I don't think anyone is specifically pointing out skepticism on Star 101 Jordans. The drama starts when you see this quick pop up posts trying to pimp a card selling for record prices then suddenly get a bunch of attention from guys looking to buy and sell. Seriously? How else would you treat a topic like this beside a hype and sell? YOu seriously think as a smart buyer you wouldn't want such type of attention that would warrant any extra activity for the card you are looking to buy at what you consider decent prices. Yet its the opposite. Here we are in a thread talking about insane record breaking prices and the same few guys asking to put in buys. Does that seem logical to you? put in request to buy after record breaking prices and claim the card is not done moving yet? Who in their right mind goes out pimping a card to pay more by hyping it even more? Unless of course there is another agenda behind it. If youre in the market to sell one, kudos to you. If youre in the market to buy one, good luck to you. But if youre in the market to buy them at steal prices, I question why any of you are here trying to hype crazy sale prices? Doesn't that work against your logic to pick them up quietly and low prices? |

I think you are reaching on all these. Two collectors can have a conversation and one can offer his opinion on where prices are headed without it being some plot to manipulate the market.

To each their own. If you are naive to think there is no agenda to hyping cards, that is your call!. When was the last time 2 sales cemented the market value of anything?

Yeah fair enough on JPayne saying he wanted one "someday" and the same Jpayne offering to trade for one now. But me telling a guy who already bought one he made a wise choice is a far reach on me pumping the market. What I'm basing that on is the steady increase of prices over the past few years and the fact that it's just the most popular athlete ever's most rare and valuable rookie card. Hardly a giant leap.

I do agree that is happening and there are shady people in the hobby. I'm just telling you that's not the case here. I'm not naive at all. 2 sales don't cement the market of anything but a few months ago this same conversation and argument was taking place when a few sales in the 7500-9000 price range took place, everyone freaked out and accused others of pumping the market and yet here we are, new high prices. You'd think eventually everyone would wise up and only pay what blowout thinks the cards are worth which apparently is what $4,000 for an 8.5? Because that was the 2011 price?
It's sick to me that most every single card we collect, rip from wax, keep from our childhood, etc has lost value and everyone laughs and talks and jokes about that. Hey remember when the beckett said my donruss canseco rookie was $100? Those were good times. But then something actually increases for once and it's like the world is ending. What are we doing in this hobby? |

This site needs more Star threads, good job Starman101. I'll take discussions over 80's era basketball cards/ or style of game for that matter over anything produced today.
JasonM32, so I guess it is safe to assume all of the threads about Panini products are phony boom markets pumped up for the wax gamblers to try to make something for their own gain-----that is until the next 10k pack comes out. Then the process starts all over again. A product that is over 30 years old doesn't need a "phony market boom" to help people "gain" something from these cards. I don't remember the price of Star team sets/packs from the 80's but I know they were less than a buck a pack....and the people you are accusing of doing the pumping have owned unopened packs for years. To go inside the mind of a millennial would make for an interesting trippy day. |

No comment on Wilt.... I've exhausted myself on that one But I did draft Shawn Kemp in our all time draft so you should probably vote for me when the time comes. My team is monstrous. |

There was an article written on that person who bough the BGS 9.5 Lebron exquisite for just under $100k. He literally stated that overpaying the valuation on an investment does 2 things. It creates the attention needed to protect an investment and secondly it leaves a mark for people to talk about. Both of which contribute to notoriety of the investment. He then goes on to state that he will continue to do the same for other pieces that he adds to his collection. This same process is used when art goes up for auction. It literally needs to make new record breaking prices each time a piece is sold to garner enough attention and leave a mark so that the next time it comes up on the market, it has legs to surpass last selling price. Im not question to the legitimacy of the sale. Im aruging the ambiguity of the sales anomaly. |

Two sales don't cement the market value for anything. No one is saying they do. There is an agenda on 99% of the posts about cards here. Big value cards tend to have some people looking to protect their investment but that does not mean there are nefarious plots and groups of people moving the same cards around to pump prices.

The baseball side of things has been booming. All HOF rookies are selling for record prices. As an avid Mantle collector, I can't find a nicely centered card without paying a record high these days. It's possible vintage may just be catching the eye of a lot of basketball fans that aren't into the new stuff or players. Basketball has a much smaller selection to choose from that say baseball in the vintage market. |

Does that mean all 8.5's are worth 15k? Absolutely not. It means this particular card that represents the absolute pinnacle of the grade commanded a handsome and well deserved premium. |

Exactly.... the way a 9.5 that is .5 from pristine will sell for more than one with 9 9.5 9.5 9.5 subs.
I only pull for.... lol, probably not, they'll probably tell me they'd rather have a new panini crown royale ticket gold jersey patch 4 color prizm diamond anniversary ruby red koolaid card of Porzingis. |
