What is the Rays take on this though? Basicially a straight up Yandy Diaz for Jake Bauers?

Adding an over the hill useless bat like Santana makes my team better said no team ever.

For the Indians, EE’s contributions weren’t enough to justify clogging up he DH spot. Now they have more flexibility moving forward with other moves or Kipnis might be better served as a DH at this point in his career if the Indians can’t dump him.
Roster is sort of weird right now but this trade is definitely setting up other moves.

I am with you. This seems like a deal with other deals in mind, but I could be very wrong.

I heard Edwin is going to Tampa as well.
Another little wrinkle that hasn't been mentioned: Seattle is sending $6 Million in cash considerations to the Tribe. Someone on local radio did the math and figured that this save the Tribe 9 million. Add the $7M they saved on the Gomes deal and they have some cash to work with. Maybe they can move Alonso for an outfielder or a relief pitcher. On another note, now that we moved Edwin, this helps when/if we move Kluber or Bauer. We can now get a max return for either because now we don't have to include a big contract with them. This makes me think that they're not moving Kipnis.

So Santana, who the Indians had an opportunity to sign as a free agent last year... goes back to the Indians who are now willing to pay him?

They are willing to pay him because they dumped a contract and got cash in the deal. They weren't willing to sign him to a $20 million dollar deal (which I didn't blame them for) with Edwin and being able to get Yonder. It's not a simple as you make it sound.

Yonder’s fault.

I actually don't agree with what appears to be the common opinion around here that Santana is worthless, but in a vacuum I'd definitely rather have Edwin

Oh yeah, no way the Indians would’ve paid both Santana and EE. Just saying if Yonder didn’t prove to be a role player than this deal probably wouldn’t have happened.

I think the Indians see this as Santana over Yonder and Bauers over Yandy with Edwin being the cost of upgrades. Still lots of work to be done.

That's fair. And my previous comment did ignore Bauers entirely who I think is a solid get

I don’t hate Yonder, he was always a platoon player but the Indians made him an everyday player for some stupid reason.

I just don’t understand the Rays love affair for Yandy? Seems like they gave up a lot for him, cash considered.
Is the turf really hard down there? Maybe they think his ground balls will translate into ground rule doubles off the infield.

Yeah I liked Yandy but cash and a prospect for him... Wow.

The cash came in the Santana part of the deal. The Tampa side was Yandy and the ever popular "player to be named later".

Good trade for the Rays. Diaz provides a needed a right handed backup first baseman for Choi and with Nathaniel Lowe at AAA Bauers had no place to go. I'm not sure how big league ready Bauers is.
