As the post above, I have a tough time with situations like this. "Lack of education" definitely can't be used this time since he knew damn well what happened with Oscar Taveras. He knew the risks and took them anyways.
What would you have had him do exactly? Serious question. He can influence the people around him, how do you know he's not changing the culture where he can. Is he going to go up to Yordano and take away his keys?

He could have done one of the following (not an all-inclusive list):

1. Asked him not to drive
2. Reminded him about Oscar Taveras
3. Try to convince his friends to prevent him from driving
4. Called him a taxi
5. Called the police
6. Ask a bouncer or other club worker for assistance
7. Etc.

What did he do instead?

1. Post about what he saw on Twitter

He might have been insulted if you mention Oscar T and taken it the wrong way

So you know he was close enough to Yordano to do any of those? It's very easy to sit on a high horse and talk about what he could have done. Say you are in a club and a celebrity is drunk with his friends, would you, a complete stranger, do any of those things if you saw he was about to drive?

I personally don't know how close he was to Yordano, so he could have done any of those. If, however, he had absolutely zero connection to him, you'd have to be pretty naive to think any of those would have actually affected the outcome.

It appears that alcohol was involved

Incredibly sad, but even sadder that the same mistake is happening over and over. Especially to Yordano who was one of the most emotional players after the Taveras incident.

Definitely still sad, but I struggle with cases like this where news comes out they were drinking and driving or something like that. Make bad decisions like that, what do you expect? It's a tough situation for me to deal with

While that's true and all, it's a different culture. Seems like it's the norm for people to go out drinking and driving and I'm not sure but maybe there aren't laws against it either. There was a time in our country where there weren't laws against drinking and driving as well.

It's not the norm for people to drink and drive there but I am sure that the police look the other way when it comes to MLB players or prospects. There are laws against it in DR, in the U.S. its been a law since 1910.

Just because something is illegal doesn't mean it's enforced. It's been illegal in the U.S. for a long time but officers used to let people go except in extreme cases and certainly weren't vigilantly looking for offenders. The culture is absolutely different.

Exactly. Even here in the USA, where we've had organizations like MADD around for 35+ years trying to prevent drunk driving, the penalties are still ridiculously light. You can get pulled over for suspected drunk driving, fail a breathalyzer test, and still be back on the road the next day, and in most states you can have multiple drunk driving convictions and still not have to serve any jail time.

My first year teaching high school, four kids at my school were killed when they drunkenly drove into a tree at high speed after a party. Did that stop anyone at that school from drinking and driving? Heck no! The next school year there were four more incidents of student drunk driving, with multiple injuries and a couple more deaths.

It's just sad. MLB needs to do better, clearly different cultures look at drinking and driving differently. These young players from other countries don't have access to the same campaigns and information growing up. It wasn't that long ago where drinking and driving was accepted in the U.S. MLB and the players union need to get its players up to speed with regards to the issue.

This is the only thing I care about. I have ZERO remorse for drunk drivers. I don't like 3 strike laws, 1 strike should be mandatory jail time, not this BS where you can lawyer your way out.

Although I didn't always necessarily agree with some of his antics on the field, this kid's passion, emotion and competitive spirit was hard to duplicate. It's a very sad and tragic way to leave us and hopefully the education and coaching of young players in the MLB includes the dangers of alcohol and substance abuse more now than ever before.
RIP young man. You will be missed by many fans.

Sad. I watched Andy Marte play with the Myrtle Beach Pelicans when he was highly touted prospect and met him and got his autograph. RIP to both.

Just awful, terrible news. Thought it was a mistake when I saw the headline, since Andy Marte has died the same way. Just terrible.

For those that are stating that there needs to be more DUI education, Ventura had incredible education with the Oscar T tragedy.
Individuals understand drinking and driving are a bad mix.
Sadly, too many feel invincible or feel they are sober

It just takes one person from a group to stop something like this from happening. How many people watched him go to his car? It's a rhetorical question. The point is that the more people who are educated on the dangers, the greater chance that one person makes a good decision (which could be to stand up against someone else trying to make a bad one).

Super sad! Kind of strange two mlbers die in the same night in the same place on separate accidents.
