these cards are for sale here. They are either sold or being sold on eBay.

I have 4 more cases coming this week and will add those results to this post when I have time.

Once everything is sold, paid for, and shipped out, I will be updating this post with complete breakdown of value coming out of these 9 cases. I will also be able to give an average sales price of an auto, average of a gold prizm /10, average or a prizm parallels, etc.

Pull ratio's:
(It is important to note that these ratio's only apply to hobby cases. This does not include retail. These ratio's are well over the Panini stated pull rate. [2 prizm's and inserts per box])
  • I pulled 18 Gold Prizm parallels /10 in 5 cases (3.6 per case - 0.3 per box)
  • I pulled 6 Prizm auto's /25 in 5 cases (1.2 per case - 0.1 per box)
  • I pulled 200 Prizm parallels in 5 cases (40 per case - 3.3 per box)
  • I pulled 117 Auto's in 5 cases (23.4 per case - 1.95 per box - one box was shorted 1 auto, and another box had no auto's in it)
  • I pulled 152 insert cards in 5 cases (30.4 per case - 2.53 per box - even distribution among the insert sets)

Some notes about opening:
  • The collation is absolutely terrible. In 5 cases I'm only able to build 13 complete base sets 1-300, while I have some cards with extras in qty 15-20. That is ridiculous. I wasn't shorted any big name players, so I don't think there are SP's, just really bad collation by Panini. This has been a problem with Panini for as long as I've opened their products.
  • All of the cards in the packs are facing the same direction. This may seem like no big deal to those busting for hits. But for case breakers, this saves TONS of time. Thank you Panini! Please keep doing this.
  • Quality control is fantastic, there are very few cards with dings, very few with condition issues. The base cards come out of the packs very straight and without the common Topps Chrome warping problem. Some of the auto'd cards do have a little warping, but it is not nearly as bad as Topps Chrome.
  • The Prizm parallels (refractors) are fantastic, the rainbow effect is very obvious, better than I've seen it with Topps Chrome refractors. Panini really did a great job on the quality of the cards.
  • Every single auto I pulled was a sticker auto. That is a shame, I was really hoping for some on card auto's, I think that would have really made this product even better. Still, the stickers are nicely framed with a light color behind the sticker so the auto is clear.

High res scan examples of some cards (front and back):

Gold Prizm Parallels /10 (these are super hot on eBay right now)

The Lillard is on eBay right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MESE:IT

Jeremy Lin sold for $406 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200856381538

Dr. J sold for $62 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200856377309

Garnett sold for $152.86 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190762794660

Kevin Love sold for $167.50 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200856392836

Festus sold for $34.355 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190762793880

Wade sold for $122.50 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200855834779

Westbrook sold for $153.50 - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=190762805791

Prizm Parallels (not numbered) (in scans, the rainbow refraction just shows up as a slightly lighter card than the base cards. scans don't do the rainbow refraction justice, the rainbow it much better in person when you hold the card against a light source - the rainbow is obvious in person)

Auto Prizm Parallels /25:

Base Auto (not numbered):

Kyrie Base Auto (are they all redemption's?):

Great stuff! Had to put a bid on that Reggie Theus card because of the glorious mustache.

I won't know until everything is paid for, and I will be updating the original post at that point with gross sales figures. (does not include fees, costs, time, etc.) But it's much better than what you suggest, far better.

keep doing what you're doing Alex, I love reading your break downs, it's so much better than sitting through a 20 minute long youtube video and it's so much more informative! I also really appreciate how non-biased you are, you're not afraid to list both the good and the bad with a product. I hope you come out on top with this break, certainly seems like there's a chance.

yea I did four cases and depending on what the rookie lots that I have listed, as well as my remaining sets, and various extra auto's i'll be very close to even after fees and everything. There still is an outside chance I even make a small profit depending on how the rookie lots sell. I have a few more to list tomorrow night, as I couldn't get to it tonight because I have a paper due.

I also wasn't able to list things the day of release either because of school so I probably would of done a little better had I been able too. If the sets don't sell well then I'll have a loss but not nearly as bad as I thought. Set prices seem to be coming down right now so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they go back up.

If people want I'll get a breakdown together as well so people can see it if they are interested after everything sells.

wow! to see that the Lin sold for 400$. That must have been a great feeling. Considering you got 7/10 and his jersey 7 makes it all the better nice pulls/sells!

nice breaks, crazy that 5 cases only yielded that. Nice looking cards and apparently hard to get the big pulls. I like the idea of making cards more rare in line with how cards used to be. The product looks really nice, will be interesting to see how they hold up in a few months in the secondary market.

I agree 100% with everything the OP posted. I only broke one case, and felt really fortunate to have pulled 5 gold prizms (Bosh, Wade (Finalists), Pierce, and Oscar Robertson MVP). The quality control is top notch. No corner dings on anything in 12 boxes...and barely any cards had the typical chrome "roller marks" or scratches like Topps.

I actually like that the Golds are the only thing serial numbered...I think they'll really hold up on the secondary market...and the gold versions of the insert sets are awesome looking. Compared to Topps Chrome football where the amount serial numbered parallels this year was ridiculous in my opinion. Becomes pretty ho-hum unless you are pulling Reds.

Anyway...awesome product, my favorite this year.

I got 4 more cases today, almost done opening them all. I hit the motherload in the 2nd case.

Damian Lillard Gold Prizm 01/10.

Not for sale here, it's already up on eBay.

Hit some other really amazing cards too, some great Prizm parallels. However, one case did have no golds, and 2 cases had no Prizm auto's. But those cases had such great other pulls that it made up for it. I'll try to update the original post as soon as I have time. I'll put a pick of the Lillard there now....

Can you please PM if you pull a Kobe USA refractor? Been looking for one and had deals twice to get one, but while I was at work they got sold.

So if you pull one could you please keep me in mind?
