So I have a question. I hear a lot of people saying Savers over Goodwill. I have always found my best stuff at Goodwill and thought Savers was WAY overpriced. Curious to hear more about why Savers is better in some peoples opinion. Are you seeing better quality? Do they have special sales? I was finding button down George shirts at Savers for $6.99. I can pay that and get them new at Walmart. I find Goodwill great because the category of clothing has the same price, and unlike other thrift shops they dont price the item according to brand or if it's NWT.

We don't have anything like Savers here, our main 2 are Goodwill and Hope's Closet and on clothes Goodwill is a lot cheaper but lately the selection has been trash mainly George and Faded Glory stuff.

That sucks. No savers here in Florida, but there are a ton of thrift shops. Lots of good things, probably because older people retire and die here.

In Louisville there are a couple of St. Vincent De Paul thrift stores that I've visited and they are pretty nice. Apparently there is a Savers but I've never been there. Goodwill is my go to place but I really need to check out some of the other stores. Just found out there is a church run thrift shop about 20 miles from me, so I'll be heading there soon.

I say Savers over Goodwill because my 3 area Goodwills absolutely blow. Savers has had a lot of gems for me which Ive made a lot of money off. I might pay $6.99 here and there for a sweatshirt, but I am making $15-$20 every time I do. I buy a lot of good gems for $4.99 and below but I will also pay $9.99-$14.99 for Starter jackets as I have moved them very easily for $30+ profits every time except one I believe.

Every location is different, I don't think there is a rule of thumb.

The Savers near me has crazy prices. They will price starter jackets at $25+ (I saw one once priced at 49.99). Kids Jerseys usually run $7-10 & Adult Jerseys range from 15-30. Name brand stuff is jacked up too. It's nearly impossible to make much money off of them.

The Goodwill near me does blanket pricing. Kids stuff $1.99 and Adult T-Shirts $1.99, Rest of Adult clothing 4.99, Jackets 6.99. It's very rare that they price an item outside of the standard and if they do it's usually not much different. Occasionally they will have adult Jerseys at 6.99. They also have an outlet which all the clothing is $1.75. You have to dig (wear gloves), but it's definitely worth it. I used to go to the outlet every day last year when I was doing this kinda full-time.

The salvation army isn't very good either. They have all the jerseys in a separate area with prices 10+. A Pats jersey (screenprinted) of a former no name player will usually run 25. There shirts are priced all over the place just based upon the brand. I went on a half of certain color days and I didn't come away with much as even at half price a lot of the items were more then I can get at the Goodwill.

Just went to the local Goodwill and found a beautiful Mike Huggins Bowie Baysox game used jersey from 2004 or 2005. Wish it was a bigger name, but I'm not complaining!

Those are some outrageous prices at Savers. I think the most I paid for a Starter jacket was $24.99 for a Vikings one I was planning on keeping, but then I ended up profiting $35 on it so I was cool with it. Otherwise I usually pay $9.99-$14.99 for my Starter jackets, $4.99-$6.99 for adult jerseys, $1.99-$3.99 for children's jerseys, and $3.99-$6.99 for sweatshirts (I'm picky on these depending on pricing), and I try to stay around $3.99 and under on t-shirts, but for me to spend $3.99 on one, it has to be pretty special.

Every location is different, most are independently operated. A lot of GW's in a similar geographic area follow the same pricing structure, but not all of them.

The two closest GW's to me are $1.99/t-shirts, $3.99 polo/button front, Jackets are $5.99 and up. But they also mark some things up as premium, but typically it isn't that much and usually is it ralph lauren polo stuff, most of the time they just mark up popular brands that aren't even that great.

The other goodwills that are a little further away are exactly double the price. Their stores are much larger though and they are able to keep inventory longer. I have more success at smaller GW stores that must turn inventory faster.

Do you guys find that almost any name brand such as Polo, Hilfiger, Nautica, etc usually sell for good amounts or even do name brands depend on the shirt?

Honestly it's all about condition and rarity. None of those brands are going to sell that well, but it depends on what you buy it for.

If I can get Ralph Lauren shirts for $1, I'd buy them, but I usually pay $4 for them and they usually sell for $15-$17 shipped (button downs, polo's are less). So I typically pass on them.

I'll only buy Hilfiger if it is a really cool piece, vintage, or new with tags. Nautica I typically don't touch.

My greatest success is Tommy Bahama, Brooks Brothers, Vintage Hawaiian and higher end clothing lines. I know a lot of guys stick to sports, t-shirts and polos. I stick mostly to button front shirts, jackets and then look at the rest.

Condition is key in thrifting.

I do really well with all of those. Starting to look for more Nautica pieces. It has to so with the item. If it's a special series, if it has an interesting design, big scripts do well, flag series Nautica has done well for me. The one exception is anything 3XL or bigger Ralph Lauren will sell. A plain polo, nothing special will sell $20-25 no problem.

See, I haven't ventured too much into Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, ect. just because I don't have a very good eye for it, and well, Savers charges $12.99 for a long sleeve Hilfiger sweater. Only Hilfiger I have picked up have been two vintage jackets for $14.99 a piece and I sold them for a $30 and $50 profit respectively. I do have one sweater on my eBay right now that I don't think will ever move and I have another 2XL or 3XL big logo fleece hooded Hilfiger sweater that I have gained a lot of interest on (offers and such) but nothing close to what I expect on it. Otherwise Ive grabbed one Lacoste polo that took me forever to move and two Tommy Bahamas that I have only moved one of. I tend to stick on the sports side of things right now unless I find something really interesting looking in button ups (such as the few Western Wrangler Pearl Snaps I have grabbed)

How do they know your Ebay ID from using Instagram? Is there a link in your Instagram post? Not familiar at all.

I just linked my eBay in my bio and put at the end of the description of every item "Check out the link in my bio to purchase or DM/comment for more information"

I cannot sell Tommy bahamas no matter what it looks like or what I price it for. 90% of Ralph Lauren I buy when I can get it for the right price I sell quickly.

The local thrifts were running a little dry around the holidays so I'm just starting to get back in to it. I've decided to try and up my game in the new years so I'll be keeping closer track of my spending and profits. Anyways, picked this up for $2 on tuesday and sold it within hours for $100! First sale of 2016 was a good one!

Got to say Ive learned alot from this thread. Has helped quite a bit with sales and what to look for. Just recently got an instagram and slowly getting stuff uploaded. Is there not a way to make a sticky post on the first page with everyones instagram name so they are easier to find. Would like to start following more people that thrift. If not shoot me a pm so I can follow.
