At the Home Run Derby batting practice session, all of the players in the outfield were having fun with the fans. Almost every shagged ball was tossed into the crowd. Greinke walked over to pick up a couple of balls that rolled foul. He was literally three feet from kids standing along the wall. Wouldn't even look at them, much less place a ball in a kid's glove. Anxiety, social awkwardness, whatever. Part of it is just being a dick.

I figured this thread would set your alarm off and you'd show up. Right on cue

One would think that players would be courteous and sign for each other at an event like the All Star Game; bush league move imo.

Sets up some drama for the potential Dbacks-Rockies wild card game. If Greinke come up to bat with Neshek pitching and gets plunked, it could setup an interesting scene.

As someone who has attempted to complete a few signed sets in the past (none successfully completed yet), I can attest that it is, from a collecting standpoint, disappointing when a player is tough, charges too much at shows, or unfortunately dies (the nerve, right?). But it happens. My personal feeling is that if Neil Peart, the legendary RUSH drummer, who's pretty much the most anti-fan-interaction guy in the history of entertainment, was able to consistently sign stuff for fans who sent items to concert venues back when RUSH still toured, then Zacky G can, from the comfort of the team clubhouse, knock out a few set cards for a fellow MLBer. Pat Neshek is pretty much the coolest dude you could hope to meet, and it takes a lot for HIM to call someone out.

So Neshek doesn't get something, and hounds a player until the player runs off, then posts about it on a card forum.

I thought adults played MLB? Poor entitled millionaire he is.

It wasn't the fact that he said no. It was the way he did it. Denied telling Pat he would sign for him, bringing his son into it, etc.

I would probably get mean too if someone was bothering me non stop for my autograph.

So we are just supposed to believe Neshek is telling the truth?

To me, he sounds like any other autograph hound. Whines when he doesn't get what he wants. He even said in his post he approached him 4 times! Why continue after you get told no?

I would believe Neshek before Greinke, yes.

Not sure how I feel about this.

On the one hand Grienke has the choice of who he wants to give an autograph to, whether its a player or fan or whatever as does every other famous person

But heres the thing. Neshek is a collector, its not like hes going to sell it or anything. I think he went a bit too far by complaining maybe even made it worse for himself. Just move on.

I understand being persistent but I think after a few attempts you have to realize you wont get the autograph

Just watched a bunch of interviews with Greinke, and he clearly has some developmental disabilities/ emotional problems, or sadly seems abused as a child or somewhere on the autism spectrum. I wouldn't classify him a socially awkward, he seems like he is living in another world. It's somewhat surprising that someone, especially a peer, would call him out publicly like that.

Who cares what his reasoning is. It's whatever, should have been kept between the two of them.

I just watched an interview with Greinke for the first time. I can't believe I'm going to say this. I feel extremely sympathetic towards him.

This really does paint Neshek in a very poor light. Now I feel even more like he is simply trying to screw with Greinke.

Seriously, I think Greinke is like some kind of an idiot genius. He's basically a robot.

Not sure how you'd reach that conclusion. This whole episode may make Greinke look bad, and he may indeed be a 'turd', but if I were to compile a list of MLB players likely to give an honest answer, Greinke would be on top. He seems incapable of lying, to the point of being utterly tactless.

Unfortunately Neshek doesn't look too good here either, and I always liked him too.

My favourite example of Greinke's tactlessness. From the pen of Joe Posnanski...

A Zack Greinke story: So, there was this game when Royals relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt gave up a home run. He was upset in the dugout, of course, and he stormed around, muttering at himself, “Man, that wasn’t even that bad of a pitch.” Of course, all his teammates kept their distance.

All except Zack Greinke.

“That wasn’t even that bad of a pitch,” Affeldt barked at himself again.

“Actually,” Zack said, “it was a pretty bad pitch.”

Affeldt looked up at Greinke. “Thanks, Zack,” Affeldt said, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

“No,” Zack said, “really, I went back to the clubhouse and looked at the pitch on video. It was a really bad pitch. Right over the middle of the plate, and you got it up. I mean it was a bad pitch.”

“Thanks, Zack,” Affeldt said again.

“Right down the middle. I could have hit it out,” Greinke said.

Affeldt looked into Greinke’s eager face and just shook his head.

“Thanks, Zack,” he said.

“Yeah,” Greinke said, and he walked back to his seat in the dugout.

I don't know where he falls, but Greinke is clearly on the autism spectrum.

LOL!!!

How about this:

Quote:
Don Mattingly called the meeting and told his charges to loosen up. Then, in an unprecedented move, because he never speaks out like this, Zack Greinke stood up. “I’ve got something to say,” he said. The room was quiet.

“Some of you guys have been doing the number two and not washing your hands. It’s not good. I noticed it even happening earlier today. So if you guys could just be better about it, that would be great.”

Greinke sat down. The team wasn’t sure if he was serious. When they realized he was, they laughed. Then they took the field, far looser than they had been, and went out and beat the Dbacks. Two days later they clinched the division and jumped in the Dbacks pool.

I'm actually reading Chipper Jones' autobiography and he touches on this very subject.. He pretty much said that it's common courtesy to sign stuff for another ball player and he always thought it was cool that other guys wanted his autograph.. He said the only person who wouldn't sign anything for him was Barry Bonds..
