Default Ready Player One

I just got out of a screening of this movie and it was really good....most fun I've had at the movies in a while. So many pop culture references. There was obviously some story issues, but still a great time. I may even go check it out again this weekend in IMAX.

I will avoid spoiling you guys but there are two fights between some very well know robots in the movie that you really can't get anywhere else.

I've read that it's NOTHING like the book. I didn't particularly love the book, but I really hate this trend where Hollywood takes a beloved or critically acclaimed book and then dumbs down the material to the lowest common denominator in order to make the movie appealing to the masses. And no, the fact that Spielberg directed it doesn't mean much to me.

A Wrinkle in Time, The Dark Tower, The Circle, The Snowman are recent examples of this.

I'll be seeing it Friday, but my expectations are firmly in check for it.

I know nothing of this movie but the preview I saw looked identical to rampage so I laughed at the timing.

Isn't that the case with all movies? It makes sense they "dumb it down" based on how society is. Look at all the comic book movies that are #1 each week.

They need to make one on NETFLIX, this way they can branch out the stories better.

2+ hours was NOT enough for the film.

I went to a screening too. Never heard of the movie, as honestly it's not the kind of movie I watch. My buddy had free passes though.

Was 3D. Not sure if they are all that way, but they should be. This movie was amazing.

My girlfriend and I both read the book last year and are excited to check out the movie this weekend. We have full expectations to be disappointed, but it's going to be rainy and cold in St. Louis this weekend, so we're not missing out on anything else

I have not read the book, but I will be reading it over the next couple of days. Based on the plot summary on wiki though I think the movie may be better than the book.

I'm going to see it Friday. Not my kind of movie, but a friend bought way too many tickets so we are going so he doesn't have to eat the cost of the tickets.

Worst case scenario, we leave half way through and go to the bar lol.

It's a good read... not my favorite book in the world, but its a fun adventure that can be knocked out easily in weekend.

It's definitely a different audience these days. My problem with it, is that I am a kid of the 80's and they are targeting it to the Stranger Things crowd. Enough already with the 80's nostalgia. But hey if it makes boatloads of cash, the studios will not bat an eye.

As for comic book movies, I'm already fatigued by comic book movies. Just like I'm fatigued by the endless incarnations of Star Wars films.

But hey, it is what it is. As I get older, my demographic will just stop going to the movies altogether. Besides it's all for the kids these days. Dang kids, get off my lawn.

That's surprising to hear. It's not like Ready Player One is a sprawling epic story like The Dark Tower.

I'm excited. My oldest son and I are going Friday night after work. I liked the book. I am curious to see how they bring it to life on the big screen. I don't normally watch many movies. I'm excited!

Saw it, didn't like it. Haven't seen Shining and missed a lot of the other references

yeah...that could be the downfall of this movie....you have to really know the references to truly enjoy it. i think you can still enjoy it without understanding some of the references, but not as much.

The book was centered entirely around 80's nostalgia. 80's pop culture knowledge was the point of the story.

I understand that. I also read the book, so I know it is all about 80's nostalgia/pop culture references. Mostly I'm talking about not really understanding why or how this movie even exists in the first place. When I read the book, I never once thought it would actually become an actual movie. But now that 80's nostalgia-driven shows like Stranger Things and other 80's nostalgia items (NES Classic, for example) are grabbing people's attention and dollars, it was a foregone conclusion that a screen adaptation would actually make it into theaters.

This is a well written article that goes on to explain people's obsession with the era and why it is now in vogue. (article is from 2016, but it makes some still relevant points).

Didn't read the book (honestly didn't even know it was a book until a few weeks ago) but I loved the movie. Freakin Nerd Nirvana and while I won't spoil it but this movie probably has the best use of the F word in a PG-13 movie ever

Just got back from seeing it in IMAX.

Mind Blowing. I'm surprised how much I enjoyed it.

i agree, but you can say the same thing about a lot of book-to-movie adaptations. A lot of them would benefit from a Netflix or HBO Band of Brothers-like series. I felt like (and still do) that World War Z would have been a better mini series than a movie.

I loved the book, but that's because I grew up in the era that most of the references are centered around.

so having seen the movie- i have a major bone to pick with the way some of the other characters were converted. The "high 5" were supposed to be "experts", so to have some of them not know something mainstream is bunk (i.e. one of them not seeing the Shining).

I was also kind of bummed how they jumped right into things (i know, i know, it's a movie with short time), and while the race was very cool, i was bummed that they didn't start off the whole thing the way it started in the book. Would have been nice to see the guy start from the school world.

that being said, they did very well in my opinion with the main bad guy and his faction until the end.

I was also disappointed that they cut more of the Ogden Morrow storyline, and the final battle, while cool, could have been much cooler if they followed the books. still, seeing all the Master Chiefs, Ninja Turtles, Chuckie's, and other pop culture characters duking it out was pretty solid. i think there was also a glaive from Krull in there somewhere. too bad they didn't do any of the Flicksynch stuff. very cool idea in the book.

He spent the whole movie pointing out how the oasis was his escape and one for many others but once he became filthy rich and got a girl he decided to shut it 2 days a week? Wonder how he'd feel about those days if he didn't win.

Thought it was alright.

Yes it screwed around with the continuity of the book too much for my liking, and they truncated a lot of the Ogden Morrow stuff, presumably for time.

I know lots of people have never seen the Shining. My wife has never seen it, but during that whole sequence, I was grinning ear to ear. (The Shining is one of my absolute favorite movies, and I had just watched it again last week).

As for the racing scene, I LOVED it. Right up there with Speed Racer's finale. In fact, seeing the Mach 5 in starting grid reminded me how much I loved the Speed Racer movie.

Yes that was the Krull glaive. I personally loved the nod to Terminator 2 towards the end of the movie. I was like, wow they really put everything in there.

I liked BMD's review and how they handled that topic.

"...it’s a movie steeped in and sold off intellectual property imagery – which has been remixed and regurgitated in order to create this whole new attraction to get paying butts in seats. At the same time, it spins a narrative of the underclass rising up to reclaim these images as their own, before a massive corporate conglomerate can obtain, pirate, and bastardize it. In essence, we’ve bought a ticket to a rather spiffy laser light show that asks us to consider revolting against those who just sold us this seat."
