I watched ESPN Around the Horn last night and one of the writers said Harper didn’t want anything to do with the HR Derby and he was pushed into it because it’s at DC and he is the face/ambassador of the Nats. HR Derby means nothing. Ask Todd Frazier, Yoenis Cespedes and about 30 other guys who have faded into oblivion.

how exactly would a HR Derby be staged?? i am curious how this is even a thought? its not like Lebron doing a dunk contest and the Judges just giving him 50 every dunk...that could be "fixed"...how do you fix/rig/stage something where you have to hit the ball 400ft more times than the other guy?? i dont get the thought

If you are wondering why Bryce is hitting .214 here's his philosophy of hitting:

How can a batter beat the shift?
"You can't," Harper said. "If you hit a ball in the hole, then you're out. If you hit a ball up the middle, you're out."
"If I have a kid, I'm not going to tell him to stay through the middle anymore because if you hit a ball up the middle, you're out," he said. "I guess guys could bunt down the first base line or third base line if they shift you the other way. But you don't get paid to bunt. If you hit it over all of them, that's how you beat it."

Seriously? First I’m not saying it was, just makes you wonder. Second you can cork a bat. You can also use altered balls. It’s possible but not probable. Just interesting that that he didn’t want to do it but he was urged to by Nats and MLB.

So in the alternate reality you speak of, Bryce, his dad, and Boras, and Nats execs and MLB baseball executives all decided, hey let's make sure the hometown hero wins the HR Derby.

They (1) tell Freeman to lose, and then (2) tell Muncy to lose.

(7) They say to Bryce, "hit 9 home runs in 47 seconds
to catch up, BUT (8) make sure to only TIE it in regulation, so that you can (9) win it in overtime, to make it as dramatic as possible.

Perfectly scripted.
