Default Thinking of "cutting" cable

I'm thinking of axing cable because it's just too damn expensive for a bunch of crap. Can you guys tell me what my other low cost options are?

Thanks,

Rob

If it's a "bunch of crap" why not just cut watching TV altogether?

I got one of these about a year ago and it works ok if you have a good wifi connection. I stopped using it because there was so much stuff on it and my connection wasn't the greatest. If you have the patience to search for what you want and actually write down or remember where it's located it may work for you.

What are you looking for? If you just want something to watch, pick one or two of the following- Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu. Some of the big dogs (HBO, etc) are also selling their packages as a single service for around $15/mo.

For sports, most of the majors have a full season access pass. They're a bit pricey, but give full access and are usually cheaper than a season's worth of cable would cost.

If you just don't want to pay for cable but feel you're entitled to all of the programming for free, go ahead and buy a jailbroken Firestick.

Netflix and Amazon Prime is all I need for my viewing pleasure.

If I want to be extra kinky I go back to my old ways of downloading films online. But I stop when comcast sent me an email saying I was downloading Guardian of the Galaxy from some torrent.

**** THAT SPYING ****.

Hulu is 8 bucks a month
Netflix starts at 9 bucks a month
Amazon Prime is 100.00 per year and on top of all the movies and TV shows you get you get free 2 day shipping on all Prime items.

Most major networks are now posting recently aired episodes to their websites for a limited amount of time. CBS even offers online viewers an additional paid subscription option ($6 per month) to unlock more than 8,500 episodes TV

I've been giving this exact path serious consideration. We've missed a few shows over the past couple of months due to a malfunctioning DVR, and each time I was able to access them with our Fire stick and by downloading the network's app.

I initially thought this thread was about contemplating getting a vasectomy...

But I agree with Netflix and Amazon Prime.

I believe so, if you want streaming video. Has anyone ever tried Sling TV?

Sports is the only reason I haven't done it already. Hell, I even still watch the Royals...

Sling has something for $20 a month, but if you keep tacking on $10 here and $20 there, it pretty much becomes not worth it.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm not millennial enough to just watch movies.

Not a troll response at all, it's a perfectly acceptable question. OP is saying that cable is too expensive and not much on that he likes, just asking why not just not spend no funds on it and go without.

At least it was a legitimate response while you gave them absolutely nothing as far as advice or insight

Make sure your internet can handle the level of streaming that you plan to do. I cut out cable a few years back, but when I moved, I wasn't able to get the internet speed that I had before. Where I live now I can really on stream things if no one else is using the internet.

If you live close to a metro area you can buy a HD antennae and get all the networks and local stations for free. I have one for back up to my dish and get 30+ stations. I am 50 miles out. You can add a streaming service if you like movies. I get plenty of college football on the networks and local stations.

I haven't had cable in a little over three years. It takes a while to get used to but I'm glad I cut the cord. We watch a lot less TV now and when we do, it's something we want to watch. No channel surfing and settling on the least crappy thing on.

As others have mentioned Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime are great. I'd say you can easily get by with two of the three. If we didn't have Amazon Prime already, I'm not sure I'd sign up for it. Each have 30-day free trials so take advantage of those to compare.

Odds are you won't get everything you want even with all three. I also have VUDU where I just by seasons of TV shows and movies I want. You could do that through Amazon as well.

I'm trying Sling through their 7-day trial as I wanted to watch bits of the draft. Personally, I have gotten accustomed to watching what I want, when I want so I don't really care for it. I think it would be great for someone who is trying to transition away from cable but as someone else noted, with all the add-ons you could quickly be back into cable bill territory.

Yep. Make sure your internet provider doesn't have data caps either.

Yeah, I think we're talking about two different things. I'm talking about watching games from noon through the prime time game, with many games on multiple channels. That's a lot of time at a friend's house.

And not judging anyone, just trying to find out if there's a realistic way to cut the cord and still watch a lot of sports. I don't think that's possible at this time.
