I'm the first to get in line saying all grading companies need to create (and adhere to) more standardized criteria. Don't get me wrong, stories like this are upsetting. I 100% agree it looks shady. I just bought a huge PC item, PSA 10, and was beyond excited. Card came and has a huge surface blemish. Huge. No way it should be a 10. All grading is subjective yet we still chase the 9.5's and 10's. We're the suckers. |

Amen. AT MINIMUM all grading companies should use technology to determine centering. If the other three aspects are subjective to graders eye sight, ok, fine. Not centering.

In 2017 I agree with this 100%. Why is centering subjective in major sets like this? It should be standardized at this point and done by computer.

I had a 20 card submission in December come back 4/20 with Gems. I had a 22 card submission hit yesterday with 17 gems/pristine. Did I get that much better or did I just get a over zealous grader in December? Or did the current backlog mean they rush and over-grade in hopes people won't be mad at the delays??? More than likely a combination of all. Back to the OP's card in question, it could have been graded on Monday by one grader and Tuesday by another grader and been 9 on Monday and 9.5 on Tuesday. This is a bad thing. All I want as a buyer (customer) is consistency. Get it right. If "right" is a 9, so be it. If 9.5 is "right", then get it right the first time. Not the second time. |

I don't know, you only bumped half a point on two subs and the full bump on a auto which I think we all can agree that we have had plenty of Autos that get 9's where he exact someone got a 10.
I don't know, I don't think it is that crazy.

I think it is crazy that a card comes back 9/9, and I bust it and send it right back and it bumps up to a 9.5/10. I'm happy obvi, but damn man... you gotta think it's just a bit strange no? Thats a huge difference on the bottom line.

Grading is subjective, no matter who you choose to grade your cards.
If there was a company out there who used scientific technology to grade cards (think one "reference" card that could be overlaid on a grid and shined down on the card being graded) and was 100% consistent, people wouldn't support them or pay for the objective grading standard. BGS/PSA are firmly embedded in the brains of collectors, and the gold label or the PSA 10 means something to them (usually $). Furthermore if an objective grader actually existed, there would only be one grade ever done per card, no need to crack and resub, no need to crossover to another grader, etc. The current system is a nice little revenue stream for PSA and BGS, and collectors should just admit that grading is subjective. If you send a card in enough times and pay enough money, you'll get the highest grade possible for a given card. Your dog-eared Willie Mays might be capped condition-wise at a PSA 4 or BVG 4, but if it's a PSA 3 you can bet that if you submit it enough you will eventually get that PSA 4. |

If a card not getting the same grade every time it's submitted bothers you then you shouldn't grade cards with any company on the planet. This happens with every single company. I can't tell you how many PSA 9's I've resubbed and gotten 10's on.

No doubt you should. If you don't do it once then you aren't even trying.

This right here. There isn't any incentive for BGS or PSA to get more consistent. You don't like the grade, send us $10 more and try again. I think most people would be surprised how little time a grader spends on a card. I can't imaging it being much, they are looking for throughput more than accuracy. The big boy cards will get the extra look and second grader, but everyday cards??

This is exactly why someone's magical 1-10 scale "opinion" on a card means absolutely nothing to me.

I sound like someone from the 80's but when are computers going to start doing this? I would take the subjectivity out of the grading process completely. Edges, corners, centering would all be easily obtained with a scanner of some sort, I'm not a computer guy but you would think that someone would come up with a program that could do it.
