Default The one that got away

So yesterday I just missed a really nice Griffey and I fear I won’t see it again near that price. It went for more than I was willing to spend, but I think that near miss will sit with me for a while. What’s the near miss that’s burned into your memory?

If Jason Kipnis foul in the 9th inning of the 2016 WS was a HR...there is about $2,000 worth of Topps Now cards I would have bought.

When I alone at night, in the dark, contemplating how short life is and now I will probably never see the Indians win a World Series....I think about what those cards would have been like.

Go Browns, I guess.

I found the last card I needed to complete a set I had worked three years on. It was the Bronze Foil 2001 Leaf Certified Materials Fabric Of The Game Stan Musial SP card. I already had the other 116 (or 114...I can’t remember) in the set and that was the last one I needed.

I was the high bidder on eBay and paid. Seller emailed me and said he would mail on Monday which he did. Tracking updated by USPS twice and then went dark. Card was lost in the mail. Ended up getting my money back and the USPS refunded the seller as I had to sign a document for him stating I never received it.

But my story has a happy ending. I was finally able to locate the same card and complete my set...but it took me 6 years to find it. And then I had to WAY overpay for it.

I hope you are able to locate your card again! Hang in there, it will resurface again someday.

When I was 13 I pulled a 1999 Upper Deck Piece of History 500 Club Ted Williams out of a box of UD Retro I got for Christmas. To this day it is the nicest card I ever pulled. A few years after I pulled it when I started to drive and discovered girls I sold to my LCS owner for $350. Every once in a blue moon one pops up but it's always when I don't have the extra cash to spend. One day I'll get this card again!

A local dealer trying to sell me on buying out his Mike Trout Bowman Chrome autos (this thread will get a lot of these examples).

I remember 10 cards total, one was a blue refractor auto and a gold refractor auto, with the remaining 8 being a mix of base and refractor autos. He wanted $300 total and I went and bought some random boxes instead. Yup.

I was going to say the five PSA 10 Mega Box Shohei Ohtani's that I sold during last years craze.

Then, I just looked at those prices. They are half what I sold them for...

There was a recent BGS 9.5 Fleer Jordan RC that went for slightly more than my $8k budget.

Likely wont have another opportunity since I blew that money on Bellinger, Acuna, Soto etc...

I remember not pulling the trigger on $30 Mike Trout rookie autos...my rational being that I had got his auto TTM and...why would I want more than one autograph of some prospect on the Angels?

1999 Upper Deck Black Diamond Mystery Numbers Emerald Frank Thomas /27 and a 99 PMG Frank Thomas. I was the under bidder on both. I think think I know who won both and if they won them I'm sure they had me covered by way more than I was willing to spend. But it still sucks losing out on stuff you might never see again by a few dollars.

2011 Finest Chipper Jones Canary 1/1. Even had a horrible title for it so I had less competition. The one card I still need for the rainbow of that. I didnt start the rainbow until later. Otherwise I doubt I would of lost it. Thought I had a chance for it to be resold when he made HoF but guess not. Still search daily for it. Currently #1 on my want list.

The griffey I wanted (2016 dynasty with mariners logo patch) had a terrible title (didn’t mention it was a griffey) as well. I’m definitely kicking myself over it. Now I have to play the waiting game and inevitably spend even more money to land it.

Missed a B.J. Ryan 2009 Goodwin Champions plate, was on buy it now for super cheap was listed and bought within a 2 hour period. Never resurfaced, I told original seller that I would pay more and asked if he would pass that onto the buyer. Was told by the seller it was passed on but never heard anything more. Hopefully it pops up again one day, same with the 2006 Topps Chrome Superfractor of his, appeared on ebay in 2011 for the 2nd time, I didn't start supercollecting B.J. until 2012.

You weren't even the second highest bidder. I assume mine is locked in some crazy Braves Fan PC and I'll need them to go broke or worse.

It's not. Just pointing out I found it. If it gets resold, it probably won't go for less then 1500. Similar one sold recently for 2000.

Yup. I was really hoping this one would stay under the radar, but no luck. Very surprised that the seller did such a poor job on the listing, but people are dumb.

Several Grady Sizemore cards. I was outbid on a couple, which was pretty rare. But most recently my own stupid cheapness made me miss one one #/5 that I had never even seen before. It was a $23 BIN/BO but I put in an offer of $15 when I should have just bought the dang thing. Naturally, someone else did 15 minutes later. The thing that really galls me is if it had been listed for $100 I would have put in an offer of $75, so it wasn't really the amount of dollars, I just wanted an even bigger bargain.

Way too many to count. A lot of times when an auction ends at an odd time, like early afternoon stuff goes cheaper and I'll forget to check. The way I put it, if it's a card you have been trying to land for a long time and is rare, bid an amount with a little more than what you really want to pay and let it go. This way if you lose, you won't feel so bad.

Two things.

1.) Yes, that has won me a couple of rare 90s Vlad cards and I was more than happy to pay the premium when it's been there.

2.) Add those items to your Watch List so you get a reminder that they're ending?

Granted, if this was years ago, not much you could've done! It's a huge bummer when it happens though.

I do that for odd times too. I will be working when it ends and so I usually just put some crazy price in just to insure I win it. Doesn't always work. Sometimes people out crazy bid me. Probably the same person, since it's usually Braves stuff I'm buying for the PC.

I remember it well.

Senior year of college. Was wasting time in the computer lab (this was before everyone had laptops and phones with the intertrons) before class.

No idea how I stumbled upon it but a sports illustrated featuring George Foreman and Muhammad Ali signed by Ali with tristar authentication (Ali use to do a good number of shows with them).

It was at $99 with a few bids.

Seller had misspelled Muhammad.

I wanted to snipe it an not bid it up too much so I went to class with the plan to sit in the computer lab afterward and win it.... after class my crush decided to talk to me. She was smoking - she looked like a young Angie Harmon (I remember this because she was told this multiple times when we were hanging out). Harmon was a decently big celebrity in 2003 since she was dating Jason Sehorn.

Anyway I completely lost track of time.

By the time I wrapped up my conversation I had missed the auction by 10 mins... ended at $103

You have the 2011 Finest Chipper Jones Super refractor 1/1 and all (4) 1/1 printing plates for your Rainbow? Or your not counting those in your rainbow?
