Would be interesting to see if this might not be the week with the widest disparity in print runs among the individual cards. Fewer set buyers?

Gattis is the shortest printed card since week 3 Russ Martin and JBJ were each in the 3,900 range.

I figured the PR was just released as I sold 10 of them on Ebay within the last 10 minutes. My last 3 were just listed at a higher price

I've asked to Ms. Seto before, if the original artwork gets sent back to her.
She and her husband (card shop owner) replied that the artwork does not get sent back, and while they do not know what Topps does with them, they doubt it will be re-sold in any way. They are assuming it is just kept safe somewhere within Topps.

On a side note, I saw Topps posting stories on Instagram for this year's Topps Gallery.
If same like last year, there will be chance for buyers to get the original artwork of artists involved in the set.
Last year, I believe Dan Bergren and Ms. Seto were the two artists making the sketches.

I see that Gregg / editorgaw / lovetosellbaseballcards is still selling Topps Living cards and has adjusted his prices accordingly, lol. Fire up the presses!

Something else that's interesting:

This is the 2nd lowest print run set, (13,678 total cards), this far, I believe.

Only week two printed less cards over the 3-card set.

I wonder how long this stays at number 2?

Low PRs are great for the collectors and the 2nd market!

Gregg is obviously watching this thread on BO now he took down his individual Gattis listing and put them all here on his lovetosellbaseballcards account for a steal at $99.95 plus shipping, lmao.

This week's set should draw more interest thanks to player selection and should bring the numbers up some, especially if Yelich comes through for the Brewers after all in the NLCS.

The physical object (painting, drawing, etc.) still belongs to the artist. Owning the work of art and the rights to do something - anything - commercial with that work are two separate things.

If Seto made a deal in which Topps owns the originals and the rights to publish them however they see fit, I do hope she was compensated accordingly. If Topps approached somebody like Neal Adams (he was mentioned before, though I know he doesn’t do this kind of work), and asked him for that kind of all-encompassing deal, you can be sure that he’s gonna charge accordingly.

Graig
Unrelated to your work or Ms. Seto's, or any of your own past commissions, what do think a company of standing similar to Topps might pay the artist in addition to publication rights to also acquire a piece of artwork of similar size and quality?

I'm only lightly versed in the sale of original art, but I think many of these Seto pieces could already sell for several thousand dollars each, with room for that value to grow.

It's just the natural progression of a product like this...

Slow start, then hot damn I like this new thing, hella crazy run up, then a cool down... then mostly status quo. We're closer than not to sub 3000 weeks. The SPs from the beginning will soon enough no longer be SPs, the market will shake up again for a bit... then we'll settle on being left with set collectors, RC collectors & flippers, and people prospecting for the next SP!

Has there ever been a product like this?

By product like this, I mean, something "new" that's online exclusive with limited one-time only offerings.

Same concept, different (and I think better) package

I really like Living, and of the 4 mentioned here it is by far my favorite... just being a realist!

I'm not saying I disagree with your previous statement. I'm just not sure there's been a product like this before to compare to.

All along I've been hoping to see some sub-3,000 PRs. Nothing wrong with that. If they drop below 500, that will be a big problem.

The uncharted territory, just because we've never been there, is with the weekly sets available during the off-season, particularly right in the middle, when baseball is furthest from people's minds.

Player selection will be important to sell even 4k of each, I think. I'm hoping for a lot of retired names, but they could also fill out the active rosters. As a Dodger fan, I love already having 6 players from this year's 25 man roster, with the Robinson a great bonus. I'm hoping for at least a couple more additions to my team set this off-season, and a lot of the rest next season, before the players from the current team start departing by trade and free agency.

Jdandns, it all depends on the artist and his or her track record. If it’s somebody who’s new to the field, he/she may be willing to let their originals go for much less than what somebody who’s been doing it for a decade would. I’m not sure what Seto’s work sells for in the open market, so it would be hard to tell, but certainly the quality is high enough to warrant four figures (at least).

Regardless, every artist prices their stuff differently. With me, if I was paid a few thousand dollars to do a painting for a book cover, and to fulfill the assignment, did something that was 40” x 50”, I wouldn’t feel comfortable unless I sold the original for much more than what I did the painting for in the first place. So, with me, size is the deciding factor. With others, it might be more about the player being depicted - a painting of Mickey Mantle would cost more than a painting of Gil McDougald. Everyone’s different and everyone has their reasons.

Though if you like Seto’s work, I think it’s totally worth it to get in touch with her and commission something. That is, unless Topps has an exclusive with her and she can’t create work for anyone else. Which wouldn’t surprise me terribly.

Thank you, Graig. I took a moment to look at some of your artwork, which, as an obvious philistine, I was heretofore unfamiliar with.

Spectacular, sir. Bravo.

Not exactly suited for trading cards, the larger work, but too bad there's not a set like the old 80's and early 90's Donruss with a perforated card with 3 pieces of a puzzle in each pack. Those would be a lot of fun to piece together, and when finished, large enough to be able to enjoy the stunning detail.

Just ordered my first Living card. I knew that I would want the Kershaw whenever it was released. Perfect timing I think and I love the entire look of the card!

#LivingSetBounce for Devers and Martinez of the BoSox tonight. Both previous subjects (J.D. just last week) homered to account for all four Boston runs that has them on the verge of the World Series.

Devers with 12 already needs just 2 more RBI the rest of the way to tie Andruw Jones for the most in a postseason by a player 21 or younger.

Reason why people won't drop out of the set after card #100. $5 card yesterday is now a $30 card. One week of lower print runs will drive a renewed interest, especially with the smaller flippers.

Thank you so much, Jdandns! And by no means are you a philistine - I'm glad you dig what I do.

Dick Perez was a big influence on me growing up for exactly those sets you mentioned. It's still a dream to have my work on a card too, but I guess it just has to be the right fit for both parties.

I just wonder how many of these are selling to actual *random* Gattis fans/card collectors, or how much of it is big time LS sellers controlling the market? Wouldn't most hardcore Gattis/Astros fans have picked it up when it was on sale?

Like who is paying $30 for a Gattis base card? I wouldn't pay $30 for a signed RC of him with inscriptions. LOL

A signed Gattis base Topps RC can be had on eBay right now for $4.50 shipped, a Finest rookie refractor auto is at $9.50 shipped. It’s all TLS guys gobbling these up.
