i would start out with buying a set from the year your son was born and then every year after. im not sure how old your son is but it should be relatively cheap and u can space it out and watch for deals, etc. blowout has topps sets relatively cheap if u buy them the following year. i also took a break for a few years and got back in to collecting after college and what got me hooked again was picking up vintage boxes. 86 fleer, 87 fleer, 84 topps, 82 topps, 89 upper deck are all pretty affordable and there is some great rookies to pull and possibly look into getting graded later. i also would put at least half of the money in singles and pick up trout, lebron, and a nice psa 10 griffey rc. just check ebay completed sales to get a feel for what the cards sell for and find ones you like and bid away. checking b/s/t board here is great for getting rookies also. if you leave yourself enough money left over grab a case of 2018 topps update baseball, as it is heavy in good rookies. maybe break a box or two at a time with your son and gauge his interest in the hobby. since condition is important make sure you teach your son how to use sleeves, top loaders etc. before busting wax with my son i had him practice putting commons in sleeves etc and after about 10 minutes he was a pro. whatever you choose good luck and hope your son enjoys it as well!
