Default Rookie Cards or Memorabilia Cards?

Hello.

I recently shifted my collecting focus and have decided to collect star baseball players. One problem: what should I collect?

I figured rookie cards because, well they are rookie cards. However I realize after I pass the $1 junk wax rookies (Alomar, Larkin, Maddux, Smoltz), the older player's RC becomes more expensive.

However I also thought Game Used Jersey Cards would work as well. However they do cost more. But I realize that instead of buying a $40 Don Sutton RC, I could just spend that on a Sutton GU, along with other player's GUs.

What do you think?

GU as far as full GU? Absolutely.

Not GU cards though. No telling where the "GU" came from. easy pass

I really like RC's. Too many relic cards are just manufactured patches, "event worn" patches, and overall cheap junk.

For Relic Cards I was implying the earlier ones, more likely to be actually worn

I'd say more earlier jersey cards are more apt to be fake. At least today's jerseys can be MLB authenticated.

Yeah, I don't think older jersey cards (in general) are necessarily more authentic. Sure, the wording on the back of the cards used to be different but maybe the manufacturers were simply more 'naive' at the time and legal later intervened to change the message.

RC > Relics. Whether the relics are real or not doesn't matter either, just not a fan.

I like relics (albeit not high end) but totally understand why people simply pass on them. Remove the material from the card and there is simply no way to authenticate the swatch. Apart from the card it's worthless so when I buy GU cards I pay for the card and don't get carried away paying premiums for SICK LOGO MOJO patches.
